I've got my grandfather's original first gen pair of Champion Dearment 420 channellocks from 1933 and they still work great. I've also got the 16" and a pair of p Those larger parrot heads. They work fine when I've used them, but I have noticed the same issue with those V groove parrot heads. Yes the Dearment family who still owns the company today was the originator of this design, they became known for their Channellock pliers and took it as the new name for their company around 1955. Btw they do carry a lifetime warranty , but they will not warranty them if you try to sharpen the blade / anvils or the teeth.

That is good to hear about their warranty and of course if you modify the tool it would void the warranty and that's completely normal and acceptable. As far as I know Craftsman was the only company that had a effectively unlimited condition warranty. My experience with Craftsman at Sears and what is such a shame now is the fact that rather than trying to get them to replace an abused tool I would just walk in and ask if it's within the realm of their warranty and they would say absolutely and for some reason they would track and ring up all the tools they replace I think as a sales tool to show you how much money the warranty has saved you and why you need to buy more Craftsman tools. Just think Sears could have spun off Craftsman and opened independent tool stores and they would have been the Harbor Freight.

I loved the channel lock branded pliers but when a guy at work was using the Doyle's from harbor freight and told me they worked the same and felt the same I quit buying channel lock brand and bought into Doyle and now I have a few pairs of their pliers and I can't notice a difference other than the handle color.. and actually the Doyle 20 inch pliers that I have, seem to work alot better than the channel lock 480s (20inch) pliers that I have.. of course I will keep using my channel lock brand 410s and some others but I carry Doyle's everyday and I beat the crap outta them and they always work.. and they are lifetime guaranteed so thats a plus... people say that channel lock brand pliers are also but I've never been able to return a pair of channel locks back.. ill stick with the Doyle's and be happy paying for half of what the other brands cost..

They can still rest but around 10 years ago they start plastic cutting their tools and that helped a lot also higher grades of Steel do not rust as badly as low-grade mild steel does it's one way to tell if you are dealing with that Quality Steel is the fact that it just doesn't get the cancerous flaky rust like cast iron & mild Steel

The jaws on a pair of Channel-lock tongue and groove pliers hit the serrations on water pump clamp nuts perfectly, the teeth mesh mechanically and the tip of the handles fit through the hole in the center of the nuts hence the name water pump pliers. Catus, I did a comparison of the newer GL series to the Knipex Alligators. I’ve used them a bunch around the plant and while they don’t look as stout as the old 400 series, they hold up just fine

Awesome tool review. Just want to defend the griplock channellock as they work perfectly for our pipes in New zealand, but in saying that, our closest standard pipe size at 20mm is just slightly larger than your 3/4". Just a note for any kiwis or Aussies watching this vid. Keep up the great content.

..I looked at the Doyles and they looked good, but they seem overpriced for Chicom pliers, and I would feel shitty buying them when for just a few more bucks I can buy Channelocks and support the American economy...not that much price difference. Not like the huge price difference for, say, Snap-On, Mac, etc.....Now, that being said, I do have Knipex Alligator and Cobra pliers as well as Channelocks, pricey but overall better than the Channelocks, not USA made but German, somehow that doesn't bother me as much as buying Chicom....

Yes Harbor Freight really is experimenting with higher price and better quality tools I wouldn't be surprised if these flyers weren't made by Channellock. And German tools are generally equivalent to US tools very expensive high-end German tools are easily as good as any of the best American tools

I use my GL grip lock channel locks on nuts and bolts.. thats all that I've found they work on.. I don't use them to loosen up really tight bolts because they will strip the bolt or nuts but I will use them when I have to tighten a nut and bolt.. I use the grip locks to hold the bolt and a wrench to tighten the nut.. I just use them to hold the bolt in place and let the wrench or socket do the work..

@@CatusMaximus =) a lot of my money has been spent from watching your video's! Btw were you a shop teacher? My HS didnt have shop but we had a engineering lab with a CNC, pneumatics, electrical test board with a bunch of switches n things, a video lab, and then also a plastic injection mold machine!! My school opened in 2004-2005 school year, they spent 250k on the astro turf field so actual education classes got a boost in the budget for those things. I did miss the wood and metal in the old middle school. The rule of being able to go back into the shop from the main classroom was knowing the names of all the tools and machines.

I'll do a quick review and comparison of Doyle versus channel lock. Doyle's are about half the price and about 60% to 70% the build quality they're reasonable for what Harbor Freight charges but obviously are not a strong as an equivalent sized Channellock.

CJ5 you make an excellent point there is different economics involve when you're just a weekend warrior versus and on-site professional it is much easier to justify higher quality and more expensive tools simply for the fact that if a doyle were to break on-site you would lose a lot of money running around getting replacement pliers just to finish the job versus just spending another 20 bucks to get a set that would not have broken in the first place.

Catus Maximus I've used all different brands, and my experience is that they don't grip the pipe properly, kinda like the crappy pair next to the 460s did on the pipe or the handle is opened too much, hard to explain but I hope you get what I'm saying, where the Channellocks seem to be set so you can get a good squeeze on the pipe. I am very curious about the Doyles in that aspect. I am just gonna have to grab a couple pairs this Friday and throw them in my box and put em thru the wringer. I'll get back to ya on how they worked because I'm very curious now...especially after seeing the 20" Doyle review

The ones next to the 19" (at 4:08) are junk. The style on the far right (at 3:07) and the 460s I have used nearly every day for 30 plus years and I swear by them. The smooth jaw I use on chrome nuts, say on commercial urinals and toilets. They have loosened and tightened more threaded pipe than you could imagine lol. All mine are stamped and don't have the laser etching. I have used all different types of slip joints, and in my opinion, ChannelLocks work, for me, the best. Great video

I have any number of channel lock pliers and I got to say almost every last one of them but maybe two pairs out of about 20 all when you try to get them in that right position don't seem to want to go it seems like something's bent on the inside of the tool somewhere and it looks perfectly fine. That is what is extremely annoying about channel locks. And I've used other people's channel locks that have that same thing going on so it's not just me.

I've got most of them too, including the model they call "Big Azz" (480) which are 20". Actually I don't need that big sized pliers, but it's nice to have it...as a tool addict... Model 410 is actually not for pipe. It's designed to operate rusted and rounded nuts and bolts. That's why Channellock calls them "nutbuster". I dislike the last design too. You should try the Knipex Cobras. They''ve got much more steps, so you can compensate that problem with the pipe.

  • @CatusMaximus

Yes I love the large size pliers as well. One thing to remember is often times you can use too large of a tool to do smaller size work but if you have too small of a tool you cannot do larger size work at all. I realize now that they are advertised as nut busting pliers but they work so well on pipe I don't want to damage the teeth using them on Bolts, Plus I have a variety of other methods and tools to remove fasteners.

If nothing helps, a nut splitter will do it: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/Mutternsprenger_0610.jpg If you're using this tool only the nut will be destroyed, the screw thread of the fastener will remain intact.

  • @CatusMaximus

Yes indeed I even have one of those somewhere but to tell you the truth I have never used it or maybe once most times the nuts are in places where such a huge tool just doesn't fit. The best nut splitter I've ever used is a Dremel with a small cut off wheel and a chisel

  • @Marcel_Germann

    @Marcel_Germann

    6 жыл бұрын

Yes, that's the alternative. But you'll have to be careful not to ruin the threads. If you're ruining the thread of a threaded stud on an engine this will become very expensive or painful to replace or repair it.

I usually prefer USA made tools, but most of what knipex makes is considerably better. Like the pliers wrench, nothing compares in the category, but you also pay for it by a factor of 2. But for the best, paying 50$ isn't that bad if you use it daily.

Idk how you are getting knipex to slip. I can get things considerably tighter with cobras than I can with channel lock. I’ve broken loose many things with knipex my channel locks would slip on. Namely on round surfaces. My knipex have actually saved several brake jobs that wrenches stripped the rusty bleeder or brake line fitting. The cobras were able to dig in and get it loose. Same thing with removing wires on a starter where the stud was spinning I was able to hold the stud with my knipex and loosen the nut with a wrench
