Charismatic Legalism: Confusing Convictions With Commandments

Charismatic Legalism: When We Confusing Convictions With Commandments
In this episode of The Remnant Radio Michael, Michael and Josh are covering the Charismatic convictions that exist within the charismatic movement. Is it wrong to watch Harry Potter or Pokemon? Are there hidden cultic images in the toco bell logo or the monster energy drink can? Can we, or should we give our money to organizations like Target, Disney, and Starbucks if they promote antichristian values? Can a Christian enjoy a beer? Some may think these convictions are silly, others may find the reasons for these convictions compelling, but what does the word of God say? Fortunately for us, there are both principles in the scriptures and commands in the scriptures that can guide us through discerning if these convictions are personal or universal.
We need to realize that every single culture reads scripture with its own cultural mores. Charismatics are no more guilty of confusing their own code of ethics with the ethics of the Bible, than any other denomination or movement with Christianity. That being said, we are a charismatic theology podcast, and it's probably a good thing for us to want to talk this stuff out.

This is my favorite episode yet, guys, and I don’t say that lightly! I’ve been a viewer for a while now, and y’all are a God-send in general, but you perfectly introduced my consistent internal conflict as a Kierkegaardian/Wesleyan between subjectivity and objectivity. I LOVED IT! Keep doing your thing, it just keeps getting better. ♥️

Disney: For me, I unsubscribed from Disney+. It wasn't the "woke" agenda because, newsflash, sinners sin. They love it. They sell it. They enjoy it. But what took me over the edge was the whole "My child is pansexual" and "Disney needs to be a place where my child feels welcome". Pansexual is not Bisexual. It's defined as opened to all sexual encounters (pan means all) and sexually attracted to everyone. Everyone means everyone, regardless of age, race, or gender. Mind you, the context of this is "my child". More importantly, the debate was sparked over PRE 4th grader's! I don't want my 3rd grader open to sexual activity of any type. I want them NON-sexual. Disney doesn't. Then, coming out and saying 50% of all characters in a Disney movie going forward will be LGBTQ+... Disney is no loner selling entertainment. They're selling sexual identity. That is now their brand. That's a brand I, personally, ain't interested in backing... not when it's marketed to kids.

Pansexual does not mean regardless of age. It strictly has to do with regardless of gender (cisgender, trans etc..) This is free information on the internet. Why are people hellbent on sexualizing the lgbtq community? I don't understand that. There is no extension or room for innocence and that's just sad that automatically it's all about sex and nothing more. Children shouldn't be sexualized regardless of how they identify. It's weird, and if it was the other way around, where it was a "normal" household with father and mother, therefore it's not sexual nor considered an agenda at that point?

I can only go by the definition of "pansexual" by all the online dictionaries. Pan means all. The definition is "Sexually attracted to everyone". And "Open to sexual activity with anyone regardless of gender". "Anyone" "everyone".. Pan means all. All is all. So, YES... this is all about sexual activity with KIDS.

I would also say for parents who feel convicted over certain things they don’t want their children to participate in, give your children an explanation as to why they shouldn’t participate and even present your research and findings to them. Children, and I would say especially teens, want a reason why it’s wrong, and I feel like the pushback would be a lot less if you could give a rational and articulated response so that your children understand the deeper reasons and it’s not just because “it’s demonic”. It might very well be, especially within modern culture, but show them why and explain it to them. Once the kids are grown up, they can do their own research, but I feel like the chances that they will indulge in the material once they leave the house because of rebellion against the “don’t touch” rule would be less likely. Just some thoughts, God bless!

I unfortunately know a lot of Christians - including my own young adult children who don’t mind watching entertainment that is very sinful, sexually immoral, degenerate, and full of foul language. I can’t understand this. God says to hate what he hates and love what he loves. I take that seriously. It actually makes me sorrowful that so many Christian’s aren’t bothered by sin in these shows and can dismiss it so easily. It’s a searing of the conscience. I then hear people say to me that’s my own conviction and they don’t feel that. Can you explain that. Because to me sin is sin and is very well spelled out in the scriptures as we are to abstain from these things. Not because we are better but because it’s a sin against our Heavenly Father.

I agree. There are times I watch a movie and it curses or blamphemes and I’m like,”Father forgive the script writers.” But if it keeps going on and on I turn it off. I used to play GTA before I was saved and I tried to play it again being born again and the Holy Spirit was like nope. And I got rid of it. The game is literally going against the 8th commandment 😂😂 but I still play video games but have gotten/not played some that are just plainly ungodly.

When it comes to Harry Potter why on earth would we watch and be entertained and enjoy anything that God calls an abomination and that whoever practices these things have thier part in the lake of fire? 🔥🔥🔥 The Bible clearly says "Dont do" sorcery and witchcraft... Why on earth would anyone think the Holy Spirit would be saying "Do" watch it. 😤 Revelation 21:8 [8]But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Micah 5:10-12 10 “In that day,” declares the LORD, “I will destroy your horses from among you and demolish your chariots. 11 I will destroy the cities of your land and tear down all your strongholds. 12 I will destroy your witchcraft and you will no longer cast spells. Why would we support in any way the production of these kinds of films? Why would we spend Gods money to watch witchcraft? Hope this is an eye opener to someone. Be blessed all 🙌

I grew up with Sailor Moon and Pokémon. God told me to purge the Sailor Moon stuff years ago and I only did so partially. (Last week I finished that purge.) Pokémon? Laughed off any idea of Pokemon being demonic until two weeks ago. The topic kept coming up in unrelated sermons I was listening to over the next two weeks. I decided, if I am going to purge Pokemon, I need a concrete reason for it to be demonic. I prayed and asked God to finally reveal it to me once and for all if it is or is not demonic. That night I was researching until I discovered the “Satan equivalent” Pokémon, Giratina. If there is Giratina, then who is the god Pokémon? The god of all of the Pokemon universe is Arceus. Arceus is designed after the kirin, a chimera, essentially the Japanese equivalent of the unicorn. I made it this far and decided to go to bed because I couldn’t make any connections. As soon as I rolled over, I remembered a fallen angel that first appears as a unicorn. The occult believes this demon “gives excellent familiars.” Dictionary definition of familiar: A spirit often embodied in an animal and held to attend and serve or guard a person. Is that not exactly what Pokémon are? Demons are demons regardless of how cute they are. I’ve played Pokémon for two decades, and on Friday I deleted the app and burned all of it. Rare cards up in flames in the name of Jesus.

Though I have no problem having a beer with a curry, I would not be able to (in good conscience) have a beer with a brother who has been set free from alcoholism; for that would be putting a stumbling block before him. Likewise, I would not expect the brother who was set free from alcoholism to tell me that I must never drink for it is sinful and worthy of the second death.

I think some people are able to watch certain movies that others can't is because they have become accustomed to that top of a movie and their conscience has become seared. Personally speaking, when I decide what to watch or listen to, I judge it based on Philippians 4:8. As for what I eat or drink, I do my best to treat my body as the temple of the Holy Spirit, of course I fail many times like everyone else.

You guys are awesome! The body needs to be having time to discuss these things together, not in a church event, but as believers doing life together! Branching from that point we are so compartmentalized as supposed to having everything be submitted to Christ and having the habit of putting Christ at the center of everything! I believe that the whole counsel of scripture illuminated by the Holy Spirit and his wisdom will lead us to the law of liberty (James), which is actually a centering our lives on Christ, freedom, not a freedom to do our own will type of freedom that the world worships and that Americans worship. Removing ourselves from our cultural context just as we are meant to do as we seek to study scripture, is not something many Christian’s do, we start from our culture: “can I watch this thing my spirit wants?” VS: “I am meant to become one with God and do the will of the Father just as Jesus did and through Jesus, so does this activity help me become one, does it honor the father? If we are meant to live a lifestyle of losing our life, should not our fun activities honor God? Can I glorify God by watching one of my fav movies, Die Hard? There’s nudity, there’s violence, there’s terrible cursing and coarse joking and more…if I frame my life in terms of honoring God or not, how could I justify watching this? To watch something, I believe, is on some level giving myself to the thing. I am allowing this medium to please me to fulfill something in me. That sounds like a form of worship to me. Also, I do not think we are meant to be exposed to so many ideas all over the place. I think if the physical realm became invisible to us and the spiritual realm be came visible to us so to speak, we would think very differently. But, all that to say I struggle with delighting in the movies and tv shows etc etc and I am sincerely, asking these questions and desiring to reject anything that displeases God in my life. Love to all.

Thank you for sharing this! I’m kind of sad that not more people have said the same sort of thing. How in the world could we watch something like a horror movie or witchcraft. How does that honor God? Couldn’t we find better and more productive things to do with our time? Are we out there sharing the gospel? We could take up a new hobby that actually helps us with our health or a hobby that we can share with others. I just don’t see the place of, all these movies and television shows in our lives as far as building us up in the Lord.

Charisma magazine once did an article debunking the pokemon legalism. It was compelling and personally helped me as a new believer be more discerning concerning Christian legalsim/ fear culture. That being said in my experience , looking at the fruit, most adults I've met who were into pokemon look back on it with nostalgia and fond memories but not a lot of cult like behavior. However, I often see people who were into Harry Potter growing up who are are OBSESSED with it , tattooed with HP symbols, into witchcraft or magic and seems to have more LGBT+ people involved in it than some other groups. Is it the story itself, the culture involved or does it open a door for some people? IDK, but I do think there are not demons of specific pop culture stories or characters. I think there are demons who use ANYTHING they can to harm, stumble, possess or destroy people. Legalistic religion and hedonistic worldliness can both potentially take you down a road away from Father.

This might also have something to do with the imaginary world of Harry Potter being better developed, since Pokemon was made as an episodic advertisement for toys and Harry Potter was actually written to be an engaging book. Also, people love to be able to identify themselves with personality categories. Pokemon and Harry Potter are both avowedly fictional fantasies, but to people who don't recognize God, it's exactly as meaningful as anything else.

Guys y'all are killing it! I'm so impressed with your channel and topics. I share your videos all the time too! What I really enjoy is that y'all seem to be so biblically sound/solid and balanced charismatics too! That is so refreshing to me. I am trying to have that mindset too. I love that y'all talk about all these topics and try to bring clarity on differences between commands and personal convictions. I also have been down rabbit holes of conspiracy theories and have heard all the monster/vaccine/ Pokémon ect stuff. The only thing I'd say is that concerning movies with witchcraft like Harry Potter ect ..I do think there is scripture for us to steer clear of entertaining those dark demonic stuff from OT and NT (Deuteronomy/Acts). But I also realize that I have a background in occult/new age and that it's a personal conviction for me to also steer clear of that kind of entertainment. I had to get deliverance as I've shared before and I just want to guard it by not allowing room for the enemy. But I am not legalistic about it ..for example, I visited universal studio last year and rode the Harry Potter rides which we amazingly fun y'all! However, I didn't allow my kids to participate in some of the magic sorcerer stuff. That is what I mean by personal conviction and trying to be balanced. I'm so thankful for your channel and I pray God continues to grow it past 100,000 subs! Lol mine only has 115 subs but trying to not despise small beginnings! Thinking while listening brought this to mind. Many people, possibly some of you, have made an idol of the bible and of theology. Like the pharisees who had no relationship with God, but had a relationship of sorts with scripture and theology. People don't even consider such a thing because it sounds so right to be a person of the word and have accurate theology.

We lose a lot of brothers and sisters because of this too ..As always, another topic not talked about enough. I grew up in a church that condemned things other denominations allowed in their churches, and also with constantly being told you have to stop doing this or that, and struggled for a long time as a new believer and when I found passages like the ones mentioned where Paul talks about not condemning others, especially new believers, and I would ask, I would be told not to. I could give many examples but in trying to keep this short, I wish I could talk to everyone I grew up with and say this stuff to, but as I said, it is very discouraged in our churches and that is not right, and another reason why I love your content and pray that these discussions reach the right ears. Basically, I left the church but thank God HE didn't leave me. A lot of believers are turned away from the faith because of these actions. Be blessed.

Perhaps an episode on the harsh realities of practicing witchcraft. It makes me sad that Children get murdered for witchcraft purposes. Some have limbs violently hacked of. Scripture does describe magic as powerful, somewhere it speaks of witches keeping those who should have died, alive, and those who should have stayed alive, making them die before there time. Alternative episode idea, if you want it. Or perhaps interview someone with insight into this topic.

All things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial. This shouldn't even be about whether something is sin or not. I think you guys are approaching this from the wrong angle (to be fair I'm not done the episode yet lol). We are told not to violate love, and to guard our hearts, to avoid idols, things like that. I'm also uncomfortable with legalism, but I think Josh's response to the guy who has seen a lot of people with demons cast out that identified themselves as having a root in Pokemon, is not a good response. (I say that as someone with no dog in the fight - I never saw pokemon or played it or anything in my life lol, I know nothing about it and don't care - but I'd hear out the deliverance guy for sure) If we as mature believers know there are specific risks and harms associated with cultural phenomena, we don't need to make them "sin," but we do need to make the harms and risks known, take them seriously, and ask ourselves if our liberty is hurting ourselves or others. And having said that, as an artist with a history in occult spiritual stuff, I know that actually yeah, demonic stuff is infused in a lot of art, movies, etc. Is it sin to be exposed to it? No. Is it sin to enjoy it? Maybe not. Is it beneficial? I would argue not, it's not beneficial. Is it harmful? Frequently. Not just to individuals, but cultures. Harry Potter acted as a gateway to witchcraft for an entire generation, not just in overt occultism but in the cultural shifts we are now seeing. You think this mental health epidemic came out of nowhere? It didn't. Is it sin to watch HP? No, obviously not. Perhaps we can study it to understand what is happening in culture. I can't watch it, it makes me nauseous and I hate it for what it is. But, some cultural works that have demonic energy in them, and demonic themes, I will watch in small doses, and I always end up feeling upset by what is being manipulated into the world through it. Again, not about what is sin and what isn't. I do think there is some inherent redemptive beauty in a human being's work of creative excellence, even if it's coming from their flesh and demonic strongholds. They are still in God's image, and creativity is beautiful! We shouldn't laugh off the potential harms, is all.

It’s weird because RR has discussed everything about the Gospel but never presented it by itself…Yet! But hey, I can’t wait when one day you preach the Gospel on RR! It’s going to be jam packed with scholarly work, amazing metaphors and be digestible for the laymen. It’s gonna be a the Super Gospel!

It was difficult to finish this video. How can anyone claim that their wife, who discerns spiritual things really well, can't watch something because of a demonic presence, but then be like but it's cool if I watch it because I don't have that discernment. Bro, maybe listen to your wife because her eyes have been open to that? Demons don't discriminate, and demonic doors open up when we're repeatedly entertaining them. I've been delievered of a swarm of hovering demons myself. I didn't get them because I was going out and looking for them. They often find their ways in when we make (repeated) sinful decisions, when we turn things into idols, or when we are abused by others. Demons sitting on the liquor store doors? I have no idea, but I do know that if you get drunk you're opening yourself up to opportunities for the devil. I generally appreciate the "middle ground" approach that you guys take on your videos, but this one just feels like you've lost where you stand in an attempt to rationalize, and neutralize any urgency around, the demonic.

So if Satan is a copy cat of God, bc he wants the worship, and if God uses signs, symbols, and patterns, then why would Satan do that in this kingdom of his? Christian businesses put symbols in their stuff as a way to honor God, then why would we not think that people who worship Satan, not unknowingly but knowingly then why would they not do the same thing. I absolutely believe there are demonic symbols in more things than we realize. However I do agree, that so much of our convictions are subjective but people try to put their personal convictions on everyone else, and again, sometimes demons come through things bc of idolatry and not necessarily bc that thing has demons attached. I taught my kids about all these things and when my kids got to a certain age, I allowed them to start making their own choices so they can learn self control and learn to listen to the Holy Spirit and not just do something bc mom said and I have found that my kids are making decisions bc they were taught and allowed to figure it out instead of forcing them and causing them to rebel

Mike, I looked into the Ecclesiastes 7:18 you quoted about "the fear of God avoids extremes", it sounded compelling for this topic, but actually I only found the NIV and NLT to translate it the way quoted in the episode, and both come with an alternate reading in my bible notes. ESV, nasb, nkjv, do not translate it that way. Actually they change the meaning quite substantially, to the point I don't think it could be used for the argument of this episode. But that's my translation criticism opinion. Thanks for your hard work. I Listen to every episode. Favorite channel!

It is good that you grasp one thing and also not let go of the other; for the one who fears God comes forth with both of them.” ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭7:16-18‬ ‭ I read this verse in context years ago from NASB and came away understanding what Michael pointed out with it. I think it makes sense, people get way to uptight and legalistic striving to look righteous and smart and this verse says this is not good.

That last verse is a little hard to translate, but the fuller context Id personally take it as don't trust in your own estimation of righteousness. the fear of the Lord leads us to look to God for His righteousness. "the fear of God avoids extremes" just doesn't seem like it lines up with the fuller idea of the fear of the Lord in scripture. Debatable I guess, just like the broader episode content lol

Pokémon has ghosts, psychics and Japanese religion engrained in it. Watch any episode about ghost Pokémon or psychic ones and you will see this is an obvious problem. Ghosts are demons and psychics use demons and witchcraft. Your stance on Pokémon shows a great lack of knowledge about the demonic and their aim for kids. I was the same way and now I know I can not have any entertainment with the supernatural, because it is used to draw us to witchcraft, just as Naruto. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia about one of these such episodes: so Ash realizes that he must battle and collect a ghost Pokémon in order to defeat the young girl's psychic Pokémon. In search of a ghost Pokémon, he heads immediately for a tower in Lavender Town where they are said to dwell. Jessie, James and Meowth from Team Rocket are already at the tower, but as they lay in wait for our heroes, they are attacked by Gastly, Haunter and Gangar. In the process of trying to defeat the ghost Pokémon, Ash learns a lesson or two about the mystical spirit world. Can Ash capture a ghost Pokémon and if so, will it be enough to defeat the psychic Gym Leader of Saffron City? Judge for yourselves if you think kids should be exposed and groomed by this trash.

I agree with that. But in the gray areas I think we just have to seek the Holy Spirit, which is inevitably more subjective how we interpret…. Anyway…. Since I owe you a comment on the sovereignty stuff from another chat…. My bad for not getting back. Personally, I view things from more of a traditional sovereignty / providence perspective. To me it comes down to primary and secondary causes. A good example of this is the Cross. God was the primary cause of the crucifixion bc He predestined it (Acts 2, 4). But that doesn’t mean that the Holy Spirit filled Judas to force the betrayal. No, Satan did that. Satan, not the Holy Spirit, was empowering those who mocked and spat and nailed Jesus to the tree. So even though God was “over” it all-that’s what it means that He is the primary cause-He did not Himself commit sin. People did-they were the secondary cause. Of course there is an element of mystery in all of this. How does God ordain that sin happens-as Acts 2 and 4 make clear He did with the Cross-without Himself sinning? (Another example is Gen 45 with Joeseph.) We don’t precisely know how, but we know (or at least, I believe) that it’s true. You might think of it like the sun. The Sun only emits light and heat, just as God only emanates glory and goodness. When the sun goes down, however, the outcome is darkness and coldness. Dark and cold are not the “direct product” of the sun, but indirectly, they result from the sun setting. In the same way, God only emanates glory and goodness by His positive agency, but He also moves and acts in such a manner that darkness and evil result. Not as a direct product, but as an indirect one, as it were. Does God want all the evil in the world to be eradicated? Of course. That’s why Jesus came, to deal with it. In the meantime, God allows a bunch of mess until Christ returns to put all enemies under His feet (1 Cor 15). That’s about the best I can do in a brief KZread comment! Blessings

Your wife is very wise indeed. She is yielding to the guidance of The Holy Spirit not to watch Harry Potter. May The LORD Almighty continue to direct her path and bless her walk with Him along the narrow path, in the Mighty and Matchless Name of Jesus Christ our Blessed Messiah 🙏🏼✝️👑

Oh don't get me wrong, I won't let our daughter watch it. Unless it's to expose in order to teach the apologetic :)

@@TheNathanMac That's great! good job dad! I think that is super important to educate kids about it and share testimonials too once they are of age to understand. I have been attacked by demons and I have had that conversation with my 15 year old and told him (those movies and new age) it can be a gateway and for him to steer clear.

Augustine felt Sex was a sin even within Marriage all through Gnostic and Neo-Platonism which he studied before he converted to Christianity and still held onto these beliefs

Guys, I grew up not being able to watch many shows, or even play with certain toys because my mom read "Turmoil in the Toy Box". I don't begrudge it at all. I use discernment, especially with entertainment, and some things Holy Spirit allows me to watch\heart ead and some He doesn't. There is music that makes my spirit cringe but it doesn't bother my believer friends. Because He has made us different from one another, it seems logical that our omniscient Father would deal with each of us according to our personalities with our personal weaknesses & strengths. It's easy to know the things the Word shouts; but making doctrine out of its whispers is how cults are birthed. I appreciate this dialogue. It's very Berean.
