Cheap 4x4 Off-Road Truck! Is It Good? Redcat Racing Volcano EPX Pro Electric RTR Review | RC Driver

We’ve been pumping out a lot of reviews lately and some of those products are a bit higher up on the cost scale. We noticed in the comments our awesome viewers wanted to see some more budget friendly kits. So we listened. We got a hold of Redcat Racing who offers affordable radio control cars and asked them if they had something we could review that is fast, fun and more importantly easy on the wallet. Several vehicles actually arrived from Redcat and we chose the Redcat Racing Volcano EPX Pro to review first. This is an almost completely ready to run, (you need 4 AA batteries) 4-wheel drive, brushless off-road RC truck. This truck has been around the RC scene for a long time, but it’s new to us so we’re giving it the full review breakdown.

I bought 3 of these in 2017. They still run great. You can and probably will bend a few dogbones if you play hard. I did crack 1 chassis so now they all have the aluminum bottom plate. The kids love these trucks and I can fix them unlike most of the big box store trucks.

Just got my EPX pro and it cooks. Had a issue with the dog bones jamming into the drive cups, but once I solved that problem by adjusting to upper turnbuckles inward, problem solved. The aftermarket parts for the RC is pretty good, everything a person needs to trick out these rigs. It's a whole lotta RC for the money, badass in my opinion

I bought a Hurricane XP Pro (all aluminium upgrades) nitro .28 when Redcat was very new to the scene. I still have it and it is wicked fun and fast. When i received it it came with an FM transmitter, right after break-in the throttle went wide open and the car went straight into a concrete curb and exploded into a hundred pieces. I contacted Redcat, explained what happened, they sent me all of the parts needed to repair it at no charge. Great customer service.

I would like to see ECX reviews. The price point is unbeatable & the upgrades are very affordable. The 1/10 Ruckus runs over & through everything" KingBasher" The 1/10 Torment same base chassis has been converted by some to race on the track. The 1/18 torment is the best of the small hobby grade in its size. The Circuit/Amp is unlimited. Ungraded to street or stadium Truck, it performs well all around. Not comparing them to Losi/ Team Associated or other top brands. But at the price point with the upgrades, you can come in under $300 depending on your motor choice.

The best thing about these is that there are millions off them on the market by now, so everyone knows the weak points and there are a LOT of upgrades you can do to it. A 15C battery is a good place to start and then you can go up from there. Use 3S and parts will break big time. DON'T DO IT. This latest version has all the better parts so people shouldn't go comparing old versions to this one. Great value for the money imo.

My 4th or 5th outing was ripping in the snow doing some nuts in the driveway etc I hit a chug hole beside my drive way and broke a stub hub on the left rear. Waiting on parts for now. Hardest to get accustomed to was the double hit for reverse. As stated in another comment its factory set a 50% throttle to start then ramps in. From a rolling start it will wheelie on grass, cant get it to pop on the cold asphalt too much tire spin. It is smokin fast, dont have a gps to check but should have seen that mini van coming down the street. Had my truck in my yard and started from behind the van feathering it in and went smokin by the van that was doin 25 or 30 in less than half my 126 ft yard length. Hope my new stainless stub hubs and 90 mil dog bones come in tomorrow.

Hello all, Just received my volcano exp pro a few days ago. It’s wicked fast and I love it. I’m pretty new to the hobby and this is by far the best truck I’ve owned. Can anyone tell me how to adjust the camber on the front wheels? My left front wheel/tire is cambered more than the right one and it’s pulling a lot to the right.

Adjust the turn buckles on the volcano to fix the bottoming out issue . Should be bottom hole on knuckle and top hole i think on shock tower. I have to look at my volcano to verify. do that problems fixed.

I have an epx pro also with all the aluminum upgrades available. The differentials are always coming loose causing a grinding sound and the tires don’t have strong drive, when this happens I can hold the truck up and all wheels get drive but one will be noticeably weaker. So then I have to take the car apart to retighten the differential gears. Are there solutions, an upgrade differential I’m not aware of?

I've had a Volcano for 4-5 years and there is 2 major problems but the rest seems tough as nails . Weak points being weak half shafts that like to bend and in mine the receivers go bad a lot .Fixing to swap to traxxas electronics .

I'm new to RC and just got this truck for father's day. Might be a dumb question but, it's okay to use a 7.4 volt if it comes with a 7.2 volt?

I HAD a the older version of the Volcano brushless you reviewed, and I was pleased with the speed, but durability, was horrible. After a shorted speed controller, busted dog bones, busted hubs and carriers, it ended up in the trash, literally. I'm off to move onto a SCT, but I would like an opinion which truck to get that would be great for first time racing, good bashing, and fast. You have a great reviews R C Driver.

You can adjust the geometry of the suspension on these to keep the dogbones from binding on compression.
