Probably because they have internalized racism they dont know about and havent tried to unpack. Its good to write flat characters in stories and thats what they think they are doing but really thwy are just making a charcter whos personality is what they think all black people act like but people are people you dont act a certain way because of your skin.

A while back I watched a video on male heros and the creator pointed out that it's really hard to nail down traits they all tend to have in common the way you can with female heros, until you pick a race or sexuallity other than white and straight allosexual. It's like we can build any character we want on the "straight white man" foundation but the moment we switch out one of those elements we panic and start reaching out for any stereotype we can cling to. The weirdest thing is that this seems to happen regardless of who is writing. I've definately found plenty of women authors who can't write reasonably complex and believable women characters.

TWO non-white characters? Who is the other one? The quiet Asian girl with the strict parents and the 6.0 GPA who helps her pass the Big Test? Or is it the sexy salsa dancing Latina who invites our MC to a backyard fiesta with just 300 of her cousins and who teaches our MC to embrace her sexy side?

Aisha was never that close to Bloom, it was always Bloom and Stella. Also, Bloom was getting jealous of Aisha when they had just met/just become friends, but the jealous disappeared as they got closer. I will say, though, that when Nickelodeon took over Winx Club, they made Aisha the stereotypical sassy black character. Originally, she was insecure and was slowly building up her confidence in herself. I hate how Nickelodeon changed her 😒

Which is why authors need to think of characters as people from a place rather than a race. Hell, casting directors need to do that, too. It makes no sense that a group of friends that were close since childhood don't sound more like each other than stock characters. Region and social circles determine that stuff.

Mine version is reversed type. In Harems of Metaphore City, MMC is black male (Dutch Surinamese) which he might be intimidating and serious in first place, but he actually funny and has bunch of hidden sides (including his sporty and geeky side). His best friend is a white German-born Polish, who always being a loyal friend for MMC, and he has lack of interest for romance
great video also black bff (sorry idk their name) absolutely ate this look 👌
I'm writing a book where one of the main female leads (there are two) has a darker color skin (I'll call her "V" for reference), and the other has a lighter color skin ("R" for reference. Sure, they don't act the same, but that's because of social status and just their overall personalities. V is from a much higher social status while R appears randomly one day with a lot of blank spots in her memory, so she doesn't really have a social status at all. Of course, then the two girls meet and their personalities compliment each other. V is more calm and composed and prefers making a quick yet sensible and logical plan and then immediately acting while R is more shy yet energetic and overthinks things _way_ too much. V can calm R down and R makes sure that V, despite how perfect her plans seem, isn't rushing into anything without all crucial information necessary. There's much more to the story that comes in later, but if anyone actually sees thos and reads it all, could you give me a bit of feedback?

I remember reading a book where the characters were really diverse and nothing was mention except things like gold against one of the more diva characters dark skin and honestly i didnt know much about the characters race or ethnicity until i saw drawings of the characters cause skin color was mentioned to describe them once then it went entirely based off of personality after that. When characters' features were mentioned, it usually had a reason, like if they had trauma that left a scar or if they were checking out someone. All this is only going off of my memory, so i may be forgetting a few things, but i really enjoyed the books
Y'all did so well I was scared to like the video

The best way to do that is to consume media created by the characters you want to write! If you want to write a Muslim character, consume some media made by Muslims If you want to write an autistic character, consume some media made by autistic creators If you want to write about a black person, consume some media created by black people If you want to write about a transgender person, consume some media made by a trans person Etc It’s best learning from the source so you can make sure you aren’t learning from a stereotype !

She can also cover her face in black paint to really bridge that gap
Im writing a fantasy romance with a very white, red-haired MC and her love interest is black. . . But peopleeeee 😩😩😩. . . Thats not their defining trait 🥺🥺🥺. Tip: For the record I am of caucasian/Hispanic origin, not a PoC. Still, race can be written in application of sociological factors that may affect who they are as a person, why they are that way and what life circumstances they may or may not have gone theough in comparison to other characters of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. I wrote a choose-your-own-adventure with a black male teenager MC for college and my sociology professor said I wrote a believeable character with solid foundations for their race and social circumstances, who could be relatable to a broad spectrum of *actual* people of color- not stereotypes.
