This is very good and helpful, however, plasmolysis doesn’t mean the bacteria will burst especially since the bacteria is in a hypertonic environment which means the water would actually be coming out of the bacteria into the hypertonic solution.

Mark Jolley I think you should really double check that. You’re exactly right the diffusion is high to low, but we’re talking about osmosis here. The water moves towards the higher concentration until equilibrium. So since the environment is hypertonic, the water will move out of the bacteria to move towards the hypertonic solution which will cause the bacteria to shrink and not burst.
