I remember my mother loved Charlie Chaplin. It never occurred to me, after he showed up in my feed for whatever reason, that I could see all his work on KZread, and couldn't stop watching. I was visiting my father, who is 90 years old, and has alzheimers, and asked if he remembered Charlie Chaplin. He said no. So I quickly brought up a picture of him on my phone and showed him. For me, the look on his face was priceless. He said, "Oh yeah!", with a smile and the look of someone remembering an old friend. Now I love Chaplin even more.

He was the greatest. Every time I'm sad, I watch one of his movies and I'm instantly smiling. That was his gift to the world. That's also why I have his silhouette tattooed on my arm with the quote "Nothing is permanent in this wicked world, not even our troubles." -Charlie Chaplin Every time I look at it I feel better about my life.

I love the blooper at 1:02. I find it really hilarious for some reason to so Chaplin so angry at a ruined gag. Mark of a true perfectionist.

PointingMonkey actually, is not that surprising. I read his biography and he was known for being too perfectionist. He could make the same scene over and over again until he would like it.

Cami DF Yeah, I've heard he was a perfectionist before. But to see such an outburst from a man I've always thought of as having a very calm personality was what was shocking. It makes me feel better when I throw a tantrum when something I'm doing doesn't go right though. :-)

He's so cute! I love him. Adorable, adorable, adorable. That part when he jumped into the lady's arms! Lol!

I had such a shameful (but not ashamed to admit it now!) crush on him as a kid. I would go to the library and secretly rent the vhs tapes of whatever movies they had of his. One time a couple of my friends were there and saw me standing in line with a whole mess of them (no self service checkouts yet). I was so embarrassed; pretended that I was getting 'em for moms lol. I STILL get the same giddy feeling whenever I see him :') It never went away.

Yes, bloopers and outtakes from the silent era are extremely rare. Chaplin had the good sense to preserve some of his stuff (particularly his films) in his archives. Most of this type of stuff was destroyed, but this footage was found a little over 20 years ago by some film historians who visited the Chaplin estate in Switzerland and discovered these outtakes. So far, these are the only ones that have been found or released to the public.

Its kind nice to just see Charlie laugh....not gimmick involved literally just Charlie laughing....

Charlie got angry during the revolving door because if you watch Unknown Chaplin it explains that he attempted to do the gag several times and during the blooper featured in the video he almost got it right but his cane got stuck in the door.

this is heartwarming! :) I was named after his last wife, and finding these clips made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside

True, but all of the slapstick was carefully staged before hand. It's choreographed like in a dance. Chaplin started in vaudeville. It was all heavily rehearsed in advance. The reason was to be able to do the same stunt for two or three shows a day. It also protected the performer from injury. Stunt men train to fall and do other stunts with ease and do so without injury. So did Chaplin. I read a biography about him that went into it in detail. Chaplin was amazing because he worked extremely long hours. He even demanded the same from his actors and crew. He was known to work his leading ladies to the point of physical and emotional exhaustion. Today we can be grateful for his great art. So, rejoice in his comedy. Comedy heals people when they are sad and heart broken. It truly is great medicine.

Even though I am 14 and I watch a lot of action talkie movies ... In colour.. Charlie Chaplin is still one of my favourite actors... I love watching his movies

This is wonderful!! He is usually so perfect that you forget he's human and makes mistakes. It also gives you an idea of how many takes of these routines he must have done. Yeah, that first fall looks like it really hurt, and Chaplin seems like he'd only explode if he's the one that made the mistake. He'd never blow up at others. A genius and remarkable human being.

Edna was my first childhood crush ❤️, even though I grew up 40 years after she passed away. Such a beautiful lady.

These outtakes are from Charlie Chaplin's Mutual period, 1916 - 1917, and Chaplin has stated that this fertile period [however brief] was among the happiest periods of his life. Chaplin may have kept these outtakes because the Mutuals were so important personally and professionally to him. They show the real beginning of his development as an artist and one of the geniuses of cinema. This clip includes outtakes that I can recognize from "The Cure," "One A.M.," "The Pawnshop," "Behind The Screen," "The Count," and "The Adventurer." The pressure of fulfilling the Mutual contract--given the short time frame--must have been enormous. Chaplin wrote that during the making of these films that he'd often struggle with developing an idea or working out a gag, but that somehow, almost miraculously, the solution would come to him. In spite of the pace, you can see in these outtakes that Chaplin also had great fun making them. You can also see the wonderful camaraderie that Chaplin had with his fellow actors, including Edna Purviance, Eric Campbell, Albert Austin, Henry Bergman, and others. The 12 two-reelers from Chaplin's Mutual period have been preserved with painstaking state-of-the-art care in the "90th Anniversary Edition - The Chaplin Mutual Comedies," by Image Entertainment, thanks to David H. Shepard.

I don’t think it was a distinct blooper reel originally, someone’s picked out the genuine bloopers from huge quantities of material he didn’t use in the finished product. (check out “Unknown Chaplin” documentary for the full story)

The fact he was in charge of everything in his films and had his own, very profitable studio, plus did many takes and took a long time with editing probably increased the likelihood of unused film surviving. It wasn't thrown away because he didn't throw it away.

Chaplin was a genius and one of my faves. His movies are the best, his gentleness and easy laugh and quick smile were the mark of a true man. The quality on these bloopers is magnificent. Thank you for posting these.. didn't know they existed...lots of bloopers were not kept in the olden days even on TV..love these~ It's like uncovering King Tut's tomb of treasures...now if we could only find some of the lost Lon Chaney Sr movies! Also another man with a wonderful smile and incredibly fluid hands..his parents were both deaf mutes I believe so he had that grace which many an actor can only dream.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. Despite his reputation as a difficult director to work for, he did know how to have fun. I think there certainly was a balance between his antics and his frustrated outbursts. You can tell in a few of these takes that he was not having very much fun...nevertheless, it is a fascinating glimpse into his world of filmmaking. I wish there were more from his independent filmmaking period when he made all of his more famous features.

68anu not very fantastic human being. He got mad when his girlfriend decided against an abortion. He was known to say to her : "Are you trying to populate Los Angeles?" He espoused communism yet he died a multimillionaire.

Watching this I noticed that, we have lost the way. Now in days, comedians need to be vulgar to make us laugh. Why!? At least most of them.

Chaplin has such a nice and kind smile. I love his film and his figure the tramp. I love the 20s humor films. I love Laurel&Hardy too.

I just can't get myself to realize that this man has passed on, whenever I watch his movies or see how many people love him even to this day, he is very much alive!

What a tremendous comedian...what a gifted and talented man...I'm a huge huge huge fan of his movies.

I love this so much. There's just something so great about seeing him crack up. I think we have those great classic stars immortalized to the point where they don't seem human anymore. Seeing Charlie Chaplin laugh and joke around reminds us that he was a regular person (and an incredibly funny actor with a fantastic smile).

I love his sudden laugh! We don't see it much in the movies .... at least not an authentic laugh. But this is really sweet .... thanks so much!

I watch these blooper reels and modern ones from time to time to remind me how we haven't changed all that much.

She was lovely! Her being barely aknowledged is what bugs me the most about the 1992 biopic, these two made a great team and Chaplin was appreciative of her all his life!
