Charcoal Pencil Tutorial: Simple Still Life
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this charcoal pencil tutorial, I show you how to draw a simple still life suitable for beginners.
** Materials Used in This Lesson **
- Pencils: Dark/black charcoal pencil (best to have a couple to work between) and a white charcoal pencil.
- Paper: any mid-toned drawing paper (I use a mid-grey but a mid-blue, green or tan would work too). I use a paper by Strathmore.
- Other: a bending stump, craft knife, sanding block (or piece of sandpaper).
- Online photo editor: I mention this in the video for those that don't have a Mac, iPad or photo software. Go here: pixlr.com/x/

You are one of a very, very few artists on YT who actually starts with the construction drawing. Most have already traced it or use the grid method. I love these. They are so helpful.
Your method of placing pieces on paper with squares & circles I foundinviting so on a grey page I did the drawing, really enjoyed it & on stepping back realised the paper was way too small for the piece, so this afternoon re started it on a larger sheet. Am hoping to start charcoaling it soon. Your teaching method is for me very understandable. Thanks for making it so easy. Have nearly finished this exercise finding it a super exercise! Thanks.
Well done. So interesting. So lovely. Carry on with the good work.
You are one of the best teachers on KZread for realistic drawings! Every time I watch one of your tutorials, I get a better idea of how to make my artwork better. Thanks!
People would pay fees for what you are doing on KZread or even less ... We are lucky to have found you... Thanks 😊! Some would make it available on patreon page but you have given us so much for free without timelasp..... Lets appreciate that people..... And cliking like or subs feels so trifle to what you are doing...
My Friday treat watching Phil drawing. Will try to do the drawing next. Thank you.
Thank you Phil. Very generous of you. So easy to follow. I’m feeling more confident already

Phil; if you were to frame this image, how would you seal it for protection? Great work, thank you!
Thank you very much dear teacher, I would love to know your name, for charcoal drawings, I had fun learning how to leave shadows and how to blur shades in black
I actually looking for digital drawing tutorial but this one is really helpful! I’m new to charcoal drawing and never thought the white charcoal as highlight. The other tutorial only use eraser. Is is because the colored paper? Thank you

The toned paper would allow for the white charcoal to create highlights on the paper. With white paper you're more likely to pull back highlights with an eraser.
What kind of charcoal you used, please mention.
I am enjoying these tutorials but with this one there's no original photo.
How on earth have I ended up on your mailing list!!!!
