For everyone wondering this is from the Russian film adaptation of the book And Quiet Flows the Don by Mikhail Sholokhov which details the lives of the Don cossacks in WW1 and the Russian revolution. I haven't seen the film but im guessing the music is edited because this is a horrific picture of war in the book rather than a proud nationalistic charge into battle.

the book is an anti-war book, which is crazy considering it was published in the Soviet Union soon after the end of the civil war there and most characters are fighting against the Reds for most of the epic.

Broseph Stalin The uniforms are correct. Those are early war Austro-Hungarian uniforms. WW2 German uniforms would be field green, and the peak on the cap would be bigger. The MG-34 is out of place though. It can't even pass as a stand-in for a Schwarzlose.

¿ Cavalry defeating quick - firing light artillery ? Even if the KuK army's performance in the Galician Campaigns left much to be desired, these scenes are quite exaggerated, to say nothing of the MG 32's, a Wehrmacht's WWII weapon. The Cossacks were an awesome cavalry corps, however the Hungarian hussars of the Habsburg army, as well as the German Uhlans, were formidable opponents. Thank you for sharing.

It is amazing how many WWI generals were cavalry men who had not figured out machine guns and cannons would stop a charge.

No it's not. MG-08/18 has the bipod positioned in the center and also has a much larger...non-barrel-part? Anyway, this MG is too small and sleek to be an MG-08/18.

This was a Glorious Charge.

My grandparents emigrated to the USA from Galicia in 1910. Later I became a student of WWI and found out the hundreds of thousands of Russians and Austro-Hungarians fought their in WWI. Glad they left. Two Empires died in Galicia despite the heroics!

Когда появился максим, лошадь стала средством доставки солдат на поле боя. Кавалерия стала воевать в пешем строю. Несколько удачных атак кавалерии скорее исключение чем правило. Гражданская война имела некоторую специфику ( отсутствие сплошной линии фронта, война вдоль дорог) которая позволила более или менее эффективно использовать кавалерию. Но уже Махно с тачанкой спел лебединую песенку лихим кавалерийским атакам.

В первую мировую кавалерия использовалась часто в атаках в конном строю.И удачно.Лошади быстро преодолевали расстояние до пулеметов.

А что же в этом клипе не показали, как Григорий Мелехов зарубил безоружного австрийского солдата. А ведь это одна из сильнейших моментов и в книге и в обоих фильмах (в старом и в новом). Григорий думал и сожалел и понимал, что это было неоправданное убийство (в обоих фильмах это было отмечено). А, вообще, я и мои земляки казаков не любим, потому, что то они разгоняли на пару с черносотенцами и рубили рабочих в моем родном городе. Городе невест, Первого Совета и Третьего города пролетариев (после Москвы и Петрограда). Но к творчеству Шолохова отношусь с трепетом благодарного читателя, и Григорий Мелехов мой один из любимых литературных героев.

Glad my grandparents left Galicia in 1910. There was mass carnage there during WWI. Unfortunately the Eastern Front of WWI is not studied as much as the Western Front.

Infantry if routed, running away from cavalry is suicidal, even against lancers it is better to form squares esp if you can incorporate a barrier such as a fence in your square. shoot or use the bayonet. or fallen lances.

It looks like this is about the Brusilov Offensive against the Austro Hungarians. And if the Russian high command had given Brusilov more troops or made the Northern and Central Army groups to attack as well Russian might have won the war in 1916 and there would have been no Bolshevik revolution!

Пушки в этой сцене, между прочим, тоже не соответствуют реальности, это русские трехдюймовые пушки (т.е. 76,2 мм) обр.1902 года Путиловского завода, в то время, как должны были быть 75 мм Шкода. Ну и что с того? Во второй сцене, из старого советского фильма, пулемет тоже, между прочим, неправильный, так как должен был быть Шварцлозе, с водяным охлаждением ствола, как у пулемета Максим, а использован в сцене французский Гочкисс. Что было, то и использовали. Знатоки задротили в стрелялки, вот и знают, как выглядит хотя бы МГ-34. Знатоки, а вы знаете, что в "Спасении рядового Райана" танк "Тигр" никакой не Тигр? А советский Т-34/85, закамуфлированный под немца. Не бомбит у вас по этому поводу?
