Chase Sapphire Preferred vs Reserve (Explained)

In this video, we compare the Chase Sapphire Preferred vs Chase Sapphire Reserve to see which Chase credit card is worth it. Each of these credit cards is great, and this Chase Sapphire Preferred vs Reserve video covers everything. Click "Show More" to see Ad Disclosure.
Both of these Chase Sapphire cards will give you good value no matter what - whether that’s from the welcome bonus, points earning categories, points redemption features, or other benefits. But with a $550 annual fee on the Sapphire Reserve vs the Sapphire Preferred with its $95 annual fee, for some people it can be tough to justify the more expensive credit card. But here, we go over how to decide which of these popular travel credit cards will be best for you based on your spending and how you plan to redeem those points. We’ll also talk about some of the other benefits and features found on both the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Sapphire Reserve which can be useful for those that travel a lot.
Overall, I think that if you do plan to travel frequently, then the Sapphire Reserve might be the better option. If you just want better value for a cheaper annual fee, then the Sapphire Preferred might be better. But there is a lot to consider, so this video tries to cover it all to help you decide what is best for yourself.

    The Preferred is going to bring a lot of value to most everyday regular normies like myself. If you have an abover average spending rate--paroticularly on travel--the reserve may be a better option. Either way both cards are metal, so that's a massive benefit. Great video!

    Terrific job Danny!!! The CSP is perfect for me. The welcome bonus was perfect last year (100K points, plus no annual fee in the first year), the transfer partners are great (especially Hyatt), and for the occasional traveler, coupled with a Freedom card, it's a great combination. Hey my friend! Hope all is well. This is an excellent video on a topic many people are curious about. Great job! I agree with your conclusion for most people, but for me personally, the CSR has proven to be better. I’ve had it for a few years, and the math (not to mention the slightly better insurances, etc) seems to give the CSR the advantage. This was particularly true during COVID. Chase did a good job of making cardholders “whole” with modifications to the $300 credit and the Pay Yourself Back feature. So, for now, I’m hanging on to the CSR. But as you said, you can’t really go wrong here, and the ability to product change as your life situation changes makes the decision pretty low risk. Sorry to be long winded today! :)

  • @Daniel_Braun

    What's up Anthony! Yeah you're definitely right, the CSR has the advantage for the right Chase customer so I'm glad that you're able to get the value from it. I could see myself upgrading to it in the future for those insurances and the point redemption values as I continue to travel more. I've always viewed these cards the exact same way and looked at it as "low risk" because of the product change options. Haha the longer the comments the better! Is there a way to tell when I would have opened my original CSP? I had one, downgraded down to the regular Sapphire in 2020, and now I want to apply for this card again because of the 80,000 welcome bonus. It isn’t on my credit report as an inquiry any longer, so I know it’s been longer than 2 years. Thanks!

    Hey trying to decide between the chase sapphire preferred and the united mileage. the CSP comes with 80,000 points and the united comes with 50,000 miles. I’m planning on traveling a lot in the coming year and living abroad currently which one will give me the max value? The lounges that the united mileage offers is also persuasive.. any advice?

    I think if you can take advantage of the waived fees due to being military, it makes more sense to get the CSR since is free with all the benefits. Then for gas just go with the USAA Amex… 5% on 3k for gas and military base purchases.

    Hello Daniel, i'm looking into these card and I stumble on your video. Great video but I have a question. For the Preferred, the $50 hotel credit is for any website or Chase ultimate website only? you said look on other website for price comparison so I'm curious that $50 will apply to any hotel stay book with the card or through chase portal? thank you if you can answer this.

    So the $50 hotel credit will only be applied on a hotel booked through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, not a hotel booked on any other website. Good question, so I hope that clarifies it!

    If you use your points for travel transfer partners like Hyatt or American, the travel portal isn’t very useful. I use my Chase trifecta almost exclusively to maintain my Globalist status at Hyatt. That doesn’t leave many days for other hotels. Maybe if in the future we fly more as a family but right now it doesn’t make much sense.

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    Yeah I'm the same way where I'm focusing my points to redeem for Hyatt stays to get what I think is the best value for Chase points. So I value the 1:1 transfer parters available on both cards more than the better redemption rates in the portal for the Reserve. So because of that - I go with the CSP!

    Great Video! Any reason you didn't mention Doordash benefits $60 ($5 per month, stack upto $15 every 3 months and spend) and Peleton $120 that you get with the CSR. Also, what value you put into Visa Infinite. For example, I have Shipt free until 2025 due to having CSR Visa Infinity, which I use to get free same day deliveries from Target often.

  • @Daniel_Braun

    @Daniel_Braun

    Thanks so much! And basically I felt that those benefits are just minor details and only provide value for certain people that use those services. Lyft is something that I feel like more people use and it's related to travel and transportation which are common themes for the card. But I believe the Peloton benefit expires soon in June 2022 as well. The Doordash benefits are a nice little bonus that can be good to have, but probably won't be the dealbreaker for most people when deciding between these cards. And for Visa Infinite I feel the same way, it's very minor benefits that will be useful for some if they look into these details. That Shipt benefit could definitely be nice and convenient for you!

    It’s a net cost. So you pay $550 up front but then throughout the year you get $300 back on travel expenses that you would likely already pay for. So over the course of a year it’s a net $250 cost

    1.5 on CSR vs 1.25 on CSP really doesn't matter: if you don't intend to transfer points, US Bank's Altitude Reserve wipes the floor with both CSP and CSR at EAF of $75. 1. Better multipliers: 3x on dining, travel, and mobile wallet!!! 2. Easier to redeem credit: the annual credit of $325 is automatically redeemed on travel and dining. 3. Easier to redeem points: your points can be redeemed on travel purchases in realtime at 1.5cpp. 4. Redeeming credit/points also earn points (3x)
