Hildegarde von Bingen is a saint. She was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict because of her extensive writings apart from her music, which is also extensive. She wrote books of devotional exercises for the convent that she supervised, and in addition, she wrote books on the healing powers of plants from her botanic studies. She was a gem of learning in the so-called Dark Ages.

She was a rare human being, who was political, spiritual, intellectual, curious, supremely musical, shunned possessions, and was most importantly, a record keeper. Assigning the label of intelligent to an individual that does not write stuff down, can be called into question.
