Chaos Volley Got Nerfed! - V Rising Balance Patch Review

Hello everybody! A new Hotfix just went live with several Balance changes. Some of them are quite good, but there are definitely some things I still want to see changed.
The most relevant changes happened to Chaos Volley, Arctic Leap, Axes, Horse Combat, Scholar Blood and the Spear Q burst combo.

    Overall I'm fine with the changes but I'm just a bit worried about the change to Chaos Barrier. I believe the reason Chaos Barrier was popular wasn't that it was too strong, but mostly because a lot of other barriers/counters were just not that good. Nerfing it mostly means that people are going to use even more shields in my opinion, and as you said, I think it should be punishing to hit a barrier or a counter

    Yeah I do think Frost Barrier was really good already. I actually prefered it over the Chaos one. But I don't think the nerf was necessary either way

    @@Teldo Yeah Frost Barrier was the only other one who felt worth taking (maybe Trance as well), hopefully Frost Barrier won't be the only counter being used now

    @@jijigri9224 Oh I had the idea of swapping Shadowbolt and Pestilence's spell schools and giving Shadowbolt dmg amplify and Pestilence healing. I think that would make so much more sense for these abilities

    I feel the same as you regarding a lot of things, namely: - axes still being too strong, although maces are a lot better now - unholy and illusion trees are a bit too weak imo - I really don't understand the sword nerfs, I only used this weapon to cut my flowers since it was already not good Edit: also it's good to have you back, I used to watch your Battlerite videos back in the day! Keep it up

    good video as usual, I agree with most the things your saying. Have some more tech for you again today on this one though. If you cancel merc charge with left ctrl instead of x. O boy is it a amazziiingggg ult for baiting. Been using it since the leap nerf and the amount of ults/ defensives i see in reaction to just merc charge ctrl canceling is insane. Also its not the worst in a fight either if the only time u really throw it out is to escape or off a guaranteed set up being incap/freeze it does solid dmg and sets up for the spear q. unfortunately the stuns a little short for any delayed spell into spear q but idk i enjoy the mind games of it!

    Yeah I already learned about this yesterday. Thanks for sharing anyway. I can see the value, but you can do the same with the blood ult too. By the way you can combo Scythe E into Spear Q into merc stun. It's enormous damage!

    I'd like to see big changes made to primary attacks in general, they slow you down too much for too little payoff. No matter what loadout you're playing, everybody always wants to rely on cooldowns and make distance after spending theirs which does feel good but there's no spotting a window where you could stick to the target because of that movement speed slow and low primary damage. This is even more true for the mace I feel. I love the new chunky hit, but it still has too much overlap with the axe and too little ability damage when everything revolves around them, but it even has the worst primary attacks of any weapon. Mathematically using the numbers in game for swing time the three hit combo has noticably worse DPS than everything else, while also slowing you to a stop for each swing. Spear at least has a good reach and highest auto DPS tradeoff for staying completely still, while axe seems to have the second highest DPS on the primary 3 hit combo and the movement speed and attack speed buff from Q to make it not feel terrible to use for a moment. If they want the Mace E to stay low on damage as a utility ability, which I'd like thematically, then a hefty buff to primary damage would be great, and changes to movement speed for the weapons in general. On the topic of Ward of the Damned and the lack of barrier options, I think an overhaul to the skeleton minions would be apt. They are the same as the tutorial minions, designed to be slow and easy to walk out of their telegraphed attacks. I don't think that player summoned minions should be that easy to avoid, it's not like NPCs go out of their way to avoid them anyway. I still think Corpse Explosion should summon some skeleton minions too for that cool necromancy feel, could make some use of that snare too spawning right next to a slowed victim. Maybe they should interact with the damage amp even, prioritising it or moving faster towards victims, something to build around like the Frost school has.

    Yeah I'd be curious what the game would feel like if primary attacks were slightly better. Mace basic attack is definitely atrocious and needs some love. Regarding summons: I think they're great for PvE, but in PvP they'll either be op or useless. I believe summons generally are kinda toxic. Mosquito works pretty well in PvP, but I cannot imagine the Spectral Warrior working in its current iteration. You can just walk away from it, making it useless. But if you had to use defensive cooldowns on it, it'd be way too powerful. I like the idea of summoning some skellies with Corpse Explosion. It needs something else for sure to make it usable. And making summons run faster towards dmg amped targets would add some interesting syngergy between skills, which we only really see with Frost right now. It'd be great if they added more synergies. Ward of the Damned is at least quite good in PvE right now. Especially cause summons deal "true dmg" disregarding gear level differences in PvE.

    @@Teldo Yeah I agree with you on the pets in PvP. I am biased in that regard leaning towards pet classes in a few games, but I know that them being autonomous is generally too simple in PvP and frustrating, even if they only perform alright. I think there's a good middle ground where they can be a strong deterrent and obstruction as punishment for being caught by another mechanic, or require further control in the form of a recast so the user still requires skill expression (like Fallen Angel recast for the dash would be pretty cool). I just get really good vibes from them, like playing Unholy DK in WoW, transforming the permanent ghoul pet, commanding its gap closer and stun. Mosquito is in a really good spot in that regard for this game type, I think.

    I like using Ward of the Damned with Purgatory in PVE, this way I can heal my minions, slow down the enemies and damage them all at once. I agree that those skeletons may need a buff thoughm but then the ability might be OP in PVE (it's already pretty useful). I think in general it's fine to have certain abilities that are good in PVE and others in PVP, it's a nice balance

    It's mouse 4 (a side button on the mouse) by default. You can reassign the hotkey in the settings

    Horse lording a V blood is still possible so the change didn't effect damage as much on that front. I am not sure of PvP damage. One of the ones i liked was the mirror strike cast time. I often run mirror strike as ult on PvE its pretty cool for managing large mob crowds. i think they illusion abilities need a little balancing altho they are quite interesting in-terms of strategic play. If they balance physical damage and magical to be similar illusion abilities will shine for sure then. Don't have much PvP experience with this game to test them out myself. Sword one was one even i don't see why it needed nerfing lol. Axes are OP for sure still.

    I am sorry to disappoint, but I think spectral assassin is not very good in PvP. It's very easy to avoid the attack by just walking :/ To be fair I have only tried it in duels and maybe it could work a bit better in chaotic open world fights. I will investigate that for you and if it works I may make a video about it. Other than that I hope they improve the ability so I can showcase it in the future

    Your review is basically identical to what I was thinking about all of these. Don't really get the sword nerfs, especially when Spear is essentially the same idea, and they brought the E in line with Sword E in terms of cast time... not sure what the purpose was there.

    @@Teldo yeah same. I like the idea of not being completely pushed into one or 2 playstyles (for the most part), and I'm interested to see how things play out. Personally I think veil of Bones has potential, but it isn't there yet. The wind up is just WAYYYYY too long and telegraphed. You dash, they see the green, you swing, they know it's coming, the projectile comes out like .25 seconds later, PLENTY of time to react to it, and then the travel time is just slow... If you actually manage to hit someone with it, then there's def potential for some crazy damage, but also... How did you manage to hit someone with it lol...

    @@Teldo It feels pretty cool with the crossbow, they practically travel together. It almost feels laggy when it comes from a melee weapon though. I'm pretty excited about the buff though, I think it already has a good niche with the sheer distance it travels.

    I think a lot of these nerfs are head scratchers. Shockwave for example was already underwhelming why are they nerfing it? Chaos volley is still decent and you didn’t buff the other abilities enough for them to be more viable. Next time don’t need abilities and weapons make the other stronger only Mace is super good right now though

    Sword nerfs have to be PvE balance which is sadge fav weapon for sure. Artic Lance does A LOT of damage to castles during siege or decaying ones thanks to 2 splinters always hitting. Slashers Q damage buff is because it's really only used for Iframe but now there is more reason to use it as intended which was for quick in and out damage.

    Sword being nerfed for PvE? I didn't know people used it for PvE. Scythe + Crossbow seem the best choice for PvE. But maybe you're right. Never thought of using Arctic Lance for Sieging. Gotta try that out, thanks. I do think Slashers Q already dealt respectable damage and was quite good for poking. I don't think the buff was necessary, but it honestly doesn't really matter that much.

    @@Teldo yeah sword E then Q was a great way to pick off ranged npcs and good to create distance from melee npcs to do so. Sword E was also nice for ranged npcs to stick on top of them. Sword Q was pretty decent aoe damage specially paired with certain spells. It's just the only explanation I could think of as to why the nerf. Slasher Q is just more rewarding now to land instead of only useing it as an . I personally think slasher Q does little damage specially if you only land part of the hit. Yeah before patch in a decaying base one icelance with 2 splinters hitting does 198 damage making it the second most hard hitting ability when hitting a base pre balance patch.

    Well, the sword nerf came out of the blue and makes it an absolute trash tier weapon now. At least with X-bow you could have some uses in boss fights. Axes are quite allright in my opinion, maybe lower E damage slightly more, so it becomes more of a utility spell and maybe... I feel they are missing out a great chance of better synergy with the axe weapon as a go to for brute with some minor changes, making it a "berserker" weapon. The mace changes are welcome, still it does not set itself apart that much as a clunky heavy hitter and battlefield controller. Slasher buff to Q is quite welcome and even with 2.5 seconds on E you should be fine. I would even accept 2 seconds incap if they raised the mobility aspect of E. Otherwise I am quite happy with the nerfs and buffs, but some skills clearly need a little rework to ever find a place in players arsenal....

    Honestly man, i just want more content. I've got the soul shards and a good castle, servants are all equipped, no one attempts a raid at me, my friends stopped playing already and all i do is some world pvp. This is the second server i play and its the same shit. I need new stuff

    I hear you. That's the single biggest thing they gotta fix. I just keep restarting on new servers, but it would be much nicer if servers stayed alive and you had regular endgame pvp.

    It's not perfect but for a small hotfix balance patch it's good enough. Axe nerf has definitely improved the game. They'll do more

    ive seen alot of people whining over that nerf on the discord and i dont get it. If you need something clearly overpowered and broken to play the game maybe you shouldnt play. i greatly appreciate the buffs and nerfs for more diversity in playstyles

    Yeah I don't think Chaos Volley is as bad as people make it out to be. It was definitely too strong and I think they nerfed it appropriately. However Axes are a lot more problematic. Hope they adjust them more with their next balance patch!
