@@josephs3169, this is a very realistic scenario. I worked in group homes in Ontario, Canada that services children and youth with developmental disabilities and mental health issues. One little boy, about 6, had become a crown ward (ward of the state), during his parents divorce. The mother wanted nothing to do with the child and the father couldn't care for the child - either could afford to pay what it cost to keep the child in care (it was $250/day at the time). So, when they "refused" to take the child back, the Children's Aid was brought in and declared that they abandoned their child - allowing the child to continue in the group home. This happened to many children with Autism since the Harris Government in Ontario, decided to save money they wouldn't cover long-term care in group homes for children anymore. The only way to get the care covered was to either have the parents pay outright or for the child to become a crown ward. It can still happen today.

I just looked it up. This does happen. Parents who are really desperate relinquish their kids to the state when they can’t afford to pay for the cost of mental health treatment. That is so messed up that it feels like it can’t be happening.

I healthcare is “free”, that’s just a common misconception! Places like where I live (Australia) have universal health cover, meaning we can receive treatment without “paying”, but our taxes pay for it.

@Jayne Eyre a lot of parents allow their child to dress as their preferred gender before they start any medical treatment. If the child is happy and outright says they want to be that gender, then the parents can bring them to a psychiatrist who will diagnose them with gender dysphoria. They'll get psychological help to deal with their dysphoria until they are an adolescent and then, and only then, they can begin sex blockers, which is a completely reversible process, they'll just start puberty a little late if they decide they dont want to continue. If they decide to come off hormone replacement, some effects are irreversible, but they're not life threatening, for example, if a girl took testosterone as they felt they were a boy, their voice deepens, bone shape changes and sometimes hair loss can occur, which are irreversible, but not major effects on the person. They know exactly what they're signing up for as they have to sign a consent form first which states everything that will happen to them during the treatment and what effects may be irreversible should they stop taking the treatment. Their parents also sign this form. No one likes a transphobe sweetie xo

This brought a few tears to my eyes. No should have to make a tough decision like this over insurance issues. Everyone should be given good insurance to manage their healthcare and the healthcare of their loved ones.

Reality is its not that black and white, Im not gonna say the system is perfect because its not, but its still one of the best if not the best, none of them are a magic bullet and medicine as a thing is expensive and it has to be covered some how, and the reality is that under any other system what this would have done is force them to wait throough loads of red tape or some other form of beauracratic issues, this is the reality of living in a flawed world. Should it happen no, but it does and unfortunetly finding the solution is no easy thing either

Rob Richard one of the best? Hilarious, the american system has FAR more bureaucracy than any other system, the only difference is that it is private, so the main goal of your insurance is to make money off you, not cover you. It is the worst system out of the developed nations.

@@robrichard2907 your system is terrible 🤣 you made medicine a business and now you have to deal with inflated costs and your system isn't actually accessible to most of your citizens. 'American dream' unless you're born with a pre-existing condition, suffer an injury, develop a long term illness, have a sudden serious illness, or have anyone in your family with any of the above. I have diabetes, and in my country I don't pay a dime, in your country I'd have to choose between insulin and food, insulin and rent, insulin and school, insulin and other bills. In your country I wouldn't be able to go to school at all and I'd probably end up like the poor people that try and ration their insulin, some people that die because they can't afford it.

And this is why the Australian health care system is amazing

As a parent myself I can not even begin to imagine how hard of a decision this must have been

Just for those who are wondering, the kid is also adopted. I have no idea how hard it is going to be for the parents to get there kid back after this too.

This is a tv show but the actors who had a role in this episode did a fantastic job, especially the actors who played Jamie’s parents. The heartbreak was clearly visible

For someone who is adopted and didn't even know his parents, this breaks my heart. I can relate to what he is going through

You can tell that despite not being related to the child, they love him as though he were their own.

Well that didn't just rip my heart out and stomp on it. Good heavens I'm sobbing. Like someone said in the previous video, the real villains here are the insurance companies and even perhaps the state. If the only way once can provide treatment to a child is by having the parents abandon him..my God. A VERY broken system.

As a mom, hearing that boy begging to go home broke my heart!

Those are good parents. Maybe don't leave while the kid is sobbing though

This reminds me of the New Amsterdam episode where parents had to get divorced to get their child healthcare

I take it you didn’t watch the episode. They both private and Medicaid insurance but they won’t pay for the cost of the residential facility he needed. The kid couldn’t stay with parents because they have other son to look after. In order for Medicaid to pay for his treatment they have to leave him as a ward of the state

@@Whitneypyant wrong episode. The one he is referring to is totally different and the mother and father didn't leave the child they had to get divorce so mom could apply for Medicaid. He's not talking about this episode.

It is heartbreaking and outrageous that these love parents had to abandoned their son who has serious mental health issues so he can the help he desperately needs because the insurance company won't pay for it and I love Chicago Med because it is such an emotional and intense show and I love Dr Daniel Charles played by Oliver Platt, he is the best doctor on the series because of his kindness, compassion and he always put his patients first too and the episode is called Pain is For the Living episode 13 of season 5 and originally aired on NBC on February 5, 2020.

so glad I dont live in America. The sad thing is our govt in Australia want to take away our free healthcare too. So many people suffer needlessly when they cant get the help they need just because they do not have enough money

This is the first time in years that we FINALLY got tons of money back in our tax refunds that obama stole for many years!!! The thing is, when Jamie finds out they so called "surrendered" him to the hospital he will probably take it as his parents abandoned him. And I don't think he would trust his parents at all and resent them, he will probably develop trust issues and his anger issues might get worse. Jamie is so young that he wouldn't understand that the parents really had no other option. And question it for a longggg time. ( I am just sharing my opinion on what I think would happen to Jamie sooo don't misunderstand)

I wish they did update episodes sometimes for the stories like this. Like I'd love to see a story on Jamie being reconnected with his family.

This hurts. It hit me in the feels for real. He was abandoned by his parents and he’s being Abandoned again. I can’t imagine how that feels. I know the parents had yo give him up in order to help him but still. To him, he’s being Abandoned all over again. First my his real parents and now by his foster who truly love him and want whats’s best for him. The parents made the right call. Had the kid kept living with them, he would’ve used something more dangerous than his fists. Love hurts, but it’s Because it hurts you know its true

There is a saying "If you love someone, let them go" which I´d say fits in this situation. They admit that they can´t help their son and even so they have to surrender him they do it so he can get the help he needs.

Tough love is very hard to do. Tough love is the deepest of unselfish love

This might be the first time I've ever seen a US TV series adress the fact that there is no universal public healthcare system over there, mentioning medicaid and insurances. Other TV shows appear to happen in a different reality in which no patient has any kind of money or insurance coverage problem

I’m watching this, the parents may have had done what was best for there son no matter how hard it was, but I’m thinking about the kid and I can’t imagine him ever forgiving his parents for that even if it was the only way? They may have in a sense saved him but also lose him in an entirely different way and that’s sad 😢

@@kathconserv Yes it does... My mom and I struggle with anything involving insurance. Whether it's meds to keep us alive, or just seeing a councler. American health care system/insurance doesn't really exist for us.

This made me cry.

God this must be so so hard for them. These poor parents. The father looks so heartbroken, like he doesn't want this but he knows he can't cry if he wants to convince his wife to do it.

Wrong. The government is decided by the people. problem is the people's vote is manipulated by lobbyists. The us could start voting on social reforms and this problem would become smaller. In Europe healthcare problems like this don't exist. Vote Bernie or you will put monetary value on your existence.

This is how our country treat people in need. What has this country become. It's important now more than ever to show the rest of the world that we are not our government. Our country is its people. We need to be better that our government.

I cried. But it's the truth in many countries. Health Insurance is for you to be able to pay future medical bills. If they itself aren't helping during times of need, then honestly they are hurting people who have to take drastic actions in order to get money for treatment of their loved ones. I have also heard cases of suicide and child abandonment.

So this was the ending of the brother who attacked his brother. These were awesome parents who adopted both kids and it’s sad that that was their final option

I watched a documentary about a little boy who had severe mental illness. He was admitted to a facility that helps and caters to the childs needs, he was doing well. Until health insurance couldnt cover it anymore. The parents were put in the same position, surrender your child to get the care he needs or take him home while hes denied the care. I think about that little kid almost every day. It really broke my heart and soul, it was a very real wake up call about how awful health insurance companies and the health care system in north america can be.

I watched one years ago on how kids were being sent to a mental health facility even when they didn't need to be, and ones that did need help were sent home after 8 days. The facility was owned by an insurance company and they were using the system to generate money. They were shut down but only after many families were effected and complained.

When you let it get this far and they need this type of professional help because of that - it's the only right thing to do. Hopefully they do better with the other boy and also remember that he has to heal and that he's the victim.

They can’t. When I went through training for foster care, they told us that a kid was abandoned that same way. The trainers said that the parents were put in a system and would never be able to have a child in their custody again. I don’t think Child protection services cares about the nuances about why a child is abandoned.

If his parents relinquish him to the state he becomes a ward of the state, and the state pays for his expenses. How will they be a family again and reunited if they have no legal rights to him? What a horrible choice 😭

I feel like they could do empathy tests with these. Like how long does it to have an uncontrolled physical reaction (crying) about people who you have no knowledge of or information about prior. Well, for me... obviously no more than 3mins.

Because breaking down in tears would not help him in any way. He saw an option - a painful one, definitely, but better be separated from his child with a chance of having him back again someday, rather than lose him completely.

What I can't understand is the fact that the parents don't comfort him, tell him the truth, tell him it's just for a little while, that they'll be in touch regardless and that they still love him and have faith in his recovery and his good side and that they're proud of him going to the clinic to get better... It's always a choice of words... The fact that they have to do this is bad enough but that they don't hug and kiss him and tell him that he's loved and will be cared for, that everything will gonna be fine, that they'll be by his side no matter what... That after he gets the treatment he deserves he can come home, that it'll help him and them... God I'm so glad to live here, not at the US... That they didn't talk to Jamie properly, like he deserves- I will never ever understand.
