I park my YAMAHA XVS950A cruiser motorcycle outside in the backyard. And cover it with a rain-cover. It is parked about 6 metres from my garage rear-door. But I can still charge my motorcycle battery even if it is raining outside.
I use a long extension 8AWG wire-size DC twin-core power-cable to connect my workshop charger (which is in the garage), to the motorcycle parked outside. There is an ANDERSON POWER SB50 connector that terminates the extension cable. This ANDERSON POWER SB50 connects to another SB50 connector which is already cabled directly to the motorcycle battery. The 2 joined SB50 connectors then sit in the motorcycle swingarm area, under protection of the rain-cover.
In this video, I demonstrate the system described above, & also show how I add an ANDERSON POWER SB50 environmental boot (with cover) to provide IP64-rated dust & water ingress protection to the connector.
Note that genuine ANDERSON POWER SB50 connector plastic housings come in 7 different colors. And by design, a genuine ANDERSON POWER SB50 connector housing of 1 color, will only connect to another SB50 of the same color. For example, a grey connector housing will connect to another grey connector housing. And will not connect to say a green or red connector housing.
Be aware that there are other look-alike SB50 connectors not made by the company ANDERSON POWER. These non-genuine ANDERSON POWER connectors may not have the same color-matching constraint.
There are different ANDERSON POWER silver-plated wire-contacts to fit 6AWG, 8AWG, & 12-10AWG wire-sizes into the SB50 housing. It is necessary to select the correct silver-contact product code to fit the wire-size properly.
Genuine ANDERSON POWER connectors are engineered, tested & certified products to handle defined operating conditions such as temperature, & electrical current. Be aware that non-genuine ANDERSON POWER connectors may not have undergone the same engineering, test & certification process. If it is important to you to only use genuine ANDERSON POWER products, then before you buy, check to see if the product is a genuine ANDERSON POWER product. There will be markings on the housing to state the name ANDERSON POWER if it is genuine.
