Chasing waterfalls and fog - Landscape Photography with Simon Baxter

Judging by the forecast, I was quite hopeful of shooting a video that I've been wanting to film ever since I started to vlog last December but unfortunately the conditions just weren't as I'd hoped for. Plan B didn't work out either so I started to make my way home until I decided on an impromptu visit back to a local and hidden waterfall in the fog. The spontaneous local photography shoots are often the most enjoyable, possibly because there's little in the way of expectations. It would have been nice to show you somewhere new but it goes to show that repeated and frequent visits to nearby locations are always worthwhile for your landscape photography.

Dog and photographer in perfect harmony FANTASTIC!
Another really enjoyable video Simon, it always makes me chuckle when you stumble or slip and you just manage to hold the laughter in.

It wouldn't be a walk in the woods without a good slip ;-)
Lovely images; my first laugh of the day was the bit at the end with the water being poured out of the boots. Nice touch.
It always amazes me how you create atmospheric images that have a clear focal point standing out from the dense green of woodland vegetation. You have one hell of an eye. Stellar stuff, Simon.

Many thanks, Martin! Much appreciated!
Unplanned may be what you are saying, but before digital, I took a photography class and the instructor had us go out in the woods. We had an Instamatic camera with 12 shots on it. We had to find a spot and stop and take all twelve shots from the same spot without moving. Getting twelve different images from the same spot, in my opinion, this increases your creativity. When you have a whole forest in front of you the choices are endless. I am enjoying your creativity in all your videos. Thanks!

Many thanks, Christopher. That's a good exercise to do! Anything that makes you slow down and appreciate the nuances.
Plan C was great! Send some of that shortbread my way! In the end, going back the next day proved your fog comments to be spot on. Those trees are brilliant.

Thank you very much, James. The shortbread doesn't last long in this house ;)
always look forward to your uploads Simon, thanks for posting
Plan C saves the day! Fog certainly added atmosphere to the shot the next day.
Best one yet Simon. Love the first image too.
Those last shots are magical!
'Plan C' was awesome. Great video as always king of the woodland.

Another enjoyable and informative vlog. Thanks for posting Simon.
I can’t believe you walked around with that amount of water in your boots 😂. Another great vlog 👍
that's awesome! spontaneous adventures are the best! Great photos too! All the green plus the rain/fog ambiance is really relaxing. I love your vlogs!

Simon I have watched all you videos and always really love them, but this one stands apart from the rest. I really like how you made the vlog flow nicely from one moment to the next, especially having done it out of pure spontaneity. Cheers. Well done.

Another AWESOME video. Thank you, look forward to the next one.
It's like you were walking in private pools, with those filled wellies! Another great video Simon.
Amazing Simon, simply amazing. Somehow you've made the dreariest of days into something fantastic. You come through the lens just so genuine and are such an inspiration.

Great vlog Simon, sometime the good old plan "C" is worth waiting for. Also goes to show that sometimes something good comes from nothing:) :)
Another great video Simon, especially like the silver birch shot.
Great video Simon, closing few seconds let us see what you went through to make it! Thank you for your time and effort!
I felt your pain at the start Simon, when you explained that your planned video didn’t go ahead due to the conditions. I had a very similar experience when I visited Wales recently and it just bucketed down and all my good planning was washed away. Like you, I just went with it and I managed to capture a few unexpected shots (as well as a vlog), so all wasn’t lost. I really enjoyed this more unplanned approach in this video. Despite the last minute change, you ended up with some wonderful images mate. Thanks for sharing your experience Simon.

Now I see why Meg was soaked! She looked quite pitiful! And another great vlog! I always look forward to them!
Thank you again for taking us through your thought process for the shots. Plan C wins again!
That looked alot of fun, sliding down the slopes. Meg looked abit wet!!
Great video as usual Simon. Love your woodland pictures.
Your filled your boots for certain! What a great composition at the end though 🙏
Very nice Simon. As someone who lives in the desert, it is very refreshing to see glorious green foliage, rain and fog! I haven't seen a cloud in two weeks :)
Another good one. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait for the next one
Great Video Simon. I love the fern and the waterfall. It's just stunning. I could literally watch your videos all day. can't wait to get some of your prints.

I just love this forest you are in. We don't anything like that here, as it is very dry and dusty. I need to come on one of your workshops to experience this magnificent forest, so the newsletter has been subscribed. Thanks for sharing and keep it up.
No Megscapes today, but that's okay. Your vlogs can't be all about your furry companion. Lol. Fog or not, that is one magnificent tree covered in green velvet. Loved the shot.

Simon, as always, great blog. Slippery slope giggles, Meg loving running in the Beck. Great recovery crossing the water. Keep up the good work
Absolutely beautiful at 4:39 Great tip I learnt about the shutter speed on this one...sometimes it is nice to have some movement
Thank you Simon.

For "Plan C" I'd say you had a successful outing Simon. You were right though the images the following day with fog looked even better! Keep up the good work.
Another excellent video. I love these and you have me as hooked as Thomas Heaton. I’ll be telling everybody how I subscribed after your second video when the 100,000 subscribers award arrives :). Keep them coming and buy taller wellies!

I love every single one of your videos.
Great vlog as ever, one of your best yet, unplanned obviously works! Also laughed at bit when you skidded down the bank, the first skid mark for when you positioned the camera clearly visible! :)

A passionate chase... and wet feet. Great video. Great sharing.
Another superb video. "I'll just give another 11 minutes and 52 seconds more of my time" I thought and then give myself a break from my computer. 2 hours (and several of your videos) later and I'm still here. I've just remembered I have a job to get to tomorrow so I'm off now :D

Stunning, as always! Poor Meg did not look happy! I look forward to these incredible videos of your beautiful countryside being from Atlanta. The trees take my breath away! What is that old saying, "the grass is always greener on the other side"? I think that is true... Great job!

Bellísimo. Un sueno
You know you're soaked through when you squeeze socks that are still on your feet and a river flows out.
Very nice video Simon as always . Great shot of the star of the show at the end.
Always enjoy your videos.
Wow! stunning...
Beautiful video with your usual amazing images, that oak tree is incredible and it's a great find. Your post editing is something special too, you seem to be any expert at those delicate touches that really make an image.

A beautiful location and nice photos
beautiful images Simon great vlog thank you for sharing
Excellent Simon , a great inspiration 👌
Beautiful picture...and great video
Hi Simon , i did a shoot last year on Seaton Carew beach. The fog was so thick everywhere, you could only have a one foot distance of vision....i got some awesome shots that i was very chuffed with. Always look forward to your uploads, keep up the great work.
Greatly enjoyed that!

G'daye Simon. I came across you by accident and I must say, I absolutely loved your vid and your images.
Great Vlog, love the shots
Plan C worked out very well if you ask me! ;-) Clearly, you are a trooper - but Meg deserves some props as well: not sure if your feet were any worse off the she was on this trek. Lovely images of that Oak Tree - very inspirational. Thanks for sharing your artistry!

OMG how much water in those Wellingtons 😯, Fantastic Simon always makes me want to grab my camera and head out, loved the first image leading up the waterfall to the Oak tree, F9.0 was bang on"SUPERB"
Like your vlogs very much Simon - liked and subbed :)
Don't worry about the video being unplanned, Simon, your thoughts are as always reason enough to be inspired. BTW: Loved that look on Megs wet face at the end! Was she worried about her master having wet feet? :-D
Great Vlog...thanks :)
enjoyed that....
great work!
It was all going so well, great video and fantastic images/composition as usual - then, right at the end, Meg steals the whole thing again! When will you learn :-)
Another enjoyable video Simon. The next days shots did have that bit extra with a hint of fog. I just wish I could see images in woodland like that but sadly for some reason I rarely see them. Perhaps it's because I live on the coast and am tuned to seascapes which is my local patch. Have to say that Meg navigates fast flowing water and slippery slopes with consummate ease compared to yourself :-)
@SimonBaxterPhotography

I guess it is something you tune into. I'll have to revisit the coast at some point to see how I fare there. Yep, Meg doesn't seem to care about whether you can see the bottom or not :)
Nice video Simon
Thank you Simon, love the greenery that you have, being in Australia it is a different green. Drier rather than than that lush green. nice shots though ad lib.
wonderful vlog and images. Just subscribed and liked. Keep them coming, Simon. Thank you.
Really nice shots. Love the waterfall with the misty landscape above it. Reminded me of catholic paintings where heaven is always visible at the top of the frame... Sort of! Meg looked pretty sad to be going home :D

As always Simon - stunning images. If I ever plan something it rarely works out.. Spontaneity is the key then if that doesn't work out then I didn't plan it so it wasn't my fault lol :-D
@SimonBaxterPhotography
7 жыл бұрын
Haha. Planning can be good for videos. When I say planning, I only mean having a rough idea of what I may shoot and the general theme of what I want to cover. These spontaneous episodes I guess are more vloggy rather than an episode with a particular message. Many thanks
You are awesome, man :)
Another great video and a good lesson in perseverance, Simon! knowing what you want and not settling. Good catch on the slope by the way! I'd have been face first! ;o)

It's all about perseverance and repeated visits for me :) Many thanks! Oh, it wasn't me who snapped that tree btw ;-)
Very good job!!! Your dog is super!!! ahah..;-)
I'm glad you persevered Simon, and made this spontaneous video. Question about the waterfall image: where do you focus to get top tree to foreground all in focus? 1/3 from bottom? Hyperfocal distance?
@SimonBaxterPhotography
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. I was at 35mm and focused on the foliage to the left of the waterfall . None of the scene was particular close to the lens so focusing on the midground at f9 ensured the image was sharp from front to back.
