    The fact that Ben Stiller also played a full-blown special needs kid proves that the movie is a great big self-aware joke. The Lazarus character literally says he’s “a white guy playing a black guy”. Meanwhile, there’s real life human beings “converting to black” by getting melanin therapy and hijacking black culture, but no one bats an eyelash.

    When it came out it was en vogue for actors to do body transformations in order to hopefully win awards. They were taking that to the farthest extreme to show how dumb those actors can often look. The intention of the joke wasn’t to make fun of black people it was to make fun of actors. People were definitely offended, but the people who are offended are offended because they believe it’s not okay to do blackface under any circumstances. The question on if you think it’s okay pr not really boils down to if you think intention matters or not.

    I always find it interesting that people, consistently, bring up RDJ and his role in Tropic Thunder asking if it was offensive, yet not one person has an issue with the Wayans Brothers doing White Chicks. Both were extremely funny, essentially identical in scenario, but are viewed entirely different.

  • @davy209

    @davy209

    10 ай бұрын

    I found both movies funny and thoroughly entertaining. I get why some people will view White Chicks, especially now, as incredibly offensive and a double standard for black face. But in regards to White Chicks for me personally, the jokes were more about how Marlon and Shawn’s characters view white woken based on their own personal and cultural biases but it’s when they started to bond with their new white friends was when their undercover personas slowly start to become less stereotypical and stronger motivation to solve the cases and protect all of the girls. But that’s just my personal opinion on the movie, other people have the right to disagree with me and find the movie personal offensive.

    Context is everything, I don't get upset anymore till I hear the whole story from as many sides as I can! Then I decide how I feel, to many times I flew off the handle about something only knowing one side and made a ass of myself, not anymore! It is annoying but sometimes you just got to take the extra time to hear and see everything out for yourself before handing out judgements.

    There is a big difference between lighthearted jokes and those with cruel intentions. The people who were offended by this are either incapable of telling the difference or are offended for the sake of being offended. If we can't poke fun based on our differences how can we expect to bond based on our similarities?

    Charlamagne should really watch it because they weren't really explaining the dynamic of RDJ's role, yes they were making fun at how far method actors will go, but more importantly they were calling out how far Hollywood was going in order to not cast black actors in prominent roles which is exampled in the scenes between RDJ and Brandon T Jackson's character. BTJ straight up tells RDJ, "Maybe I felt like I had to represent? Because they had 1 good part in for a black guy and they gave it to Crocodile Dundee!" Like take they comedy away and that was actually a really good social commentary for this film.

    RDJ wasn't pretending to be black in Tropic Thunder. He was mocking intense actors and was pretending to be an Australian actor trying to pretend to be a caricature of a stereotypical black character from 80s movies. They were making fun of the stereotypes. The actual black character in the movie calls him out for it repeatedly. They shouldn't apologize for anything, it was clearly satire
