These are not a practical choice for a planted aquarium. They are no where near as strong as what would be needed. I mention their ideal use in the video and also mention they would not be useful on a planted tank or reef tank.
Each LED is not even 1 watt. they are closer to 0.10 watts.
A planted tank needs around 30 watts per square foot of tank.
EXAMPLE: So for an 4 foot long 55 gallon planted aquarium (4 square feet) we need 120 watts of LED lighing power.
Even if we buy the 60 LED/meter light strip, that would only be around 8 watts of power.
MEANING you will need to buy 15 of these strips to MAYBE match what a good LED light fixture can do. (15 strips = $345)
You are better off buying a proper planted tank LED light or building the more powerful LED system i have shown in a previous video.

Thanks Joey I jumped straight on eBay and order some of these lights, at first had a problem with the control system. But I sent the seller a message about it and he personally made sure to test 1 before he sent me a new one, no questions asked! Look forward to more vids keep up the good work!!
Just ordered the book , and wanted to thank you again for the excellent job you are doing. Looking forward to more too!
Wow! That is amazingly simple! This is why I love your videos. You demystify everything so that the general hobbyist isn't overwhelmed by it all. You empower us and help us to realize, "Hey, I can do that!" Thank you sir! It seems to me that if you bought a long enough strip of lights you could weave it back and forth several times in the gutter/housing and get something bright enough to support a planted aquarium. At the very least you could build up enough illumination to take care of plants with low light requirements.

I think you would need an awful lot of them. I dont see the potential in them to grow plants, but it would be interesting to find out. Maybe i'll get another set and see what i can do. ;)

And suddenly a new project was born.
Love it! I just created this little project myself. I considered getting the reflective tape but didnt think it was worth it. I have 125 gallon tank and the led lights I purchased were more than enough to run down 70 inches twice so it is plenty bright!
Thank you for the great idea, i used a 5 meters multi colour led with remote control strip and attached it to my canopy. It gives a great lighting, you are a real inspiration. Best wishes from Syria.
This is amazing, I have just set up to new tanks and was going to spend £300 on a light for my African Cichlids. I'm not now. Just found the same product in the UK £12 for 5 meters. The King Of DIY has just saved me £288 (488 us dollars). Thank you so much.

Great stuff!! For small or micro tanks you can similarly use those plastic channels used to hide electrical cables, instead of a rain gutter.

Cichlidman09 | Forrest's Cichlids I would technically say yes. Cost is a bit more and i do not know for sure though. I was personally on a mission to chop down power consumption. This was one thing i did. I cut my lighting by 178 watts with just this project. (Saving about $5-7 a month.) I did a few other things to further cut it down by 300 watts on this system, but that is for another video. ;) Here's my power calculator: diyfishkeepers.com/forum/index.php?pageid=energycalculator

Awesome idea went ahead and created one for my 100 gallon tank spent roughly $27 Bucks (in Los Angeles)... Very easy n takes minimal time to complete! I wrapped it back and forth hard to make the LEDs turn inside the gutter to come back so you will need more Double tape to keep it adhered to the top wall. ONCE AGAIN THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO
Thank you for this! I've been looking for a cheap and easy option. :)
Extremely informative on DIY projects. Will be making my own LED lights for all my tanks. i.e. Reef and fresh setups
Great build! Simple, cheap and effective. You could also put some reflective tape inside the sides of housing to increase intensity slightly.

This looks so simple and so easy to do ....... right I’m of to build a light for my new tank .... thanks Joey you are the best ♥️❤️
nice tips man, im looking foward to do this for my 55 gal tank. when i look at the led at ebay, i'm confused about the parts like "two outputs 24K IR" could you explain them?
Hey Joey, I've had these set up since march or April, they work and the ones I had actually were waterproof and smd 5050, these are the brightest ones however they had a metal strip and it was siliconed in so no water would pass through and I got these on eBay for about $12 a pair of 24" each ill post a vid this week when I clean it out thanks and keep it up....
Hey Joey this is a great DIY thanks. I have 15 tanks and most are fluorescent this will definitely help me with the light bill. I do have a question I just clicked on the link to ebay they no longer have 44IR + 2A power what would be the next best option.?
JOEY !!! I ordered the same from the same guy and when it came I tried it out and its AWESOME!!! thanks buddy...... u r the man!!!
Thks Joey for the video on LED lights . Simple and precise. Will be trying it out on my 230 gallon shortly. Appreciate . Cheers .
Nice. I wouldn't have thought of using vinyl gutters. Great idea.
I got something like that at costco a while back. Love them! I have always had such strong lights but I find these leds to be more soothing. Good move with the gutters.

Good one Jo 👍👍👍 Just like always keep Up the good work 👍 🍻 👍
This seems like a very quick and easy way to add more dynamic lighting to a tank. Even though I only have a tiny tank with a single comet goldfish, (Working on upgrading that soon) I think this has inspired me to buy or make some lighting so I can see him better. Thank you very much! Also: This has most likely already been answered, but what species are those adorable little skates you have on the lower tank? They're very interesting, but I can't really seem to find any mention of them on many aquarium websites. And is that a type of cichlid in the upper tank? I'm still very new to this hobby, so I apologize for my ignorance.
Joey what kind of light do you recommend for a planted tank? And do you have any videos about co2 tanks?
Another great vid, Joey! I'm a big fan of LED lighting, but never seen this strip stuff before, looks amazing! Has so many other potential applications...

I have the exact same LED strips thanks to you! :) what would you say is the best settings for plant growth- low light plants? As in what are the best colors and brightnesses?
Awesome! I actually just switched to LEDs like these, the only difference being that i went with a strip that was SUPERBRIGHT. Althought it doesnt have the Red greens and blue leds, they are all white, the light output is alot higher than on any of the color changing ones, and it actually has been supporting plant growth!
So if we add more of these LED strips we can then say it would be good for corals? As the brightness of the light get stronger? Thanks in advance
I am so excited to see this. I have an established 60 gallon with the old fluorescent hood lighting. I just started up a 20 gallon saltwater (thanks for that video :) for my daughters and really wanted to upgrade both tanks to led. I have been looking at the Current USA model, but just didn't want to pay that much. This will litteraly cut my cost to about an 1/8th of the cost and not to mention saving me on energy :)
Hey Joey, fan from the future here going back in time to retrieve some information. RIP Buddy thanks for many more years of awesome

Hi there, love your channel, would one 24 inch strip be adequate for live plants in a 20 gallon aquarium, or do I need to double up?
i cant fin the video agan where you ordered the lights from rapid led, but i have a question if you will or can answer, when you plug these lites in i seen you did sets of the 4 colors, thats nice but lets say.. just wanted a accent liting for the tank stand room, could you.. do in the 1 string mix these, per say cool white nueteral warm blue then repeat down the line of the string and be ok? im doing my fish room now but the stand is a double stack abut 12' long and 40" wide, was thinking maybe i could run 2 strip's of this combo maybe since this is a breading and yes i have live plants as well. what you think?
Is it waterproof lights mentioned are ok for my tank if I use 3.3ft on 36gallon aquarium tank hood? my existing lights get slightly wet all time. thats why I asking is it waterproof.
Hello, kIng of Diy (or anyone else watching these videos) i just wanna say i love your clips and tutorials, they are full of great ideas and they are never alienating for anyone who doesn't know much about the hobby. But anyway here's my question; Due to various circumstances i ended up mounting a small aquarium (around 20 liters or 5.3 gallos i think), and i already have an aquarium lamp, but since it was given to me it really doesn't fit well because it is bigger, now my question is, do you think that if i use lets say, regular led lighbulbs but with the right amount of lumens and the right temperature, i could just use a regular deks lamp to light it? I say this because i can see a lot of great designs and a lot of ways of utilize em´. Anyway thank you very much.
Nice Joey!Your tanks look sweet!
hey joey thanks for the video I'm really getting in to African cichlid and I have them in a 125 gal tank, but has the reh t8 bulbs and I priced some leds to fit it and wow.sure you know they were not cheap.anyway your way sounds much better. so thanks. will post some pics when I get it up. love the help you give all of us just getting in this hobby, and man I love it. thanks again.
Can you tell me where I can purchase the light kit with the remote please connectors and all

ebay water proof led strip
Hi Joey love your channel. I might point out the RGB leds have composite white, which are not the right spectrum. I ordered a strip that specifically are 6500 k. My strip was 5m, which would allow for 4 strips across the top. I also got a strip of RGB to use for moon lighting. Now to come up with idea/build something that can house 6 -8 strips (each set can make 4 strips). I like the gutter idea but it won't work for that many on my 75gal. I guess 2 gutters would do the white only. Maybe I'll do that for now.
HI great video. I have a 55g african cichlid tank with some clown loaches. at the moment I'm using a very low powered led loght which lights up half the tank at an okay brightness but I want a brighter solution so I can see my fish colour better. I have a 2 light bulb aquarium light which is super bright and it's the old fashion bulb light not led. so do you think that's too bright for my fish or is that OK to use or should I invest in a big led loght?
K.I.S.S. is the key! Thanks for your advice!
Great informational video. Do you think this strip could be put on a lid that has no lighting? Or would it get too hot? I appreciate your feedback.
Would this be a good fixture for a planted aquarium?
Hi.. thank u for the tutorial.. can we have plants in our aquarium with this lightning? We have 50 gallon tank three feet long.

I did something like this about four months ago. I have a Marineland LED light fixture that has a switch that changes it from to the white light to blue for night time. There was no way to have it switch automatically. So I hooked the Marineland fixture onto a digital timer so that during the day it turns on the white light. Then I attached the LED strip lights to the Maineland fixure (set to blue light)and connected the strip ligts to a second digital timer and set the lights to come on as the Marineland fixture turns off at night. So now I have a fully automated day and night light systems. Thanks for all the tips and videos you put out.
Perfect timing man!! I just scored a new 55 gallon tank and first thing I wanted to do was get rid of the cheap stock lid/lighting unit. I'll use the LEDs in a canopy instead.

Thank you so much, this video is so useful! Currently in our saltwater tank we have a ceiling light fixture because it's so old that we couldn't find any other type of light to attach to it. Additionally, I'm too young to have a job and have to focus on school work so I can never quite save up enough money for a $200 light fixture.
Very nice Joey. This won't quite work on my project as anything more than an accent light because I want to have the option of planting but this is definitely a cheap and easy option. Well done.

Genius. I got a hand-me-down nano aquarium, but wanted to use your simple sponge filter build (to maybe later modify the setup for an small scale aquaponics). I tried to make it work with the existing lid, which needless to say doesn't work. I've been wanting to buy strip LEDs but didn't know what project to use them on. Now I do! Thanks for the vid!
what the best color to use and how long do you keep them on I have seen red green blue and white
Can we have a discussion over this aquarium top lightning......
Can this setup be used for low tech aquatic plants? Or is it just for the purpose lighting? Thanks in advance...
This would work great for light under my stand. Takes up no room and I'd have control of different light colors to add an "awe" factor. Thanks for the video Joey!
