Charlie Munger SELLS Alibaba Stock! BABA Share Buyback Update!

Charlie Munger Warren Buffett's right hand man had bought and held shares in Alibaba through his Daily Journal portfolio. Well we received the latest 13f filing from The Daily Journal corporation which revealed selling in all stocks their own and a reduction in their Alibaba position by 35%! Now that Charlie Munger has passed does that mean that The Daily Journal no longer wishes to hold shares in Alibaba? Additionally, Alibaba reported the data on their most recent quarterly efforts on share repurchase announcing 4.8B USD in shares had been bought back! The total of shares outstanding shrunk by 5.1% in the last year!

Between the two share buy backs and the last dividend, I calculate BABA stock has given shareholders a 9.97% gain. Yet the stock remains in the toilet. That's fine. I'll just hold it until it goes back to $319. With the 9.97% the new $319 is $350..

The banks were mostly capital gains. I suspect the sell in BABA was to offset the capital gains in bank stocks with loss in BABA.

The strange thing is that DJCO still hasn’t announced who will be managing the stock portfolio. Munger had stated that once he is gone, they would find someone else to manage the portfolio (an extremely vague statement). The last time I checked, Munger is still dead. A $500 million dollar company that is not providing critical information to shareholders.

Great video! Must of been SEC rules that would prevent from selling right after munger spoke highly of Alibaba on the DJCO annual meetings. They couldn’t sell the entire position back then in 2022. Now, they can reason the selling: they are selling a bag of stocks, not just baba. And of course, munger’s passing away as he was managing this fund

Yea, quite possibly there’s some sort of rule based reason for the timing. I’m not surprised that someone else would have taken over the portfolio and been uncomfortable holding Alibaba. Certainly not a conventional position. Vinny

Not shocked with the sale. They probably want to hold less securities (have talked about) and the loss of $baba allows them to use that to sell down a bit of everything without tax hits.

Bro if they will do buybacks for next couple of years it means that insiders will accumulate in this prices, i can see the price in near term future getting lower to 60´s. We can see the sentiment of china is negative, because of the housing market, banking prblems, corono virus, debt etc... This is positive for long term investors, because the sentiment can switch very quickly after market recovery. China's technology is getting better and better, in the case of China today makes up to 42% of the global e-commerce market. In the US, e-commerce is the dessert but in China, it is the main course. I see alibaba doing well like amazon or even faster!

I'm maintaining moderate exposure to China. They have some massive issues (overleveraged local government lending vehicles) BUT massive potential. These valuations are low enough that I'd feel foolish for ignoring them. Not gonna bet the farm. Happily gonna bet 10% of the farm ;)
