For sure. I went to M @ PSU in 2001. It was strange because it was the first football game after 9/11. It was a late afternoon game and they had Sandusky in the basketball arena singing his new book "Touched". Creepy MFers in that part of Pennsylvania.

Andrew Fisher I don't know, man. I put him on a list of Elite 3 in Michigan football history. Tom Harmon, though never played in the NFL, flew P-38 lightnings in WWII 3 years after being the one and only player in Michigan history to get a standing ovation from Ohio State fans after his amazing 40-0 victory over Ohio State, scoring three rushing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns, four extra points, intercepting three passes, and punting three times for an average of 50 yards. And then there is a guy that Matthew Vader may have heard of, a guy by the name of Ron Kramer who only earned 9 varsity letters in football, basketball and track. Bennie Oosterbaan also deserves consideration, Sports Illustrated only ranks him as the fourth greatest athlete in the state of Michigan, not just the University.

+boombampvp No, Harmon would not be ,quote unquote "demolished in today's game" . Not only was he a fairly decent sizeed bruising rb but he had world class sprinters speed in the 100. 10 flat or less! He was also versatile , he could catch, run, pass, punt and ,yes, kick fgs ! In today's college game Harmon would still be first team all American, all Big Ten, and a Heisman winner, he is an all time legend for a reason. The greatest sportswriter of the day actually declared that Harmon was better than another immortal Red Grange of Illinois who has been voted the greatest football player of all time! Harmon was injured several times as a war hero and so was unable to be great in the NFL but he was a first pick of the first round before ww2 intervened. Most experts agree that, like Bo Jackson, had he not sustained the injuries he would have dominated in the NFL, OLD 98 was that great. On Michigan football history...Harmon is number 1, then Woodson, and then the #1 all time scorer in college history for TDs scored, rb Willie Heston, who was both tough ,and speedy. The NCAA does not list this all American as the all time leader in T D's only because it did not exist at the time .He had a career total of over 77 TDs! #4 was All American qb Bob Chappius who led UM to the 1947 national championship and conference title and Rose bowl victory Some call the legendary coach Crisler' s Mad Magicians UM football team the greatest in college history relative to era. The UM scholar warriors led by Chappius who got robbed out of winning the Heisman- fact- ran the most intricate ,sophisticated, cerebral array of offensive plays in college history. Fifth on the UM list would be three time All American fleet wide receiver Anthony Carter, arguably the greatest wr in college history.AC still holds the all time NCAA record for most yards per touch of the football at any position! He was that dangerous and fast. Two time All American tight end Ron Kramer is 6 th on the list and at #7 would be Lamar Woodley a dominating defensive player and national award winner. #8 is 3 time All American wr Benny Oosterbaan. #9 on the all time list for UM then 2 time All American and the first great NFL passing QB Benny Friedman who starred in both the college and the NFL and is both Halls of Fame! Finally, #10 on the all time list is Denard Shoelace Robinson, a first team all American His sophomore year who should have won the Heisman. With blinding speed and moves Shoelace is the all time national career QB rushing leader! Honorable mentions to: Neal Snow, Harry Neumann, Desmond magic Howard, Dennis Franklin, Dave Brown, Reggie Mackenzie, Thom Darden, Mike Kenn, Tom Mack, Dan Dierdorf, Jake Long, Braylon Edwards, Mike Hart, Forest Evashevski, Tyrone Wheatley.

+linkbrent421 I have Tom Harmon at #2. And it's a close second. The fact that Charles won a Heisman trophy as a primarily defensive player has me sold that he is #1. I'd probably put Kramer at #3.

Charles Woodson is the greatest defensive back in NFL history! He has the most TDs returned off turnovers in NFL history, is in the top ten all time in interceptions, is unequalled in hitting opposing players for no gain or lost yardage. He is the most physical db in history with the only possible exception being dick night train Lane. He won an NFL mvp award and has a super bowl ring and 2 NFL championship game appearances. In college be was the first and still only defensive player to win the Heisman trophy. In college he was the most single season nationally and regionally decorated defensive player in college history. Case closed.

Charles Woodson is the greatest defensive back in history. He was great in coverage, tackling, he got sacks. He played all positions on the field. Even at times linebacker. Both safety positions. Inside and outside corner. Whoever said if you get interceptions you can't be good that is stupid. Sherman is one of the least targeted corners and gets a ton of interceptions. Woodson has 20 sacks in his career. Deion has 1. Woodson has twice as many tackles. Is there another player in history that has 1000 tackles, 60 ints, 20 sacks, and 40 force fumbles. Woodson could reach all that by the end of the year. Best Defensive Back ever. What is scary I think he would have been a better safety than he was corner.

Woodson excelled at finding the ball. Most defenders watch hands and then attack the hands because otherwise you can lose the receiver if you try to find the ball. You can watch Woodson find the ball a lot of times while it’s at its apex in the air. Very risky but he did it so well.

As for Peyton Manning, and the University of Tennessee. Their athletic department did a luke warm marketing campaign for the Heisman campaign before the regular season began, it was their choice as in those days it orchestrated Heisman marketing plans had been done in the past few times by other universities. They thought Manning's press conference announcing his decision to return for his senior season was a great way to start off the 1997 and keep the spotlight for the rest of the year. They probably also thought they had the voters in their region to themselves automatically. One stumble, Manning again lost to Florida 20-33 but still ended up winning the SEC in a 1 point win in the SEC championship game versus Auburn. By late November Tennessee realized Woodson had a lot of media exposure and highlight reel plays and commanded a lot of votes on his side. Manning did not beat Florida in 4 years and it really hurt his chance for the Heisman.

I like to think I was the first to say he should win the Heisman. The 1996 stadium cups celebrated the 2 winners Harmon and Desmond and mentioned how # 98 scored touchdowns, kicked extra points, intercepted passes... After he started playing both ways that same year as a sophomore, I figured that a dominant player on both sides with two more years of eligibility remaining had to be the best player in the country.

The one handed pick at Michigan State and the punt return vs Ohio State are the two plays I think that won him the Heisman
