Portage Power wanted to directly address the mortality the eels due to hydroelectric facilities. As such, they have implemented a safe passageway for the eels to travel both up and down the Ottawa River at Chaudière Falls. At the new Chaudière Falls Powerhouse, an eel ladder has been installed (a series of chutes that zigzag up the dam allowing eels to safely migrate over the powerhouse) on the upstream side, allowing the eels to safely bypass the facility and reach their natural habitat. During downstream migration, Portage Power installs a fine spaced rack to ensure they do not enter the generating station. Instead, the eels are now able to safely bypass the station through one of two newly installed bypass channels.
