I have seen a lot of people play Jesus, but Robert Powell is the best I ever saw. He was absolutely awesome in Jesus of Nazareth. I think he made Jesus proud.

Authentic depiction of Jesus dear Robert. I do believe Jesus of Nazareth, the movie, was planned and orchestrated by God himself. No actor has even come slightly close to your brilliant portrayal of Christ's mannerisms and temperaments. Well done!

I started watching Jesus of Nazareth as a kid. I’m 44 and I cannot watch any other movie about Jesus. I actually saw it today Good Friday. It still has the same effect on me, I love Mr. Powell. By the way, it has absolutely nothing to do with Mr. Powell’s ethnicity. I believe that he’s a great actor and he did an amazing job at this portrayal.

Unless you are talking about Jim Caviezel's portrayal where he played Jesus speaking Aramaic, aren't all "accents" inaccurate? Not taking you to task mind you. And I agree; Powell is fantastic and his portrayal and Caviezel's are my two favorites!

Fu fatto come sceneggiato televisivo , anche se aveva un cast di attori stellari da kolossal, se invece fosse stato un film da cinema ,di sicuro avrebbe vinto piu di un oscar a cominciare proprio dalla straordinaria interpretazione di questo attore , cioe il miglior gesu di tutti i tempi resta sempre lui .

I watched Robert Powell in Jesus of Nazareth aged 12 when it was first aired on TV . He was my first crush 😍 those eyes and his portrayal of Jesus has stuck with me .I watch it quite a lot and although I'm 57 now it still touches me and brings me to tears. He is my version of Jesus Christ and always will be.

This man did for Jesus of Nazareth what Vivien Leigh did for Scarlett O'Hara - played it so convincingly and with such consummate skill that it's impossible to imagine anyone else in the role. Amazing actor.

It was the role of a lifetime for Powell and he was so convincing and believable! I think he also must have done much to promote the Gospel throughout the world due to his fine acting. Similarly, Alistair Sim playing Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol". No other actor is worth watching in that role for me.

I’m an Orthodox Christian and our churches are adorned with icons of our Lord and His Mother and His Saints. Even today, when I look at Him in the icons, the resemblance is uncanny!! His portrayal of our Lord was breathtaking!!

Jesus of Nazareth is my favorite religious movie. Powell is so believable as Jesus. He said that he never blinked while playing Jesus bc the director wanted Jesus to seem like someone not of this world. You'll notice that he never blinks.

Whatever else Robert does he will always be remembered for bringing Jesus to life again in a way that was, and still is, so believable. Mr. Powell is a great actor. He wont play a part unless he believes in it. Or has deep connection to it. He was young at the time....but open to different experiences. If you listen to this interview and interviews now that you can find on KZread...he basically has not changed. He is very serious about all parts he plays. He is a serious actor. It's not about glamour to him. How refreshing. It's about the craft that he loves. Lucky him. He is also the voice of many documentaries...etc. A great ambassador to what an actor should be.

Apparently David Hemmings suggested him for the role of Gregory Wolf in Harlequin,which I have always loved.But like many people my first Robert Powell experience was seeing his as Jesus Of Nazareth in Bollin Cross School in the late 7Os.I also believe he narrated an audiobook version of Dracula for the BBC.I would love to hear this.

@@mrv1271 Yes, Franco Zeffirelli was the perfect Director for this drama series. I agree. I still believe a lot of the success of theatre hangs on the talents and skillsets of the Actors. The Director can be the best, but it is the talented Actors that bring the realistic characters to life and make the film believable. I cannot even imagine Jesus of Nazareth without Robert Powell. I view this brilliant series at least 2-3 times per year. It truly brings me closer to Christ. Happy viewing. 🌹

Absolutely one of the most brilliant acting performances ever.

Robert had the perfect voice for the part of Jesus and his eyes were so expressive they conveyed the holiness within him of God so well...a moving film and my favourite portrayal of Jesus...youre a star in many ways especially in that film.

What an outstanding voice!

This interview really highlights how much work Robert poured into the role, because his natural mannerisms and manner of speech are markedly different from the ones he adopted as Jesus. He didn't just read from a script, he carefully adjusted everything about himself, right down to the tiniest detail. The interview being so near to the time of filming makes the comparison easy.

Wow! You are spot on about Bowie. It's always nagged at me trying to think of who a young Robert Powell reminds me of. his mannerisms, facial expression and cadence in his voice do very much remind me of Bowie.

This movie changed my life spiritually in so many ways...listening to him now is relaxing and draws me in still just listening to him speak

He narrates a few WWII documentaries that I regularly watch. His voice is so smooth and comforting.

One of the best films of Jesus' life hands down. I watch it every year, and every year I am moved by it. He nailed it!!

I agree. Powell certainly threw himself into this role. I understand he fasted for two weeks prior to its filming.

Brilliant as Jesus ..... absolutely brilliant.

Robert is a family friend ive known he and his wife babs since I was a young boy..such a lovely man.. his vision of jesus is exemplary.

Robert had a respectful relationship with Mr Zefferrelli ... on the set of Jesus of Nazareth I know it was strained to an extent due to the directors notoriously perfectionist outlook. I know that Robert was close friends with Ian Mcshane. Who plays judas ..I believe that he was easy to get on with in general and everyone liked him

What a wonderful and remarkable man..no one has ever played the crucifixion of Jesus like you, I believe that playing that role has changed so many lives, watching you act can cause a person to feel being newborn again, Thanks..and maintain. That voice and those beautiful eyes🙏

I’m so glad to hear his views changed to become a firm believer. I was so sad when I listened to this interview to hear him sound like he wasn’t.

Seen several Jesus films. Many good actors but Robert Powell to my eyes seemed much more able to project a spiritual soul that must have been present in the actual person

Any Special Enough person to portray The Christ Must Definitely Be BLESSED. ABSOLUTELY & UNDOUBTEDLY.

The best thing about him is his humility. He isn’t there all pompous saying he played Jesus, and it showed in his acting. That is what made it so believable. He was a quiet, humble servant.

He's an example on how hair can make such a huge difference!

I don't know about that but Hollywood came knocking on his door but Robert Powell backed off. He's really anti-Hollywood. That's why he acted in his own native country in England. So, I respect the man's privacy after he played the role of Christ.

As a matter of fact, not too long ago, I don't remember when this Happened, Powell got furious because since his performance as Christ created a phenomena, on T-shirts, paintings and people are warped thinking he is Jesus. He made it plain. "I'm not Jesus Christ! I'm just an actor.". So, again I respect the man's privacy and he's doing well and still acting in England.

It was a television miniseries, so it would not have been eligible for the Academy Awards. Maybe for the TV awards.

I loved that movie, even agree watching it every year for many years! I saw him last year doing a documentary on Israel and the places Jesus went. It was very interesting!

Not only did he believe in Jesus, he also has his humble qualities. Definitely the right person for the part!!

What's really strange is that growing up Catholic, I saw paintings, images, plays and movies depicting Christ. But when I saw this movie, at the age of 10, the adult Jesus in the movie of Jesus of Nazareth resonated in my soul. It's difficult to explain but it's as if my soul said this representation of Jesus, this actors features, were that of Jesus. No other image, but his, comes to mind when I think of our Lord.

What a voice!

Watching this movie at age 10 changed my life.

The best actor I've seen since the greats. He puts it so well about his films and how he came to play Jesus.

His voice is amazing, given to him by the God he played. Christ is King.

What a lovely man. He looks so 70s with his kind of afro hair, haha, I love it. Totally different from when he played Jesus. I found it really adorable when he kind of covered his face in embarrassment when the interviewer asked the questions about his female audience. Also, yes, a stunning voice.

A versatile actor, indeed, though his career was not as grandiose as one might have expected. The fact, that R. Powell played, a private detective (S. Holmes), a composer (G. Mahler) and of course the main role in the masterpiece "Jesus of Nazareth", is undoubtedly, amazing.

That film changed my heart forever

His eyes still "move" me .... almost frighten me. It's the only Jesus film I can watch.

I still love this series! Remember when it was first released. Last year I watched a new series about Jesus and the apostles called The Chosen! It is wonderful!

Jesus Christ is the most difficult role for an actor to play. I think of all the portrayals of Jesus his interpretation came to the most perfect one I had seen, and my favorite one.

I'm 47 and I saw Jesus of Nazareth like almost every year at Easter when I was very young. I remember once when I was 12 or 13, I was watching it again and I cried my eyes out, and prayed that I love you Jesus and I didn't want to go to hell. There was never a time I ever disbelieved God but I feel like that particular moment was a pivotal one in my life, and no other film moved me in that way, except Gibson's Passion of the Christ.

Years ago when I was a little girl in the 60's I thought no one else could do a better job in protraying Jesus then Jeffrey Hunter. In 1977 I saw a performance of Jesus that for my part is The Best Performance of Christ. That of course is Mr. Powell's interpretation of my Eternal God, Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is without question how most everyone feels Jesus would be like if you're blessed to stand in his physical presence.

As a Christian woman, I'm surprised he said that, I mean, he portrayed Jesus, how could he NOT believe Jesus died for our sins, then risen 3 days later, so we may have everlasting life in heaven if we are saved by grace thru faith, believing Jesus is the son of God! I pray for Roberts salvation & for all who are not saved by the blood of Jesus Christ. For the wages of sin is death, meaning eternity in Hell

Judging from his response in this interview he does not believe in Jesus. He believes in the man but is unsure of his deity. That seals it right there. Hopefully things have changed since this interview he has found the truth.
