Chateau de la Foret

This Château of the Forest also known as its true name Castle Moulbaix and Château de Chasteleer was designed in a Neo - Tudor style and built in 1860 by the order of the Marquis Du Chasteler Oswald. He was a descendant of the ancient Hainault family. The family Chasteler Du (the house Chasteleer or Van Chasteleer) were settled in Moulbaix since the middle ages. The Castle of the Forest replaced the house and feudal fortress that were originally built on the property in 1502. Some of the remains of the former castle can still be found on the property according to visits there. The current Chateau de la Foret was built by architect Desire Athois Limburg and is rectangular and flanked by four corner towers and is fortified with four octagonal turrets on top of the towers. The abandoned castle has 344 windows and is surrounded by 62 acres of land.
It now belongs to the children of the Count d’Ursel Aymard. The descendants cannot decided on a single owner and the castle has begun to fall into decay.

Fascinating and amazing beyond words of description. I'm a Carpenter by trade and this place is a true work of art. I try to contain my judgment on why the property fell into decay but it is relevant on today's society loosing Respect and Apreciation from which they came. Cruel World

how heartbreaking to see such grand beauty be allowed to just fall apart, sadly those that have so much dont seem to realize what they have and plain just dont care what happens to it, not wanting to put any of their money into keeping the beauty going, very sad, its from an era that has gone and will never return, such craftsmanship is able to be done by so few....i hope whoever bought it is able to restore her again

A few years ago I tried to buy the remains of a 19th century farmhouse. There was no mains water nor electricity, but it was a charming group of old buildings arranged around a small courtyard, and with land around it; plus it is next to where my parents live. I met one of the owners (they were 4 brothers and sisters) and called him every 3 months or so for a couple of years to check if they had moved things along with their solicitors (because they couldn't agree on the value). I tried to have a meeting with all of them at the same time, but apparently it is not possible for them to be in the same room, or they couldn't be bothered... I drove in front of the building this summer and a storm had torn a portion of the roof appart and a sculpted lintel broke and fell. Shame, I thought. But at the end of the day, even if this was nothing compared to this castle, it is not money that makes people stupid. It is just stupidity that makes people stupid.

Too bad there isn’t a law that requires the owners to maintain a property and if it remains abandoned for a few decades, the state can decide who to sell it too. Arrogance has a price. Especially when it comes to a country’s heritage such as these chateaus.

IN ENGLAND - the estate is given to the first born male, if no male heir, then the estate is given to the oldest male cousin. If no male cousin, then to the first born male uncle. This process has worked for generations and generations and thus few castles lay in ruin. Women are not to inherit property as it could fall into the hands of their prospective husband which would be outside of the family dynasty and bloodline.

The fallen ceiling plaster means an area of the roof has failed: It might be large or small, but it will be fatal to all below. Some of the furniture looks valuable, and the craftsmanship of the paneling and stucco work would be prohibitively expensive to duplicate. Why won't the heirs wake up and fix the roof, at least. So frustrating!

Ok to abandon a rotting big house due to the lack of money I can understand it. You can always sale it and move on. This chateau still is in a fairly good conditon (few money, taste and a good renovation plan could do marvels!). To abandon great antique furnitures and heirlooms shows luck of taste, education and indifirrence to your past. I feel so sad & angry watching this...

Typically SAD - Families can't stand for one to have more than the other - If "I" can't have it no one can!! mentality ruins many homesteads, if the children all own it and you can't make up your mind - Live in it together as a family home - as it was intended so many years before.....

Stupid owners.. The place is falling apart due to their greed they've two ways sell it and divide the profit equally or donate it to the govt who could make a museum, hotel whatever .. Instead its like this. Any idea is better than this
