I’m 25 now and Charles was my next door neighbor throughout my entire childhood up until he died. I live in the projects so it’s not the easiest to navigate through life as a young black man in that environment, but Charles always gave me kind words of advice and the occasional spare change to get some snacks in the summer. He always praised me for keeping on the straight and narrow path. He loved his Parrot, he loved his mother (clearly!) and he loved people. Most of the times I saw him he was on his way to his mothers house to comfort/ care for her. She was all he had, and vice versa. He didn’t have much materially and he was struggling with loneliness towards the end of his own life. I wish I had the awareness 7 years ago to actually speak to and console/comfort Charles in his hard times. I just want people to see the side of Charles that I got an opportunity to see. The emotion and pain in his voice is real and it’s from his experiences he had to endure in his short, hard life. Im glad I stumbled upon this video, Rest In Peace Charles, you were a great example of a good man and I will always remember you.

The night my mom died I gave her a new blanket, draped it over her. She woke up a little surprised and she said thank you when I explained it. That morning she wasn’t with me. Startling her with a gift the night she died will be the most haunting and bittersweet moment I’ll ever have.

My mother is dying of stage 4 lung cancer right now. She has maybe a few days. This helps. Charles Bradley was a true conduit for soul. When people start clapping at the end, he snaps out of it....the spell is broken, he opens his eyes and returns to the "real" world. Anyone who's visited that world, even briefly, is lucky to have experienced something most people will never know.

This song hits so hard during a divorce. I consider myself a widow because my husband didn't actually die but lost himself to meth. I look back constantly and ask myself if there was anything I could have personally don't to keep it from happening. People love to say "it's not your fault" but when you're someone's rock and whole life for a decade, it almost seems illogical not to blame yourself. I feel like I can still his last goodbye and I look at pictures of him before the drugs and I cry because I've seen people come back, but I don't believe he ever will. So I feel widowed and this song hits me so hard especially hearing his pain when he sings it. I wish love and peace to anyone dealing with losing loved ones to hard drugs and I wish healing and return to individuals losing themselves to hard drugs. In the end I had to protect myself and my children.. anyway, this song hits so hand. When he sings "it took me so long to realize I could still hear her last goodbye" it brings up a moment for me that crushes my heart every time. Beautiful song

Man, iv been playing this song most days and still never ever tire of it. I was driving my son to an after school event a few weeks back and he asked me “Dad, why does he scream RAAAA like that?” So I explained to him that this man is singing with all his heart and he’s so sad because he just loved his mum so much and when she sadly died it broke his heart. So his scream is just the sad emotion he’s feeling, just escaping his soul. My son (who’s 5) didn’t reply he just listened and at the end of the song he told me from the back of the car that “it makes his eyes wet” Man oh man that boy of mine had a full on tear ready to drop and I couldn’t be happier. It’s now our song we listen to while driving and he still just listens. RIP Charles and I can’t thank you enough

In this performance, he gave a masterclass showing us why it’s called SOUL music. You could understand what kind of human being he was just by the way he expresses himself on stage. You could feel his honesty, his sincerity, humility, sensitivity, kindness, compassion, as well as his loneliness, sorrows, and immense pain. Just in this one song, he teaches us what it means to be human, by taking the mic and laying his entire soul absolutely bare, scars and all, so that we may find healing or consolation within his music. I think this is something all musicians should strive to achieve when writing new songs, or when performing on stage. To do it with all their love behind it, in hopes to uplift or move someone.
