Charming Kent Village, Chilham, English Village Walk & The Smallest town in Britain!

Chilham is a charming Kent village and is known the world over as Chillingbourne in A Canterbury Tale from the 1944 film. We take an early morning walk around this charming Kent village just as the fog was lifting to show you some of the sights and history of this pretty place.
As a bonus, we also visit the smallest town in Britain by heading to Fordwich just a few miles outside of Canterbury and close to Chilham. We hope you enjoy the tour.

As others have said already it is really a treat for all of us to visit these charming and possibly "new to us" quaint villages. The buildings are so nicely preserved and it is a credit to everyone involved who keep them so in tact and some, still in use. I have to agree with you however that seeing a car park inside the square or in "prime position" within the villages is such an eyesore. I suppose we have to be tolerant, cars are a necessity of modern life - but........just wish there was a more esthetic solution. xx

Thank you for the lovely comment. Yes the cars are a pain but particularly here there is very little space in chilham for them to park otherwise. As you say a pain for us as viewers but they do have to live there and if it were me, i would also want to be able to park outside my own home or very close.

A foggy English morning amidst a Tudor Era town. What a treat! I noticed very few (if any) thatched roofs. In general the half-timber buildings seemed much less catywampus and crooked than I expected based on their age. Perhaps in such a small town they have been occupied and/or maintained continuously? Or maybe the lower walls are brick instead of timber construction? Chilham is indeed charming. Thank you for the tour!

Yet again a lovely tour, I love seeing these villages. Some of those streets must be a driving challenge. What exactly do the listings on buildings mean? And also what was the lovely bacground music to this video? Thanks again, Cheers Cheryl 🙂

The background music was:- Behind the Fog - Claude Signet Neptune - Bonnie Grace Robin - S.A. Karl If a building is listed as Grade I, this is because the site is of exceptional national, architectural or historical importance. A Grade II listed building is defined as a UK building or structure that is "of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve it 😊

FYI, The Fordwich Arms is one of the few Michelin-starred restaurants (1 star) in the Canterbury area - I plan on visiting it for dinner when I visit Canterbury this summer!

@@MemorySeekers I just came back from my UK trip, and visited Canterbury on my own as a day trip from London via train a week ago! I got an anytime ticket from London to Sturry using the Southeastern Railway, and was able to "break" my journey in Canterbury. I started off the day in Canterbury at the King's Corner for lunch, which is a lovely cafe with some Turkish and Uzbek dishes. I spent the next 5.5 hours exploring the sites, including St. Martin's Church, St. Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury Cathedral, Eastbridge Hospital, and the Franciscan Gardens. I then took the Southeastern train one stop to Sturry, and walked 0.6 miles (0.9 km) through Sturry and Fordwich to get to the restaurant. Since my train arrived at 5:16 PM, I had enough time to stop and take a few photos of the sites, including the one-lane bridge over the Great Stour River, the Fordwich Town Hall, the Fordwich Arms, and the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. The church building itself was closed, but the outside of the property was open. I had a 6:00 PM reservation at the restaurant, and was assured when making the reservation that I would be able to partake in the tasting menu and be out of there by 8:15 PM to catch my 8:32 PM train back to London. I got there around 5:45 PM, washed my face, ordered a non-alcoholic cocktail at the bar, and was seated inside just before 6:00 PM. Due to the threat of rain that evening, the patio/terrace was only open for pre-dinner bar seating. It would have been lovely to sit out there, and as it turned out it didn't rain at all during the time I was seated inside (I had a window with an obstructed view of the river). The server did ask if I wanted the window open during the meal service, and I happily said yes, as it allowed cool air inside the building. The food itself was delicious and presented beautifully. I did the full tasting (including the optional langoustine/lobster course), which came out to around $200 USD (£155) including a £3 non-alcoholic ginger beer. With the quality of the food and service, I felt that the price was reasonable. The food kept getting better as the courses rolled along - the bread and butter service was delicious, the duck liver parfait course (with warm doughnuts) was an amazing combination that I wouldn't have even thought of, the langoustine course (lobster "three ways") was a great addition, and the meat entree (38 day aged rib of Hereford beef with peppercorn sauce, glazed shortrib) was outstanding. Dessert was excellent as well, and was a 3-course affair, with a small strawberry "pre-dessert", along with outstanding chocolate course. The final petit four was a small chocolate bar with coffee flavoring, which sat in a small chest sitting on coffee beans. While the courses were small, there were many of them and I was full by the end of the dinner. I discreetly checked my phone during the dessert course, and reminded my server that I needed to catch the train. I saw it was running 6 minutes late, and ended up leaving the restaurant at 8:20 PM, making it to the train station at 8:30 PM with 8 minutes to spare. The train was a non-express train, and I transferred at Ashford International to an express train, making it to St. Pancras station just before 10:00 PM. I am glad I visited Canterbury & The Fordwich Arms, and consider the whole day to be one of the highlights of my 2.5 week trip in England!
