Chaotic pendulum - guess when it will stop flipping
Ғылым және технология
I pendulum attached to the end of another pendulum will swing chaotically. It's really hard to predict when it will stop flipping. Give it a go!

I waited too long, but was fascinated by your video. Thank you for posting. I would like to know how we know that this is chaotic, how sensitive must a system be to initial conditions for us to call the system, "Chaotic?" Is it provably chaotic?
@shanyangyau9270
2 жыл бұрын
I think it is. Chaos has a rather rigorous definition and the way I think about it is that a system is chaotic only when there is no threshold of accuracy (like “you must get the initial conditions to the 9th decimal place” or sth) that you can reach to get reliable results. Ie it is either bang on the exact initial conditions and or nothing.

I was waiting for the time, that it would flip in the lowest possible position and as slow as possible. That meant that it had exactly enough energy to flip, but it would lose some of it so it would not be possible to flip again
Somehow this video popped up right after I randomly thought about chaotic pendulums.

This is a chaotic pendulum, it's motion is---WHACK
0:15 : "Chaotic means there is no equation you can come up with... which will give you the position of the arms in the future in a reliable way." This statement can be misleading for the uninitiated. You're technically correct, but that is not the reason of Chaos. You can definitely come up with the "certain" equations. Reason why chaos happens is because you don't know the exact value of the "Parameters" and/or the (initial) "Variables" which you have to feed to the equation. And since the equations of such systems are non-linear, small mistake in these parameters/variables can propagate to big changes, and so the system becomes unpredictable over long period of time.
@eelcohoogendoorn8044
5 жыл бұрын
Nope. Computing the future state is not only impossible in a physical sense as you suggests, It is impossible even in the mathematical sense. You can come up with the differential equations describing the evolution (obviously), but you cannot write down an equation that explicitly computes the state as a function of any given point in time. Series expansion with infinite number of terms, or timestepping with infinitely small steps will do you no good. Given that there is no analytical solution, whatever scheme you propose for advancing such a solution through its algorithmic steps, will serve the same role as physical unknowns/disturbances.
@chiranjitray760
5 жыл бұрын
@@eelcohoogendoorn8044 I think he meant the same thing you said...that we can get a general differential equation of motion but that is pointless in mathematical sense also as we can't get the particular equation that can predict the space coordinates from time coordinates
@eelcohoogendoorn8044
5 жыл бұрын
@@chiranjitray760 His literal words are strictly about uncertainty in initial conditions, like a physical measurement problem; but even given mathematically exact initial conditions, it is still mathematically impossible to extrapolate to arbitrary timepoints in a convergent manner. And contrary to what is stated, yes, that is the essence of chaos in a mathematical sense.

Paused at 3:30, a couple of seconds after my guess of the final flip. Looking at the motion, I think I may have paused JUST before a flip but I'll follow the rules and comment before seeing :)
3:48 Edit. Turns out I was late. The way it seems to work is like two rods randomly moves rotational energy to each other. When the longer rod is pointing down without moving, the shorter spins like crazy. And vice versa.
I was waiting for that last flip. But it had already happened and I realized I was too late just before you stopped it XD fun video doh! Cheers.

3:47 Pretty sure 3:43 was the last flip, but I had to wait a few seconds to make sure the pendulum had a low enough energy that it wouldnt flip again.
I just love this pendulum!! Have u built it yourself? Have you some tips to build one? Like bearings etc

i was so entranced by this flippy thing that i forgot what i was even doing until steve grabbed it. XD
It looks like there’s some kind of motor in it (though there isn’t)
3:28... Here's to hoping Edit: Well I suppose if I learned anything from the nonlinear dynamics course I took last year, it's that this stuff really is rather hard to predict intuitively. If anyone's interested in learning a bit of the math behind systems like this, that class I took was based off a textbook by Professor Strogatz at Cornell. Strogatz's actual lectures for his version of the course are actually uploaded in full on KZread (and they ended up helping me a bit when I was studying). Searching "Strogatz nonlinear dynamics" will lead you to a neat little playlist of videos. Awesome video, by the way! Great channel, and looking forward to your other content.
3:44 Edit: dang it off by one flip
i was thinking you were going to explain that the time of the final flip isn't chaotic. because of how the system consistently loses energy

DynamicWorlds i saw that one and then it stopped flipping for a while, I went "oh no! I've missed it, I'll have to get the next one if there is one." And then I got it right. But only by accident I guess.
I think that possibly the best chaotic pendulum I've seen. Was it bought, or home-made?
Wait a minute, that should comply with the mathematics of two object intersecting orbits. Like for example, when a larger orbiting body captures a smaller orbiting body with enough energy to eventually eject its self.
3:49 I think I missed it a few seconds before. But it may still surprise me. At least that's more than 1 second before the end of the video.
