Chant II Animatic

Фильм және анимация

Warning: slight flashes near the end
In which Hades is more resistor than conductor :^]
So I've had the script for this for way too long. Took advantage of my current Hadestown mood to make it a reality! I picked this version for the Persephone bit and more raw vibe if you will.
------
Music: "Chant II" from Hadestown Original Cast Recording: • Chant II (Live)
------
Notes:
- Tried to keep this continuous with my other two animatics - "How Long", and "Wait For Me II"
- (except Hermes, I could not in good conscience keep Andre with such a different voice - let's pretend he's a shapeshifter as in the myths :P)
- More colour motifs WOOOOOO
- My style has become minimally-legible and I'm okay with that. Would want to try more details one of these days though...
- managed to shoehorn in a bit about proving Hades' words wrong - however tangentially... serves him right, the showoff XD
-----
Hope ya'll are having a good November!

I love how when Persephone thinks back to how things used to be the Underworld looked much more like the traditional underworld, a mysterious natural cave and Persephone loved it. A nice contrast to how it has evolved into a dystopian nightmare with high walls, overly decadent palaces, and zombie like workers toiling their lives away

The more crazed Hades gets, the more he seems to control electricity... something supposed to be associated with his brother Zeus instead, and we all know what Zeus is like. A son of Kronos remains a son of Kronos, I suppose.

I like the image that Persephone sees the beauty of the underworld. Where others see darkness and death, Persephone, the goddess of nature, sees veins of gold that light up the under world. It was like a mystical world she had never seen. Hades showed her through the darkness. That when she fell for the God of the Underworld. And Persephone brought spring to Hades. Greenery, life, things he couldn't have as lord of the underworld.

I love how in all your Hadestown animatics it's clear that Hermes, Hades, and Persephone aren't entirely human, Hermes flitting in and out of reality in his lines, Hades in this literally sparking with electricity, Persephone's anger taking on a force of nature, it's really great imagery that reminds the viewer of their status as Gods.

Your comment surprised me! I've been trying to treat them as humans for the most part (one could argue they don't have any power) as a neat lil logic puzzle, and to create contrast for when they do. I'm very glad you like that detail!

God I love how you pictured Hades talking down at Orpheus through his microphone and gradually getting more and more crazed as his anger builds and drops, builds and drops, while Persephone is talking on the level of Eurydice, trying to explain why she chose this life and how it’s warped her from the bright eyed, smooth faced young girl into a world weary drunken woman who can’t control her domain anymore. Personally, I don't mind Persephone's verse being cut, but I do wish they'd include the "He said he'd shelter us, he said he'd harbor me, he said we'd build them up and the walls would set us free" somewhere in the worker's chorus in the new Chant II (although I also love the new worker's chorus). This is because I love suicidal!Eurydice though and wish they'd make it more explicit.

I like the detail of, at first Persephone looks like she’s being chained, or restrained by the workers, only for it to be revealed that they were stopping her from accidentally going into a crevice, then helping her cross. I imagine it’s a responsibility they share, making sure the boss’s wife doesn’t get hurt. She’s gone 6 months per year, so makes sense for the landscape to change without her knowledge

awiaojlskfld I WILL FOREVER BE SALTY THEY CUT PERSEPHONE'S VERSE IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOMENTS IN THE MUSICAL just;;;; the bitterness the spite in her voice when she sings of the present falling away as she sings about their past and the hope and the tenderness of the young lovers from a lifetime ago and just that moment of quiet peaceful strings and piano and beauty in the midst of the rest of the conflict of the song and how that simple beauty in its purest form lives on in Orpheus's lalalalalala's because that's what he's singing about that's what epic iii culminates into except we hear that from Orpheus's take on Hades' perspective and just hearing it here from Persephone hits different because she's the one who hasn't lost sight of what their love *was* even if she drowns herself in bottles trying to numb it all and it just speaks to the power of love (their love, Orpheus's song) that in her moment of remembering their love as it was, the drumbeats and heavier piano chords from chant itself die away, like the world's just stopped for a moment or has been changed like it is with Orpheus's song and I COULD GO ON AND ON aghhhh but the point of this ramble is just. you capture all the emotions just so perfectly in your art, especially for Persephone's part I can't quite articulate it there's just something about your art that speaks and listens to the song and makes the song's lyrics and message its own and just. yeah. (yes i cried this is a masterpiece)

One thing I recognized is how Hades refers to Orpheus as son vs how Persephone refers to Eurydice as sister and how it mirrors how they saw their early years. Hades calls him son bc that’s how he sees his former self, a young boy unaware of how the world works. Persephone calls her sister bc she sees her former self as an equal, woman who fell for man who succumbed to his own hubris.

I love~ 0:45 - He is so confident in his abilities *wheezes* 0:49 - 0:50 - I love him looking down at the petals while saying that *vibrates* 0:53 - He chugged that glass o' wine so fast KEK 0:55 - "always slipping from your grasp" and suddenly Eurydice is nowhere to be found while poor Orpheus is being ganged up LOL. He is so surprised, shocked because ofc not two seconds ago he had the Workers' full attention and delight 1:00 - Persephone! Jumping stairs is dangerous!! 1:04 - I see that chain dangling from his pants you ain't slick Hades! 1:07 - HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH IMAGERY AND TIMING ONCE AGAIN GLORIOUS 1:09 - AND THEN IT SWITCHES TO THE CHAINS ACTUALLY BEING WORKERS! And you think to yourself "oh shit?? are they seriously turning on their Queen?? Oh shit oh shit" 1:14 - BUT THEN! Syke, they're helping. And the fucking contrast between what Hades is saying and meaning, and what's happening is just *chef kiss* 1:15 - *sobs* I love her waving thanks and the working tipping their hat SO PRECIOUS 1:17 - *BREATHES* She's rolling her wedding ring around her finger (i choose to believe she's doing this to comfort herself ;-; because Hades is saying "bind her with a golden band" and that just implies such negative conotations but she stILL loves him and doesn't want to see their marriage as some kind cage but its becoming one and shE DOESN'T WANT THAT DAMN IT), WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME SEAL WHY. 1:18 - And ofc HE'S taking the elevator *wheezes* 1:25 - PAIN. Once more they are being split apart and Orpheus is reaching out but Eurydice has already lowkey lost hope and walking back into the mines while wearing such a wretched expression *FLIPS* 1:32 - Once again! The golden lightning! Wonderful symbolism on what it means *sobs* Shows that even before Orpheus showed up things were already brewing (not to mention Hades already spoke about having "riots to quell" to Eurydice beforehand) 1:47 - mMMMMM the contrast between how they act in the speaksay vs now when Hades is involved is just DELICIOUS. It's easy to act all tough when the boss isn't in sight ain't that right~? 1:52 - PERSEPHONEEEE! This, this part of the song. Why did they cut out Persephone having a part in chant II I will never know but *this part* I just LOVE the parallels between Orpheus/Hades and Eurydice/Persephone. Just the younger generation meeting an older more jaded one is just SUCH GOOD STUFF 1:54 - LMFAO EURYDICE'S FACE!! SHE'S LIKE "What is this woman talking about...??" 1:57 - Yea I'd be hella mad too if I had to sing about the wonderful past while JUST coming out of an argument with my stubborn pig-headed husband. Also AGAIN with your wonderful delightful expressions and *ursula voice* bODY LANGUAAAGE 2:01 - Her face screams "sucks don't it? But EH WHAT CAN YA DO" so resigned *wheezes* At least when it comes to herself but the SECOND she speaks about Eurydice she turns into overprotective mama bear mode 2:07 - OH MAMA?? OH MAMA!!!! *WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZES* Yeah Persephone can be scary as fuck! That comforting hand on the shoulder is suddenly squeezing a little too tight. And speaking of that, I love how..erratic Persephone's emotions are HJBFHJBGFDJ One second she's trynna be soft and sweet and the next she's exploding like a volcano. Delicious. -also shows credence to Hades saying 'hot and cold' BUT TO BE FAIR you both are like that towards each other, constant push and pull you two are a MESS Hades- 2:15 - *SLAPS DESK* PUTTING A PIN ON THIS TOO FOR A HOT SECOND 2:20 - hHHHHHHH THE SUDDEN BRIGHTNESS AAAA CONVEY EMOTIONS WONDERFULLY 2:29 - She's so flattered but also thinking "what a fucking dork." 2:40 - *covers eyes* OH NOES THIS IS TOO NSFW! Jokes aside, this is so FUCKING SOFT! THIS IS SO SOFT. The fact the carnation is the onLY COLORED THING *FLIPS* Also I love Persephone's voice so goddamn much 2:44 - tHE FACT THE COLOR IS A NICE LIL SOFT BLUE RATHER THAN THE DEPRESSING ASS GREY *FLAILS* THE UNDERGROUND USED TO FEEL LIKE HOOOOOOME 2:45 - LORD LOOK AT HER. LOOK AT HER FACE. LOOK AT THOSE EYES! WIDE OPEN SPARKLING AND NOT THE DEAD THINGS WE SEE TODAY. LOOK AT THEM I CAN'T SHE'S SO PRECIOUS 2:46 - *violently takes one pin out* SEE THIS! The the golden glow in the walls! All minerals and shit no doubt. (which sadly are now either mined out to hell and back or covered by metal metal and more metal of factories and mines and what not so you can't see them anymore ;-;) Makes the caves light up and gives 'em this nice glow, makes it look so GODDAMN PRETTY AND LOOK AT THE GLOW REFLECTING IN HER EYES *SOBS* AND THEN HADES LOOK AT HOW SOFT HE IS! LOOK AT THAT LOVESTRUCK SMILE AND HOW HAPPY HE IS THAT SHE'S HAPPY AND HE'S SO HAPPY HE CAN MAKE HER HAPPY AND HE'S SO DAMN HAPPY SHE LIKES IT *FLIPS* 2:49 - 2:50 - I hate you. I hate you, I hate you i hate you i hate i hate i HATE *AAAAAAAAAAAAA* SHE'S SO PRECIOUS IM GONNA CRY AND THEN YOU DARE DO THAT IMMEDIATE SWITCH FROM THEN TO NOW AND SHOW ME HOW BITTER AND ANGRY SHE'S BECOME HOW DAAAAAAAAAAARE *sobs in a corner* I love contrast, you know I do. But this contrast between Young and Old Persephone is too GUT WRETCHING. It's too much, your expressions are too much...im taking so much emotional damage, i need a healer plz 2:54 - Eurydice will remember this. She's so precious ;-; The backwards glance, she feels so bad about it but also she has her own shit to deal with so she doesn't really chase after Persephone whose stomping out back towards the main event:tm: 3:15 - *takes the other pin out* AYYYYY. They are GEARING UP! Look at this one! LOOK AT THE VISIBLE EYES BABY. They are DONE being just shades, done being nobodies, done kEEPING THEIR HEAD LOW 3:19 - AND THE SECOND THEY HAVE EYES TO SEE, HADES IS THERE TO COMPLETELY OBLIDERATE AND BLIND THEM BACK INTO SUBMISSION AND JUST LIKE THAT THE EYES ARE LOST ONCE AGAIN AND THE HEADS ARE LOWERED 3:29 - GAH she's so, jesus, she's too powerful BHGFDBHJGF Her mental is too powerful for me to comprehend but alas can't seem to find her way through the massive wall of bodies and towards Orpheus. 3:35 - EURYDICE IN HIS JACKET. Cold of winter, lovely lovely 3:37 - *snorts* puns~ 3:46 - The glorious buildup approaches. The electricity at his fingertips *vibrates* 3:45 - 4:16 - SO, GODDAMN, GLORIOUS! Showing the inner workings of all the machinery, THE GLORIOUS RED CLOCK! Orpheus is looking on wide eyed and shaking in his boots. The electricity that comes from Hades himself showing he's the heart of it all, the one who makes everything MOVE AND THEN IT JUST BLOWS UP BECAUSE HE *CAN* SO HE WILL. His eyes glow teal (which is *chef kiss* delicious), his hair goes all over the place because he's loosing his danm cool and the screen goes WHITE then the glorious RED and Orpheus can scarcely believe what just happened 4:20 - --blaze it-- I love him just casually leaning against the rail as if he DIDN'T just blow a methaphorical and quite literal fuse (*WHEEZES* IM SO HAPPY WITH THIS PUN) ALSO WAIT A FUCKING MINUTE!!! HIS TRENCHCOAT GOT COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY DEMOLISHED AND DESTROYED AFTER HE YELLED "ELECTRIC CITY" I CAN'T! OH MY GOOOOOOOD THE LENGTHS THIS MAN GOES *WHEEZES* That's such an amazing detail oh MY *GOD* SEAL you're amazing 4:28 - 4:29 - SO YOU *CAN* TAKE THE STAIRS! You just choose not to you lazy bum. But also, yes King, YES! You jump over that rail without a problem, show that poor mortal that you are indeed, still a fucking god and can survive that fall, you go. And yesss yesss the perfection that is the "ONE. TWO. THREE" part of this song! I'm so here for it 4:34 - You are so slick aren't you Hades? I love it, he just kicks the shovel into his hand like a goddamn skateboard and then twirls it around. I love this so much more than him just sitting on a chair...Just, getting a shovel showing he's about to bury this mortal boy. 4:36 - "Mmm yes mighty fine shovel this one. Mighty fine for mur...murDER" 4:41 - Poor baby ;-; His poor lyre is in justas bad shape as him 4:43 - He looks like such a zombie apocalypse survivor...That is not a bad thing at all. 4:51 - *breathes* Faces corresponding to how they sing. You match them perfectly. Finally seeing that yes indeed, he is a pretty old man, that lonesome eye and that frown. He is TIRED indeed 4:53 - And then he's BEYOND BADASS. Absolutely adore this still to death. Applause go to you TOO!

I've been listening to the Broadway version for so long I nearly forgot how great the original cast recording is! This was so great! also on a somewhat related note, anyone feel like the OCR and the Broadway have like, different setting places? cuz like Hermes is played kinda like more country in the OCR and Andre plays Hermes in more of like a Cajun way? Idk if its just their accents or anything but it like, really brings a different feel to each soundtrack.

Not so much different places but different interpretations of the character. To quote the casting person: "I think a great example of that specific to Hadestown is the role of Hermes, who is played by André De Shields. Hermes in the early table reads and I believe the New York Theatre production downtown, which also then consequently had a cast recording, was played by Chris Sullivan. And Chris Sullivan is a completely different type of human and actor and storyteller than André De Shields. The obvious big, huge difference between them is, one is in their early 40s and is a white guy, and the other is an African American man who is many decades older. But the texture that each of those men brought to the story is incredibly different. It tells a very different story, having a middle-aged, white, blue-collar Hermes narrating the story, versus having an African American, regal, otherwordly man in his 70s playing the role." www.vox.com/culture/2019/5/28/18635512/hadestown-casting-directors-broadway-tonys

Fun theme I like in thoughts, Hades power of electricity, pure lightning. The eldest god of Greeks, Zeus was seen as supreme, so Hades having the strength of the power over the city shows he now commands more power than he was seen with. The wrath and heavenly power he commands.

There are a whole bunch of amazing things people have pointed out in the comments, but the part that really got me was at 3:31 just after the "Women come and women go" line. It shows two, empty, wine glasses. Hades and Persephone are both hollowed. I love they symbolism! P.S. equally important was the fact that Hades had two glasses on his desk in the first place, just in case Persephone would show up. P.P.S. I'm watching these animatics of yours and I wish I found them sooner; I love them

This was wonderful. I take it you prefer the 2016 to the 2019 version because of the Persephone solo? I prefer the 2019 version because I think that the worker's chorus lines in 2019 more effectively develop the pro-labor theme of the musical than the lines in 2016 version, but I will admit that I miss the Persephone solo & I LOVE your animation of her as 'young girl' entranced by the beauty of the underworld.

Thank you! You're right! I had a strong image for persephone's part, also I love hades' laugh at the beginning, and the effect of the mic blowing out at 'electric city'. That being said, I do really really love the worker's lyrics in 2019. A lot more hope and reason there, beautiful

I am always so impressed by your animatics, and this one especially impresses me! I love the lighting and the use of color in this one, the shift to brighter colors for the background occasionally as well as your use of red. More than anything i love the movement, and how your shots are so dynamic! I rarely see that in animatics and i continue to lament how underrated you are! Also i was surprised to see you do one of the original recording, but super happy because i forgot just how good the original version of the musical was! Thanks for reintroducing that to me, i’ll probably spend tomorrow listening to the whole album in order. Again, i love your animatics, and i hope you have a nice day!
