I use those channellocks but I'm a plumber. Mostly what I use them for is round stuff. If you want to grip a nut or bolt I think Knipex would definitely be better.
I have a complete 1/4" set of SK USA sockets, that I still use, and look like new, about 30 years ago. Love them. Good job, CP.
Those are meant for pipe, not nuts. They work PERFECT for plumbing. My go to is the flat jaws for the versatility but sometimes you NEED the V jaws.
I remember when you could walk into a k mart and get USA craftsman. I would be begging my mom to load the cart with craftsman tools for me to take home. I feel sorry for our youth i really do. I was just watching a Simpsons episode where bart wanted to get a job like homers but a musical scene came up and said the upper class greed burned down our middle class and we can’t get good jobs anymore. A parody that they even teach children on tv who is still in denial?
I love the small channel lock slip joint pliers, and my old S*K 1/4 inch ratchet also the wrenches I like to shop flea markets and yard sales too I am having a hard time replacing my Channel lock long nose that I cracked the handle on (did not realize how strong my grip actually was for a scrawny guy ) 😊 A lesson my Father taught me that you get what you pay for I was really upset about the $ 4 harbor freight garbage pinching my fingers so I paid $40 dollars for a pair of Klein and do not regret it one bit I am also fond of Green lee tools
I know a plumber who carries a GL6 . You would NOT believe all the work he can do with just those little pliers . I bought a set . LOVE them - it's the angLe of the pliers head that helps .
Got a good one for ya the rigid pipe wrench still made in USA 🇺🇸
I have many channellocks and they have served me well over the years. That being said I think there's better out there. I like the knipex that I finally broke down and purchased. I like that if you slip off, you don't get your hands pinched. I kinda like the auto adjusting pliers that years ago mac tools came out with, and now knipex has. They are my first go too pliers for 98% of the time. Keep up the great tool videos.

Those pair of chanolocks have missed the boat
I have a 1/2 SK socket set that is about 40 years old. Still being used today. I also have a set of wrenches that I use every day in the shop. They are fully polish and are just really nice to use, though I have bent the 1/4 wrench and broke a 3/8. I would buy more SK if I knew they were made in America.
The Doyle’s are great for lesser used tools. I went Doyle for my 16” because I RARELY need them and didn’t wanna spend money on something I don’t use much.
Hi CP! It's your twin. I always had a soft spot for SK. The SK truck would come to the shop. Those look very nice. You know I appreciate you always. Take care Bro! 😊🐶🐕

When I heard the news that SK had been sold to China I was not happy. I will say that the socket set you showed actually looks impressive. The socket rail looks like a nice piece. The sockets are stamped rather than laser etched. The biggest question is the material they are made from and how will they hold up over time.

Thanks I agree surprised me
Man my instructor has some SK USA made stuff and they are super nice! I have tried to find some USA SK. But it’s hit and miss and often times it’s not specific to where exactly the product was manufactured
You can use the wayback machine to see old versions of the product page. Hopefully it saved that edit.
I bought that 3 piece channel lock set a few years ago and after trying to use them I threw them in my box where they have been since. I work maintenance so channel locks are used quit a bit but not that set. I bought a couple of the new style of channel locks also and the handles are to beefy. They don’t fit good in my hands so they are also just sitting in my box. I bought a 3/8” deepwell SAE socket set from SK and I love them. I love the socket rail they came on. I assumed these was made in the US and after I bought them I put them in my box not paying attention about the sockets saying made in the US. Dang I’m upset about that. I thought SK was still made right here in the US.
Some big ole clunky ass channel locks, those are so twenty years ago😅, all mine made it to the gardening shed when I work on my sprinkler system, I don’t want to get my knipex all dirty and rusty when I forget them in the yard and it rains.
When you were showing the tips of the jaws and the Doyle was off I was thinking the channel lock was not perfect either. That being said I picked up a pair of knipex and the tips of the jaws were never finished. They had sharp stuff protruding out of the ends of the jaws. I was going to return them but didn't want to pay for return shipping. I don't know that quality is the top of any companies lists anymore. That being said I have not worn-out or broken any of my channel lock pliers and I have some even older Dimond brand that are still going strong. I think they got bought out by another company because I have not seen them anywhere in a long time.
I used to use channel locks but I got tired of the grips constantly coming off. I switched to the Milwaukee brand that have the comfort grip on half the handle. I have used them daily for over a year now and still like them. I prefer knipex put don’t have very many of them yet. I am Millwright so my preference are probably different from most. Great videos CP keep up the great work!
I have been turning wrenches for OVER 30 years and i will say that like you CP I have a old pair of Channel Lock Pliers , but that could be that my father was a tool and die maker ..... My grandfather was a tool and die maker as well and my grandfather knew his tools , hell if he needed a tool and could not get it he would make it ! I will say i have "Never" heard of Doyle but since you have brought them up i will look into what tools they make, offer and sell ... Thank for the info CP !!! U DA MAN !!!
Thanks CP everyone loves channel lock love seeing the videos
I would say those first channellocks are more for pipe trades and electricians for ridged conduit.
I've been using the Griplock pliers for a couple months now and they've been great. Got the two pac. I like to use them over my Knipex because they are a bit easier and faster to use, especially with one hand.
Thanks for your honest opinion brother. Thanks for sharing. Keep the videos coming. Hope all is well. Hope you have an incredible weekend. Much love and RESPECT

I bought a bunch of Channel locks a few years ago, hoping to upgrade my HF ones with made in America. They work, but aren't amazing. I am looking at Klien for now on.
Good Evening Fellow Toolhaulics, Friends, & CP SUPPORTERS ❤️: Mr. Chad you hit it out of the park again. The Channel Lock pliers are a huge disappointment. The company really cut back on the quality, machining, + the actual loose fitment of the jaws. I have several 58 year old CRAPSMAN adjustable pliers that exhibit much tighter jaw lockup, better finishing + final machining etc. Chad thank you for another wonderful video sir, + my best to you & Henry. TMP from N.J.
When I started out in the trade ( late 80s 😮) there was an independent tool truck that sold SK USA. I bought some stuff way back when and still use it today. I always shy away from off shore stuff because warranty sucks ( yes even big names like snappy break). Warranty is king. As I am getting close to retirement now I feel sorry for young techs starting out as good quality tools are very expensive. Well more expensive than they were. I like to look at a new tool in the amount of hours work it costs to purchase. A case in point. I have a snappy ratchet I bought in the early 90s that cost about 3-31/2 hours pay now the equivalent costs about 5+ hours of work. Getting hard for the new guys. Sorry I went a little off topic CP. Btw I have channel locks as old as yours and still use them.
Not gonna lie, the socket rail caught my eye. Could use a magnet though.

Thanks for information on SK & those Channel locks ..🇺🇸🔥🔧
Nice job Chad ☕☕ 😋 . I use pliers as little as possible, however here in a couple days I'm picking up a couple pair (7" & 9") of the original Craftsman Robo-Grips adjustable pliers. They came out before vice grips and hold the cheap knockoffs of them came out and they're hella anice 😇 . I'm guessing you have some yourself but in case you don't I would jump on some quick like bunny 🤣 ..
I have that same set from channel lock and they are my go to tools I do have others that are pretty good, but the channel locks never let me down I like them they’re durable. I’ve never had a problem with them at all,,,,,, just sayin
Thank you for your review. I am on a fixed income. I appreciate high quality, but my use is limited and I do not need Snap On levels all of the time. I like their rails.

No problem, anything I can help with!!
The GripLocks came out back in i think the 90s? as a more economical model. They definitely hit the mark on the economical part because even for being US-made they cost just peanuts, but that comes with tradeoffs. Very minimal machining work is done, the grooves are actually part of the forging rather than being cut in, and they dont bother with shining them up and completely removing the forge flashing, etc. They went with what they describe as a "Euro profile" in the jaw there. They're decent for what they are and definitely for the low price, but obviously you won't get as much. That being said, yes theres absolutely room for improvement. Igarashi also has pump pliers that are economized through similar means, but they managed to toss in a more substantial set of forged-in grooves at least. Though they just use a bolt and nut rather than the Permalock fastener, which the Permalock is more expensive as theres a process they do involving a set of dies to hand-tune each one. If you want to check them out for yourself, they're rhe LGR-250 (they have a couple other sizes too), also sold under the name G MONSTER. They can also be found rebranded as Fujiya Kurokin, which includes the trademark color scheme and some comfort grips rather than bare metal.
A little disappointed in the operation of the slides of the CL's? They look nice, but can tell they will be slippy slippy? I hate to say it, but after getting the 16" Cobra's, I have never picked up my CL 16" pliers much? I have a 24" Rigid and a 18" Proto pipe wrenches, if the Cobra's can't get the job done? The Cobra's have the same style jaws, as the new CL's do? Good job, CP.
It is my understanding that the Amazon marketed tools are the Chinese/Taiwan products. From the SK site you can purchase the USA made products. The prices reflect that Big Time. Greatstar already makes several lines of 'Consumer' grade products so it makes sense to use the SK name to push more of that material through to consumers. The PA facility shared with Shop Vac has actually become an SK facility as Shop Vac production got moved over seas. (trying to remember my source on that... To Google)... I will add this, The SK site has many 'sets' of tools still not available, and the 'USA' stamping is conspicuously removed from pictures of tools. Does not seem like a commitment to USA manufacturing to me. Either way, I think I personally will leave SK to others and move on to Wright, Proto, Wilde, some Tekton... you get my drift.

Hello again CP Thank you for another Great Video 👍
Great video. SK looks decent for the price
Forget Chinese made sockets, plenty of good Taiwanese made sockets out there by Capri, Tekton, and Gearwrench
Channellock unlike so many other companies is privately held. An American company not being used by public shareholders as a get rich scheme can still survive and even thrive. Not saying they're perfect but they're doing pretty well overall...........Klein is another company that's privately held, makes most of their tools in the US and is still going strong after 150+ years.
I have the channellock and knipex. I think channellock are the best of the old style or at least one of the best. knipex are in a league of their own.
I personally probably won't buy China SK. I am, however, on the hunt for old stock USA made SK tools. Since the great star purchase of SK I have turned to Proto / Wright/Snapon.
Sk used to be a stepchild to snap on and Mac. Good tools but not in the snap-on league. Now that they are made overseas you might as well buy Gearwrench. No thanks sk

This is an interesting video dude! I just compared old Craftsman USA to new Craftsman sockets. They are making the socket wall thickness thinner and removing strength from them. SK being made overseas actually added material to them and came up with a much nicer rail than anything SK has had in the past lol. If you're going to make the move to overseas manufacturing at least do a decent job of it, looks like "SK" is trying. Is SuperChrome still a part of their marketing? I grew up using mainly craftsman and channellock. But moreover, all the tools we used in the shop were us made from brands like SK, Stanley, Husky, Blackhawk, KD, etc. I was very disappointed when SK was taken over, just like when craftsman was moved overseas. Channellock has been doing a great job holding out but i agree this set is hardly worth the price. Personally if im buying chinese tools its from harbor freight and if im buying taiwanese its from tekton. SK usa i will still get but thats it.
there is a better feel when using channelocks vs all others. They are better in every way. Mac now makes theirs in china as does matco yet charges the same price as snap on.....span on makes great usa pliers but they cost a furtune. Go with Channellocks.

I like to buy 🇺🇸 tools and the difference in price for Doyle is not that much less than Channellock pliers the job you may help save may be your own and SK consumer grade I hope it becomes a harbor freight killer

Cp, how do those new SK's compare to the made in Taiwan Tekton chromes? I really like the Tekton's I have, but I'm not a professional. I bought those channel locks years ago when they were new, I felt like they were an improvement over the original design, then I discovered Knipex. The whole sk thing upsets me since I started buying them (there’s a local hardware store with an aisle of sk tools). Now I’m thinking I may have to wave down a Mac or snap on truck since I was looking at the prices and while they are higher it’s not really that insane (I do mobile commercial/industrial hvac, so the truck wouldn’t come to me). What’s the best way to get in touch with a local rep? Also do they offer better deals for cash/card payment? I do not want to open a line of credit
Superb attention to detail in your comparisons of these tools. Some may try to duplicate your channel but their failure is always swift. There is NO duplicate to the king- CP. 👑🔧❤️
I love the content CP keep it coming! Agreed, Doyle is an odd brand, I found the smaller cheaper stuff like the needle nose and regular slip joint pliers was much better then I expected... but then when I tried the larger tongue and groove the quality really dropped off, I might have to go back and try out the Channel Lock brand now, I know they aren't as good as in the past, but after seeing your vid I can tell they are much better then the Doyle and USA made steel too. Thanks again man.
The groove locks have been around at least 10 years at this point, and I don't like them. I didn't even consider the poor joint engagement, I just didn't like the way they grip. I think the V jaw version of the standard line is better, but I'm waiting for them to introduce a Big Azz pair of V jaws and a Big Azz pair of nutbusters. As for doyle, I really don't care about the quality I'm just not going to buy them. If you can't afford Channelllock, you should probably be buying all your tools used from garage sales. ( the secondary market is great though ). Channellock isn't that expensive, and they are a great American manufacturer who needs our support. It's not just about the jobs because we all know Harbor freight employs a ton of Americans, it's about supporting our industry of manufacturing. We can't stand on our own if we don't make things here and rely solely on imports. Btw great star has said they plan to have American made tools, but I also know that Harry J Epsteins has decided to stop carrying S•K at this point because they're sceptical. If they don't think they can count on the tools to be made here ( like they could up and decide to go all China at any moment ) theyre better off just dropping them. I sure hope they continue to have tools made here, especially the ratchets. I know a lot of people don't like roundheads, but I do and theirs are buttery smooth. They were basically the only more affordable option left for finer toothed American made ratchets. Proto has their premium pear head ratchets that are certainly more affordable than the truck brands and cheaper than the S•K LP80, but the only other affordable ratchets besides the old school 100 year old PROTO pear heads are WRIGHT and WILLIAMS. I love the WRIGHT contour grip, and the 3/8 up all have a dual position dual pawl mechanism but the tooth count still isn't as fine as it could be.

@CPthetooladdict so what's that a more affordable line the heritage series from sk to be like matco adv cornwell bluepower etc.
SK has moved equipment into the Shop Vac facility here where I am which they also bought. The parking lot is full, cranes are there often, and their jockey trucks are moving trailers more now then they ever have in shop vac times between all the warehouses. I don't have any inside contacts though at the moment, but I drive by it 4 times a week. My wife was interviewed there for a warehouse coordinator and at that time they were setting up equipment in most of the building which was previously used for storage(I actually applied there years ago to be a machinist but world economics ruined that).............For some reason they didn't fill the position so maybe the equipment setup is experiencing growing pains, but when she was there, they were DEFINITELY going to make stuff here. Interestingly enough, she is now employed just up the street at another manufacturer...............So we aren't quite shipping out everything to China yet, but god help us if something goes wrong in the world. The knowledge to building things here is leaving the earth every day.
There are many better choices than Channellocks. Once I started using other brands I never use my Channellocks anymore. They just sit in the toolbox. The best thing about it is that you won’t pinch your hand when if the pliers slip off.

So from a metallurgical standpoint, “virgin” steel really shouldn’t matter. The alloy itself is either right or it’s wrong. Though make sure it doesn’t have trace amounts of stuff in it like Tellurium (see the Beretta 92 slide failures that happened a number of years ago). God knows you and I can’t change the world. Warren Buffett tried when he bought a shirt company called Berkshire Hathaway and he couldn’t fight the trend of textile manufacturing going overseas. And that’s why Berkshire Hathaway is now an investment entity lol I have a new SK ratchet here and I like it. It’s marked USA and it’s nicely made. The direction switch is stiffer than hell but otherwise, I’m impressed all things considered. So, you made me think…. Consider the quality of tools we see from those foreign countries. What are THEY using to build their structures and products? It would be interesting to see.
@CPthetooladdict

What do you mean virgin steel shouldn't matter? It absolutely matters that the integrity of the steel is not comprised in any way, so that is absolutely a baseless statement.
@gtcam723
7 күн бұрын
@@CPthetooladdict think about it. Steel is an alloy of various elements with iron. Those metals all had to get smelted from their state where they’re mixed into whatever rock or soil they were part of to begin with. That required processing to achieve the desired purity of the iron, vanadium, chromium, carbon, molydenum, etc. It didn’t just come out of the ground as steel. That same processing is required to recycle that material. The difference is in the refining and the alloying. It’s not “virgin” steel that makes Snap On tools special, it’s their specific alloys (something Henckels and Victorinox knives are also both great at) and how they heat treat them. That latter bit is particularly important. And they are amazing at it. Basically, It’s a marketing term that’s used that I think could very much be improved on. Not unlike when some company says “aerospace aluminum”. Cool. What alloy? What hardness?

It's pretty obvious that you actually don't understand metallurgy or the composition of said metallurgy. So, this conversation is really pointless. I really don't have time to argue with people who don't understand what they're talking about. I'm sorry.
