Charles Spencer, Di's brother, is minding his manor

The Spencer family estate, Althorp, is 13,000 acres of English farmland and forest spread roughly the size of Manhattan. Tracy Smith takes a tour of the estate's house, now 506 years old, with Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, who talks about his sister, the late Princess Diana, and about his family's traditions.

She exuded class and aristocratic upbringing in all her mannerisms and actions, her soft and cultured speach, her elegant dressing sense, her graceful style, her stately walk and most of all her graciousness in her interactions with everyone be they the heads of state, celebrities, or the members of the general millieu who flocked to meet her, greet her shower their love and loyalty on her or the sick and the downtrodden or those ostracised by society. None of the royals except the QUEEN has ever been a shine above her. Yes she became jealous but did no harm; yes she became vindictive with Charles, but which devoted doting wife would not when treated as callously as Charles did; but that was only human. Yet she never stopped to being petty or mean with all others. Probably Meghan's despicable behaviour in dragging the royal family's name in mud should make all the royals, and specially Charles realise what a gem he has lost.

@@tylerwest2449 That is true, but one interesting fact is, Electress Sophia of Hanover was not the seniormost descendant of Charles I.. That would be in the person of Lady Federica Schomberg, the Countess of Mertola but she passed over for Sophia of Hanover for some reason.. Also, Countess Federica just happens to be the great, great, great, great, great, great grandmother of the late Diana, Princess of Wales..

The Spencers are not really more "royal" thab the Windsors who are agmatic descendants of the House of Wettin from the Ernestine Saxe-Coburg and Gotha branch BUT rather, one can say that they are MORE ENGLISH.. Also, many fail to realize that the Spencers are the heirs body to the once sovereign Prince of Mindelheim who held a seat and vote in the Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire.. This would make them technically a Mediatised Princely Family such as the Princes of Thurn and Taxis, Furstenburg, Leiningen, Hohenlohe-Lagenburg, and Liechtenstein - making them equal to royalty.. The issue is, the Holy Roman Empire follows the strict salic law, and thus the imperial titles cannot be passed on or through the female line, and so Princess Anne of Mindelheim cannot pass her rights to her sons Charles, 4th Duke of Marlborough and John - father of the 1st Earl Spencer..

What a lovely interview. It's too bad that Earl Spencer is such a despicable human being. I hope the people praising him in these comments will take a moment to research him a little so they can find what an abusive husband he was to his first wife and how to nearly destroyed his first wife with his cruelty - much worse than ANYTHING Charles even thought about doing to Diana! Let's get the facts straight - Prince Charles is a selfish creature, but he's not cruel. Also look at how the ungrateful Spencer children treated their stepmother, Raine. They criticized her publicly and accused her of selling off their inheritance. What she actually did was do everything she could to SAVE Althorp, which was badly in need of serious repair. If it had not been for her efforts, the house would be falling down around them. And how did they treat her as a new widow when the elder Earl Spencer died? They literally bunched up her possessions into black plastic garbage bags and threw them out of the house. Diana even bragged how she pushed Raine down the stairs once! (She later became friends with Raine.) What did Charles Spencer do when her inherited? The same thing Raine had done - sell off family treasures in order to keep the house running. And of course, he refused to allow Diana to live on the property when she needed a place to call home. He had no problem, however, in cashing in on Diana's death by having her buried on that lonely island and charging a fee to allow people onto the property to stare at it from across the water. I hope he has changed his ways and has gained some maturity and decency, but, the deeds of his past follow him and cannot be undone.

The version I know was that her brother offered her space in a small house on the estate, then rescinded the invitation a bit later. Diana was so let down and hurt by this, causing a rift so bad, she didn't speak with Charles for some time. It does seem whenever she needed help, only those with ulterior motives provided actual assistance, expecting something in return for their "kindness".
