I cryed at the end. Such a beautiful and fun movie. I wish i could've watched this in a big screen. Thank you Charlie Chaplin for this masterpiece.

Incomparable acting. Whenever I watch this masterpiece, it brings joy and tears simultaneously.

who else cried at the end when she realized it was him? love these movies they are so relaxing to watch. love the character Charlie Chaplin plays because he is a poor guy who acts like a classy gentleman. reminding us that you don't need to be wealthy to have high class. Its something that comes from within you. You can be high born, wealthy, travelled and educated and still have no class. True nobility comes from within.

It's such a crime that Chaplin's work isn't still revered. The music really fiddles your heart.

I really wasn't expecting such a beautiful and emotional end scene in a silent movie. He really was a movie writing genius. Fantastic movie.

Literally that scene makes me cry every single time. So beautiful. So emotional. Just truly a masterpiece of an ending. This movie is fantastic even if it does show it’s age today.

@@jacobjb Age? Maybe, but this is _the_ greatest silent film of all time, because it delibrately chose to stay silent in the sound era. The whole opening scene with the statues was lampooning the popularity of sound film, since it relied less on the art of visual story telling.

Mesmo sendo pobre, viver em condições ruins, vc pode escolher entre encher seu coração de raiva pelas humilhações sofridas, pelas injustiças da vida, pela falta de oportunidade... Ou fazer o bem, espalhar a alegria, fazer as pessoas enxergarem que a felicidade existe tbm nas coisas simples... Que o amor é o único caminho que vale a pena seguir. Foi e sempre será um gênio!

Why did this make me cry? This is my first Chaplin film and I didn’t expect the amount of emotions I would go through. Amazing.

Charles Chaplin, o maior gênio do cinema pois inovou a linguagem da "sétima arte" misturando o vaudeville ao lirismo e à mensagens sociais e políticas, isso quando o cinema ainda dava seus primeiros passos. Ele era o ator principal, o diretor, o produtor e depois, até o compositor das músicas-tema de seus filmes (já na época do som). Algumas dessas músicas ficaram famosas e são conhecidas até hoje, haja vista (e ouvida) a música-tema de Tempos Modernos: "Smile", que mais tarde ganhou letra. Chaplin, um, gênio inigualável.

Exactly. Her blindness may have been literally cured, but she couldn’t truly “see” everything until she recognized the touch of his hand.

No CGI , nothing blowing up, no steroid gobbling actors, no 3D, no violence, no sex, no self-serving 'social meanings' just absolutely perfect motion picture art. Every single time I watch this I am left breathless. Unspeakable beauty.

To say CGI is for untalented and unimaginative directors is to imply that a director like Del Toro hasn't made some of the most visually stunning and imaginative cinematic artworks ever. It is terrible when it's used excessively in action/superhero movies though, I agree on that.

No social meaning? I think you completely missed the point. A hapless but resilient tramp (Charlie Chaplin) falls in love with a blind flower girl (Virginia Cherrill) on the tough city streets. Upon learning that she and her grandmother are to be evicted from their home, the tramp undertakes a series of attempts to provide them with the money they need, all of which end in humiliating failure. But after a drunken millionaire (Harry Myers) lavishly rewards him for saving his life, the tramp can change the flower girl's life forever. I get a lot of social meaning by this description.

45 years ago today, Charlie Chaplin died aged 88. As a 26 year old I've loved this guy ever since I was 8. He made the world laugh, cry and even sing. Chaplin's movies will forever be some of the best of the 20th century or of all time. Happy Heavenly Christmas Mr Chaplin🎄🙏

I had to keep a large group of 6 to 12 year olds occupied for 30 minutes, so (with trepidation) I played them the intro statue scene, and boxing scene. I was worried they would hate something black and white. To my slight surprise, the whole group couldn't stop laughing through the entire scene. Charlie Chaplin speaks to every person in every age.

One of the best movies of history!

Charlie, the perfectionist, was a masterpiece by himself. His every scene bears manifold meaning. No gap, nothing left to make every situation immortal is left. At the same time his sense of humour is unparallel.

Nessa obra-prima do cinema nota-se que a realidade é sempre impactante. A moça cega enxergava a vida com o coração: a sua maior razão. Quando ela finalmente enxergou com os olhos, viu um homem pobre com roupas rasgadas passar na frente da sua loja. Foi com o coração que ela realmente o descobriu - tocando a sua mão. @Harry Ang3ll Same principle applies. Obviously, it wouldn't be the same experience without the music, but if the visual storytelling is present, then what Hitchcock is saying should still apply, and you could work out what is happening.

i wish i had seen more movies so that i can confidently give examples but you *can* 'show' and 'not tell' with only sound too, and to some extent even with only dialogue

Realmente, o filme é maravilhoso. As pessoas que dizem que todos os filmes em preto e branco não são bons devem rever seus conceitos. Chaplin consegue nos mostrar da maneira mais simples possível que o que realmente importa não é aquilo que possuímos, mas sim, aquilo que fazemos. É mais do que um filme: é uma lição de vida.

Just reading Charlie Chaplins autobiography,what an amazing book,and he talks for some time about City Lights,the talkies had become huge by now and no one believed silent films could be a success,but,he even composed the music himself as he knew exactly how he wanted it,he says he was a perfectionist and one of the early scenes where he buys a flower and realises the girl is blind,lasts about seventy seconds,but took five days to film.

Caro colega, obras simples e tão genial. Acabei de assistir. Confesso que derramei algumas lágrimas no final. Esse final pra mim é a mais emocionante cena do cinema que ja presenciei.

He told us without words, one of the most profound love stories. City Lights is a learning film for all filmmakers new and accomplished, to understand the importance and art of portraying human emotions. We have forgotten it and it's high time we bring back this most important cinema craft.

Nossa que nostalgia, quando eu era criança, eu não tinha nem celular e nem tablet, eu coloca na tv cultura e tbm em outros canais e passava os filmes de Charlie Chaplin, hoje vendo de novo me vem o gostinho da infância. Amo demais.

W moim kraju były dwa kanały tv. 1 i 2. Ale na 2 był słaby obraz bo śnieżyl. Na jedynce w niedziele byl ptogram pt. "W Starym Kinie". Bylo to w porze obiadowej. Pamietam ze jak przychodzilem z kościoła. Rosół stał na stole a w Tv byl Charlie Chaplin, Harold Loyd, Buster Keaton itp. Tam pokazywali arcydziela kina niemego. Najchetniej jeśli film pokazywal biedę i wyzysk pracownikow w USA. Pamietam ten film dokladnie. Najbardziej zapamiętałem scenę walki bokserskiej.

QUE MARAVILLA DE PELÍCULA DE AQUELLOS TIEMPOS

Engraçado como o Chaplin soube fazer bom uso do som. Até fez uma brincadeira com o som no começo do filme. Muitos consideram esse como o seu melhor filme. Carlitos sempre atrapalhado ajuda uma jovem cega florista a recuperar a visão e nesse mesmo tempo faz amizade com um homem que quando está embriagado fica amigo mas quando está sóbrio não o reconhece. Um clássico maravilhoso do Chaplin.

As Bruce Lee once said,to honestly express your self without lying to ones self is hard to do.I am a 57 year old black american and I can honestly and truely say that, we have had many great entertainrs like , Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Bing, Bob Hope,Prince,Michael Jackson, James brown,Clark Gable, Bogart, Mary Pickford, Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and the list goes on but, this little 5 foot 4 inch man in my opinion stands out to be the best.He has influenced many people from his time in history to the present day. Like other silent movie stars ,they are able to capture your emotions, feelings etc... with the screen but, no one in my opinion has been able to do it as good as Mr Chaplin.It is so great how you can watch a movie with no talking and come out feeling so good.When I get so tired of the world we live in today with all the negativity meaning, school shootings, everyday murder in typical U.S.A cities,Politicians fighting one another, church scandals, threats of war, I then go back to something alot slower and peaceful

Lindo, divino, maravilhoso! Um dos grandes filmes de Charlie Chaplin. Não me canso de ver, rir e me emocionar.

Isto sim era uma obra-prima..

1:25:48. Oh Charlie, you wicked man. One of the best scenes in cinematography. Simply brilliant.

I've never been a big Chaplin fan, I usually glossed over what he did because I prefer dialogue driven movies. I happened to come across City Lights when I recently saw it on a list of 'The 50 most romantic movies of all time". So I had a look at it here....and boy was I wrong in dismissing his work so readily. Now after all these years I've discovered what all the fuss was about, and what a genius the guy was. Better late than never I suppose, and I think I've got a bit of catching up to do. A big shout of thanks to whoever uploaded this movie. It's because of them that I got to see a classic.

This is the only Charlie Chaplin movie I've seen but after finally seeing it I will definitely be watching more. It's fascinating to me that you can be emotionally riveted by something without hearing a single word. Pure cinema is a dying art.

A great gem from a very talented actor who can make you cry and laugh at the same time, just like many other films recorded during his career. I just don't find any words to describe this film. A truly piece of art.
