Chattering Pottery with an Artisian Pottery Tools Trimming Chatter Tool!

Chattering is a neat method of trimming wheel thrown pieces in which the trim tool bounces during the trimming process resulting in a textural repeat pattern. I am using tools designed for chattering which were sent to me by Artisan Pottery Tools- but you can successfully chatter using regular trim tools and adjusting your angle of trimming to be more extreme to gouge, and also by holding the trim tool more loosely toward the end of the tool for less stability.
This video is possible because I received the chattering tool from Artisan Pottery Tools out of Manitoba. www.artisanpotterytools.com/ is the website to find the tools. Contact information: Phone: 204-901-4520 or artisanpotterytools@gmail.com

I made this video for my Ceramics II, III, and independent studyI students at Mason High School. I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 35 years, and I have been teaching for over 33 years, over the past 27 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics.
I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my KZread channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

I love chattering, it catches the glazes so well and creates some amazing effects!

Wow, I would have thought to hold that tool quite differently. More perpandicularthan parallel to the pot. I chatter all the time with an old hacksaw bent at a 90 degree angle. That's my favorite chattering tool.

I definitely see what you mean- however, the bent blade at the point of contact is actually perpendicular to the surface! There are three cutting surfaces- so they work with different angles.

So Cool! Can you tell me which is the one you are using? I see there are several different ones on their website.

Great question! RNSL is the SKU, it’s the round nib, chattering tool, according to the packing slip!
