Funny how I came across this as I was planning on buiding a rocket-fired retort myself. Never heard of the Hookway version. But I need mine to heat my workshop too, as I can't bear such waste of heat. That model seems a tad risky for indoor use. Interestingly the Hookway's wordpress web pages are now non-fuctional as far as I've found.

What sort of ratio to stock wood to charcoal did you get.? I'm looking at them for a Ash woodland I help out at. Is the retort made by Hookway as it seems slightly taller than the ones I've seen in the past.

This is James Hookway's stainless steel one, it looks identical to the one he made, last year I had heard he was selling it so im guessing it is.

these are custom made, see above comment. he used to sell the plans for his first one for £10 which is handy, but there's not much to it really.

@@RAMSHACKLE28 he still does. The plans for the stainless are 95. Worth it if you know how to fabricate and have he tools, but I don't.

Maybe it's charcoal but in terms of BIOCHAR it is any5hing but "beautyfull stuff" !! It's visibly LOADED with hydrocarbon residuals... That happens in almost any "closed" report and tbh i wouldnt like even Eutingen any barbecue produced on that Oily charcoal ! Expensive looking but rather useless retort if you dont plan to use the "charcoal" EXCLUSIVELY for heating or smelting !!?

Nice retort but your wasting valuable syn gas you could be making electricity from it.
