Wheein said before that she's the last to be recognized in Mamamoo because her voice is not distinct... But eventually she realized that it's her strength because she can easily blend with other singers well. That's why she's said to be the backbone of Mamamoo.

Wheein's voice is both a blessing and a curse cause she can support all the other 3 voices of mamamoo so well that she ends up like a back vocal / filler on most of their recent songs. But her voice is definitely the glue that brings everything together.

I followed Mamamoo since their Piano Man era (their 2nd comeback), and I didn't really care at all about Wheein until I watched their Road to Sampo performance. Hwasa, Solar, and Moonbyul were the bells and whistles of that performance (as in, they're the ones who grab attention your initially), but after a few listens, I came to realize that Wheein was the one who truly conveyed the passion of that song. She might not have the most distinctive voice in a group, but she has SUCH a soulful voice, there's no doubt she's the musical backbone of Mamamoo.

I have to disagree. I think her voice is really distinct. Her voice is the best voice for me. Not "one of the bests", but the best. Period.

wheein was a great choice for this show because there is no other vocalist in the industry who is as good as her at helping others shine, while also creating a steady base for a song/performance with her voice. she knows how to carry a song while also supporting the other vocalists singing with her. she does it a lot in mamamoo, their songs heavily lean on her harmonies, background vocals, or chorus vocals. the other members can showcase their own vocal colors and techniques thanks to her vocal base. but also it's because mamamoo are just that good at teamwork. wheein gets to shine in mamamoo because the members recognize how important she is to the group. they have a good understanding of each other's parts and strengths. that's why i appreciate mamamoo so much as a vocal group.

The premise of the show is professional singers select regular people with regular jobs (who’ve auditioned) and compete together with other like duos; hence the name of the show “Duet Song Festival”. So you’re right in assuming that they haven’t sung together a lot. Wheein being a part of a vocal heavy group definitely must’ve played a part since they do harmonize a lot. Just a great performance all in all. Edit: Wrote this whole paragraph and you did get the info later in the video lol.

FINALLY! I knew you're gonna love this video and you guys didn't dissappoint in highlighting HARMONY (even before reading the email haha) - something im so proud of wheein cause she's REAAAALLY GOOD AT IT. Thank you for affirming that this is such a great example of how a DUET is done. Same with you guys, I had to replay that high part in the 2nd chorus so many times before confirming that it was wheein doing the higher part, just shows how in-sync they are. Anyone could flip from melody to harmony and back in split seconds. Extra awesome when they switched parts in the final chorus with heeju going for the higher note this time. Love the extra appreciation to my girl Heeju! I knew you're gonna love her. Actually, wheein wants to meet up with her again. They first met when wheein crashed her eat-all-you-can bbq dinner with her friends, asking heeju to be her duet partner. I hope with this video, they can have that long overdue reunion.

This was the era when MMM went on a ton of music competition shows, Immortal Songs is where they had the most success and grew super popular with all ages. They even nabbed a few wins against heavy competition, which was unheard of for Kpop idols to do then.

She was on Duet Song Festival before with a rapping dude and they killed it together (I think they even won the episode) Not so much about harmonies, but it's a perfect example how to start slow and soft and at the end everybody was on their feet to join the party they started on the stage.

Wheein is so exceptional at blending that it's very hard to notice when she belts out higher harmonies. For example, she hits super high notes in Mamamoo's Delilah performance, but I initially thought it was Solar hitting those high notes until I listened very closely. It also happens in their Immortal Songs medley (which you guys reacted to) when Wheein was harmonizing with Hwasa - she growled her parts, but you guys thought it was Hwasa growling in your reaction. :)

Wheein has been harmonizing most of her life, in high school with hwasa (and probably with other ppl) and with mamamoo since predebut. Mamamoo members have said many times that they practice harmonizing together all the time, even before debut

Another crazy thing is that this performance was only 3 years into her career Mamamoo started in 2014 😅

19:39 actually she does sing the higher part! If you hear closely, Wheein's voice is in the lower part in it sounds so clear since they both has very different type of voice!

Nice catch, this was performed a year (more or less) before Anymore, so highly likely the time, the breathiness was out of habit rather than choice. An aside, not just wheein, but all of mamamoo keep improving over time. If you try to listen like say to I Miss You when it was released in 2016 and their 2019 queendom performance, improvement most noticeable with their phrasing. EDIT: saw you reacted to Big Mama, on the show, they actually sang 2 songs together, this and Day Day. Panelists also couldn’t believe she’s not profesh 😂 and mentioned their pairing is Big Mamamoo with how good they were. Problem is, I don't think Wheein has truly performed Goodbye live without a rather loud and intrusive backing track. It's a shame, because she was able to pull off Anymore completely raw without backing track, so I don't know why she's never performance Goodbye raw. But then again, she was younger and in better vocal shape imo when she sang Anymore, so.

The original singer of this song is called “Gummy.” She is a singer with incredible vocal quality and amazing voice. I definitely recommend listening to her song.

I very much hope you guys react to Mamamoo's Road to Sampo performance one day! It's their best vocal performance to date imo, and it's so musically powerful that it genuinely shocked me to my core when I watched it for the first time. Mamamoo has never topped that performance in their careers imo.

If I'm not wrong.. In this show usually the other singer is a random person and both of them have to get votes from the audience to reach a certain goal which is at the bottom right. They do rehearse and distribute the lines before they perform.

Highly recommend Red Velvet's Killing voice that's coming out later today

I'd love to watch more of this kind of shows with you. There's also one were they invite a famous artist or group that has to guess which of the contestants can actually sing from a pair where one is lip syncing and then they sing a small duet with them. I think they have way less rehearsing time and you still get great duos. There's also one that I don't remember the name, but there's two teams of famous guests and they pick someone to sing with from a set of contestants that all lip sinc to each other's voices, so they have to pick the ones that they believe have the voices and style they want, then get like an hour or so to practice and then they sing. It's fun to see how the guests reason their choices and then how they match with the contestants. I've seen how people that have certain experiences with directing or with singing certain styles live pick up the subtleties of body language, mic position and such to identify the contestants and how sometimes they are so sure and it was not the case. I also like them because sometimes the contestants are so so good but their genre is not really pop so the duet is interesting

I'm going to have to revisit it too, thanks. Also about the show- It's a live audience that votes if they like the performance. The other person who sings with Wheein is actually just a normal person (not a celebrity) who is being chosen by Wheein (she was given a choice by the show, and the normal person would audition in order to sing with a celebrity in the show)

As I listened to whee in at any collab, and even on edited collabs(DK egostistic , Wendy honey, BTS dimple). She blends so well with any voice that she sings with, and it's always beautiful to the ears

The other woman was just a regular person. I think they apply for this show and then the singer pick who they want to sing with. Wheein won her round 2/3 times she was on this show and won all of it the first time she was there, the year (or two) before this. Someone made an AI version of her singin Seven by Jungkook, and she said it sounded like she did years ago. She has changed her singing style so much since she was younger

I might have said this before, but I really think that "DAY6 "I'll try" Live Video" is an impressive one that you absolutely should try reacting to, cause the vocals (and THE HAR-MO-NIES) are absolutely INCREDIBLE
