Chasing The San Diego Imperial Valley Railroad to El Cajon - San Diego

On March 26, 2018: heading out trackside along the former La Mesa branch line now owned Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) Orange Line route to see the San Diego Imperial Valley Railroad with San Diego Imperial Valley Railroad (SDIV) 3GS21B Genset #701 and Arizona & California Railroad (AZRC) EMD GP40-3 #3112 with Geneses & Wyoming paint, AZRC #3112 was sent from Arizona to San Diego, California just Incase a locomotive would break down.
This train runs at midnight and early mornings when most of San Diego’s light rail trolley’s are out of service, although along the way they will meet the last MTS trolley at the 47th street trolley stop and will proceed east. this particular train will usually run on Sunday and Monday departing around 11:45pm, although they will run on other days when customers are ready, heading back west around 1:35am from El Cajon, CA and arriving around 2:30am into the San Diego Railroad yard. If crews do not get everything done the power will be tied down at El Cajon.
Come along as we catch the San Diego Imperial Valley Railroad through different parts of southeastern San Diego, California running on San Diego’s light-rail trolley tracks, Starting off making our way on Commercial St, Imperial Ave, La Mesa, CA, and last destination El Cajon, CA where they will dropped off loaded covered hoppers and bring back empty cars back to the railroad yard in San Diego, CA. El Cajon is only 12 miles from Downtown San Diego’s Railroad yard & Only two industrial business are left still in El Cajon, CA serving Paper to the AJM Packaging and mainly plastic pellets to Toro Agricultural Irrigation.
I hope you enjoy this video, Thank you for watching and see you soon.

So, the A&C 3112 locomotive has a similar horn that BJRR (LTEX) 3809 has (Leslie S3, i guess) (though i like better the horn that BJRR (LTEX) 3808 and 3814 has (a Airchime 3K), similar to former SDIV 3861 locomotive horn.

This incredible footage makes me want to see more videos of this train during the dark evening hours of the Orange Line. :) Any chance you can do additional videos of the train passing through various stations like Grossmont and Spring Street or other areas where you can safely watch the train pass by you? Again, great footage. Love it!

Interesting how freight runs on San Diego Trolley track through SDIV Railroad. I beleive the portions of the Trolley tracks that are freight capable are the Orange Line (San Diego to El Cajon via Encanto, Lemon Grove, La Mesa Village, and El Cajon) and the Blue Line (San Diego to San Ysidro through National City and Chula Vista). The Green Line (Santee to Downtown San Diego through La Mesa, SDSU. Mission Valley, Old Town, and Middletown) does not currently run freight due to the characteristics of the line. The portion Imperial & 12th to Friars & Napa would likely be capable of freight. The same with the Santee to Alvarado Medical Center portion. But the portion from Fashion Valley to Alvarado Medical Center would not be suitable due to its raised height shift. Even more unsuitable is the fact that it goes underground through San Diego State University (Indoor underground tunnels and station) which is not likely ventilated for diesel engines. I am not sure if the line from Old Town to UCSD is freight capable or not. I would suspect a portion of it would be but the issues would be the turnaround at UTC and a portion of the like (UCSD to UTC) is raised and elevated.

Thank you for watching, Yes for the most part you are on track with the capabilities for freight running with MTS, Correct the blue line extension to UCSD is impossible once you head up the steep incline near La Jolla, although the tracks are leveled at a good rate beyond Old Town and as far as the 52 freeway, Green line has the same similarities as the blue line extension.

I was so mad at myself. I went down there sunday night into monday Dec 12 and I never saw the train arrive so I thought it would arrive a little later. I sat out there until 1am, it was 43 degrees, it was a ghost town, and it never came. So I went back to the Arnele Ave station and I saw two workers on the tracks and they said there was track work going on at the 47th street station so no freight train was coming. I was mad because I saw that on the arrival sign and I ignored it. So I'm going to try again this weekend.

@@sdrailproductions I've actually had a little success since then. I went down there a week later and it did come and I got two videos of it and it was 37 degrees while I was filming so that was hard standing out there for that long. Now they only have one company they serve so you'll just see one car now. I need to go down there two more times and get the train coming in. It's frustrating though because theres been no train in El Cajon in 3 weeks so sometimes I've been out there for nothing.
