Dune: The Novel Cut
Chapter 01 - A Very Delicate Time (Main Titles)
Hello, and welcome to Dune: The Novel Cut
Allow me to introduce this re-edit
Although many people love Dune for what it was, it is clear that there was much left out of the movie.
To date, there are two different versions of the film available
There is the theatrical version, running in at about two and a quarter hours, and the extended edition, which clocks in just under three hours.
An extended editing of Dune seems perfect, but the EE slipped up.
The editing was awful. At times they would zoom in on different effect shots to make it seem like a new shot (when the EE was made available in widescreen, this wasn't fixed!)
the Fremen's eyes were not blue
and rather than Virginia Madsen's velvet voice guiding us through the movie, we got a cheap painted prologue and an unkown male narrator (rumours fly that it was Frank Herbert himself, but no evidence ever surfaced)
This re-cut fixes all that (well, most of it)
In Dune: The Novel Cut, Virginia Madsen is the narrator, as she always should have been (which also ties in heavily with an alternate ending)
The editing is cleaned up. No repeat shots.
Unfortunately, I could not rotoscope the vast amount of footage needed for the Fremen eyes, but I think that's a small detail that can be overlooked.
With different chapters of this movie, you may notice small changes, large changes, or no changes at all (such as this first bit of the movie)
The movie was cut together with footage from the theatrical version, the extended edition, and the deleted scenes (there is a noticable contrast in quality, but I tried to smooth the transition through the sound)
Also, this version contains an alternate ending, keying in Irulan's purpose as the narrator, and giving some of the double meaning to this re-edit's title.
So like I said, some chapters may be untouched, and this is one of them. But changes will be seen in chapters to come.
All footage does belong to Universal. But this re-edit was made solely to show how the movie could have gone, had David Lynch had final say.
So as it's loaded, please sit back, and enjoy Dune as it was originally intended.

There are many fade cycles, especially in the extended version of the intro. I speculate it's because the exposition is very long and complex, and they needed to punctuate it and/or have her read each segment separately.

She absolutely is. And frankly speaking, the female cast of the 1984 version is much better looking than the one we have now (2021 & 2023). Lady Jessica : Francesca Annis Vs. Rebecca Ferguson. Francesca wins by a longshot, so much more beautiful. Princess Irulan : Virginia Madsen Vs. Florence Pugh. Virginia wins by a longshot, more beautiful and more regal looking. Chani : Sean Young Vs. Zendaya. Although Zendaya is a more appropriate choice for a girl living in a desert planet... I still find Sean Young more beautiful.

One of my all-time favorites. Saw it for the 1st time in the theaters when they released the directors cut. Originally i was disappointed. It wasn't until a few years later that i read the book that i understood how epic and diverse this universe was and the war being waged. Needless to say, the next time i watched it i fell in love with the movie and have continued to view it over the years like some guilty pleasure that is all my own.

I'd read the books before the movie. When i saw it i didn't think people would like it very well because they couldn't understand it. The main problem was that they tried covering too much in one movie. Plus they left out some key points that would have made some of the characters what they were and why.

A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct. This every sister of the Bene Gesserit knows. To begin your study of the life of Muad'Dib, then take care that you first place him in his time: born in the 57th year of the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV. And take the most special care that you locate Muad'Dib in his place: the planet Arrakis. Do not be deceived by the fact that he was born on Caladan and lived his first fifteen years there. Arrakis, the planet known as Dune, is forever his place. -from Manual of Muad'Dib by the Princess Irulan

Frank Herbert did say it was an allegory for oil. That the Spacing Guild was OPEC and such. But also that the mistakes of one man are magnified but those that follow him. Thus Paul was not some Messiah that could make it rain. But I think he was trying to say that no matter what, expect the unexpected. Also all the technology, even the weirding voice of the Bene Gesserit witches, is possible in theory. Its an amazing boo to read and he covers a lot of the orgin and inspiration for it at the end.

I love the theatrical and extended cut of this movie. Without the movie I never would have read the novels, and despite it's flaws, the movie is great in its own right. The movies were also my introduction to David Lynch, one of my favorite directors.

the truth is I have seen this in my youth, right after reading the books for the first time... and this felt fabulous, overwhelming and perfect; I know people criticized Lynch's version but - while seeing its faults - I also feel that he nailed some of the things in the book perfectly - Eno's theme is perfect, the atmosphere, many of the baroque cyberpunk-ish visuals; from this point of view a await Villneuve's version with some anxiety - and hope he had the clout to not let his vision be corrupted by the - many - stereotypes and formulaic elements that plague Hollywood film making today

All you people complaining about exposition should bare in mind that 1)the movie was already too long so if some extra scenes were added to "show not tell" it'd be even longer, thus "worse", 2) this exposition was a characteristic of the novel itself in every damn chapter 3) in other editions of the film you get even longer and worse exposition than these few moments of the gorgeous Irulan and of course 4)the things she says are in fact shown in the film but being Lynch it's useful to explain what the hell is going on.
