"The Kid" was Jackie Coogan who later played Uncle Fester on the Addams Family. His parents took all the money he made. Law made to protect child actors is known as the "Jackie Coogan Law".

True. But I think only a few states such as California and New York require that child professionals have a Coogan Account and it only requires that 15% of their earnings are set aside and protected. Coogan sued his parents and the law was passed in California.

I was 7 when I saw Charles Chaplin in a silent movie. An organist, on stage, played music appropriate to the mood. It was an automated restaurant scene. Very funny. I'm 93 now.

Jackie Cogan, the kid, was a good guy, too. He later pushed for what was called the Coogan law that forced the studios to put most of a child actor’s income into a trust fund so their parents couldn’t steal all of it. He was the most famous kid actor of the time and made tons of movies and really had no childhood. When he turned 18 he went to collect his money and it had been all been used by his parents to buy expensive cars and jewelry and furs.

Yes, and in a way it is a blessing that sound would not be matched to the moving image until 1927. It meant that for twenty years, Charlie Chaplin gained a career in the Silent Era. Comedy could bed itself down before sound came along in order to give as much consolation and happiness as possible in what were very hard times. Unlike the comedy-dominated Silent Era, today the airwaves are dominated by misery guts entertainment. We can supposedly take it because we are supposedly rich, well cushioned and comfortable, at least. Could we even be happy? We have forgotten how to be cheerful in today’s world. In that sense, we ARE indeed poorer than our great-grandparents. For every extra penny they received, they smiled a little. For every extra song they sang, they continued singing with the same gusto. But life was hard. Radio was barely in existence, never mind the idea of recorded music.

Charlie Chaplin was the best director world can ever have. His movies and acting beats all movies till date. Todays movies are just graphics..... but that is an ICON.... I think will last for ever. Expressing every detail and getting us emotionally attached from first scene to last without a word.

If you are reading this at night, you should get some sleep, and don't stress about everything going on in the world, or what you are going through. Don't dwell on things from the past, don't stress on your future. Just live your life, because you only get one. Do whatever makes you happy, not what other people want from you. For me, I'm gonna wake up tomorrow morning, get hit the gym, and cherish life for the amazing blessing that it is. I hope you do the same and have an amazing day as well!

Gosh watching this clip just immediately took me back to those days which till today I remember bring atleast a tear to my eye. Thanks to jackie Coogan child actors are protected. His mother enjoyed every cent he made as a child, never thinking to save for her son. The jackie Coogan laws mandate that a parent of a minor child must put away at least one third of their income or they are in violation of a federal mandate. I'm glad he was still able to get work as a grown man. You were the cutest, jackie.

That may be true, but we lost Bobby Driscoll from Disney dismissing him after he made a ton of money for the studio. AfterTreasure island, he got zits & wasn't cute and cuddly anymore. We just lost Dean Stockwell a week or so ago at 85. He worked as an adult, but in later years became an abstract sculptor.

now i understand why people are so fascinated by silent movies... living in the age where movies all have conversation, it didn't occur to me that they'd be appealing.

And composer. Chaplin's compositions produced three popular songs. "Smile", composed originally for Modern Times (1936) and later set to lyrics by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons, was a hit for Nat King Cole in 1954.] For Limelight, Chaplin composed "Terry's Theme", which was popularised by Jimmy Young as "Eternally" (1952).[424] Finally, "This Is My Song", performed by Petula Clark for A Countess from Hong Kong (1967), reached number one on the UK and other European charts.[425] Chaplin also received his only competitive Oscar for his composition work, as the Limelight theme won an Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1973 following the film's re-release.[
