Being an Indian I hear a lot of Indian scales but she really did so well with the Indian part. I rarely hear English music so I can't judge that part but the Indian bit was great.

Reason why singers may say they are from South India specifically and not India in general is most likely because of the difference in traditional music styles of both places. Carnatic music style is more prevalent in the South of India while Hindustani is the style most prevalent in other parts of India. What ever direction people may speak of, South, North-east or whatever, all are Indian and proud of that.
