In this video, Lloyd compares a cheap $5 Ballet TurnBoard to an expensive £30 Edea Figure Skating Spinner. Two great options to help you practice your figure skating turns and help you learn to skate like a pro.
These Ballet turnboards can be found everywhere online, and more often than not they all come from the same place..... AliExpress/AliBaba! If you see it on amazon for more money, I guarantee this is where the turnboard was sourced from. You even get figure skating stores selling these turn boards with their branding on them for a LOT more money, but ultimately its the same $5 piece of plastic and foam that came from Alibaba.
Ultimately when practising figure skating spins and figure skating turns on the floor, for $5 the ballet turn board doesn't do a bad job for the money. I might even go as far as recommending it for beginners due to an increased resistance when doing your ice skating spins!

    There are a few things that you overlooked slightly about the curved ballet board. First of all, it's not a 'put your toes right at the edge' sort of tool. You do have to experiment with your foot on it, like adjusting your blade on your skate, to find the right position, to figure out where it works best for you. Also, the bent board forces you to engage your core a bit more than the easier to spin board. I have the bent board and I notice that the second I get too lax, I put too much weight on the board, it resists. But if I tuck in the way I'm supposed to, then it spins easier. Every piece of equipment we purchase will take a period of getting used to. That bent board is a valuable tool if you use it correctly.

    Interesting insight! This was the first time using it right out the box in this video, I didn't dive too deep into the subject, I just wanted to answer the simple question "can it get the job done" which in my opinion it can. Interesting points you raise, so I appreciate the great comment! I'm sure it will help a lot of people out!

    There was a letter to an advice column in a Victorian newspaper that I once saw a reprint of, asking if blue or pink was more appropriate for girls. It said that since blue was associated with the virgin Mary, and pink was a faded version of red, color of the mythological war-god Mars (I am not making this shit up), blue was more appropriate for girls and pink for boys.

    Thank you! I have the cheaper spinner and was wondering if I should upgrade to the Edea. So...I can do 3-3.5 spins so far. Thank you for the exercise of keeping the leg back for a full rotation before bringing it forward. That has helped me get into scratch spin position, which I was having trouble getting to before. What exercises can I do to keep the spin going? This was the stage I was at on the ice as well. I think I got at most 5 rotations, and they were upright rather than scratch spins, except for once or twice. What should I be looking at doing next to improve? Or is it just a matter of paying attention to where my balance is falling towards when I have to step out? Alternately, should I try to speed up the spin, which it seems like I can do by swinging my leg around more quickly, but that also makes it harder to control my balance on the spin. Again, thanks!

  • @IceCoachOnline

    @IceCoachOnline

    4 жыл бұрын

    I'm glad to hear that exercise in the last spinner video helped you out :) To get more rotations in your spins you need to focus on two areas. The first is being balanced better during the spin and the second is generating more momentum into the spin. First off, improving your core strength and balance with help with this, then you need to work on your position during the spin itself (which getting some feedback on will often help). If you are balanced and in a good position during the spin, you can then work on adding a bit more momentum to get the spin turning faster. This can be done in various ways such as swinging the leg around with more force when hitting the "hook". You have to do this little by little as it will become very hard to control the spin each time you add more momentum to it, which is where the increased core strength and balance come into play. If you try and rush this process and just launch yourself into the spin without paying close attention to the position and technique, you will likely fall and hurt yourself. You when you feel balanced in your spin, and you only exit the spin as you run out of speed, you are ready to add more momentum into the entrance. If you are exiting the spin because you are losing balance and positioning, you should work on core strength and your balance. Seeking feedback on your spin position will help greatly too as you might be doing something wrong that you don't even realise! Hope this helps. - Lloyd

    That silicone sleeve is to be worn in pointe shoes to help cushion the toes. The padding on the dance turn board is because normally it is used in soft dance shoes or barefoot. You should do a collaboration after quarantine is over with a dancer taking about spinners.

    I didn't want to buy the Edea spinner for the price. So, I have the $5 Turnboard from Ali Express. It does have a lot of resistance and it slid from under me too. I couldn't balance well enough for the turns, and it was bigger than my foot, so I didn't know how to actually place my feet on it. But I can see how these turn boards and the Edea ones, can actually help with travelling on ice, once you get the hang of using it. I recently bought a Jerry spinner (metal plates) since they were roughly the same price as the Edea turn board. And although it's more fixated on the ground and can be used on almost any surface, the turns are very smooth and I would just have to master balancing on it and turning/centering my spins. The only thing it doesn't help with, is the travelling like the turnboards do. But I'm not good enough on the ice with spins to worry about travelling too much, so I'm sticking with the Jerry Spinner for now. Maybe one I get the mastery over the Jerry spinner and learn all the spins, then I'll probably try my Turnboard again or even get the Edea one.

  • @IceCoachOnline

    One of my patrons uses the Jerry spinner too and found it particularly helpful as their house is carpeted, which makes using their Edea Spinner challenging! During zoom classes they use the Jerry spinner too, and I found that it looked very good so am trying to get hold of one myself 😁 you can actually use that 5 buck Turnboard to practice different turns, powerpulls, and many other things. It doesn't have to be limited to using for spins.
