Cassette Tapes and Tape Decks is for the old head hobbyists who's got some spare dosh....I have loads of top classic recorded tapes and blanks one's and like you I ain't getting caught up in any silly ebay prices for any audio tapes...your channel as always been a great channel for classic memories with audio tapes...you have a great Xmas and good for you on the lifestyle change.

Nice to see an update vid from you. "I'm still a man, before you start anything" actually gave me a good laugh :D The view on the state of cassettes is very realistic, even I've stopped stashing lots or trying to find any sealed tapes at a price that's not absurd.

I am 15 years old. And more than 1 year ago i found my dads old box of cassette tapes. I was like. Wow.. cassette tapes.. interesting. I played every single one in a sharp boombox. I didnt knew that mutch about tapes yet.. so i started looking your video's. i just like the many types and brands you can collect. And it spins! I went a few times to the cyclestore where they sold cassettes for only €0.50 cents. No matter what brand or type. I even found a metal tape for €0.50. i als managed to get a AIWA XK-007 exelia for €150 on marktplaats (Dutch ebay idea..) after replacing the belts it worked! And Wow cassettes sound amazing.. but even without sound ill be enjoyed by the machines to play a cassette. I like your video's. Thanks for the great reviews. You gave me great tips.. "a good deck makes the difference"

Im trying.. other people think why cassette tapes when i can listen to Spotify or KZread.. a lot of cassette players are broken and must be repaired. I like to buy decks and repair them. But i dont see a lot of people doing that much work to listen to cassettes.

I have a very similar story to you. Found my fathers old aiwa, and listened to all the tapes he had. Instantly fell in love with cassettes, and this channel taught me so much of what I know now. Its not just nostalgia, there is a certain magic to the tactile feeling of playing and recording cassettes.@@sussebeest

It's so cool! I've recently gotten my hands on a dual cassette player which is in need of some TLC, which I have every intention of fixing up to the best of my capabilities. I'm fresh out of luck if I need to solder, though.

I'm very glad to have found your cassette videos Tony, they're a superb resource. 👍to leaving them up. I got keen on getting back into using cassettes just before you started making these videos, but I didn't know you were doing them. My interest waned a bit when I realised I didn't really want to go through the faff of calibrating a 2 head deck for all the different tapes I might use, and I didn't fancy the 3 head Nakamichi prices at the time. Ha! If only I could buy a CR-7 at 2018 prices now! What I've learned from you, in the space of a matter of days, is just how useful a 3 head deck is if you want to make a good recording. Like you, I first got into tapes in the early '80s and I'm pleased to say I've still got all the ones I made back then. And even though I picked up 4 nice 2 head decks on eBay back in 2018 (planning to try a few, and keep my favourite), I only really appreciated how good tapes can sound for the first time this week. And you did that. Your videos showed me the impact of tweaking the bias settings on a 3 head, which prompted me to get my Dad's 3 head Yamaha out of its box, and record a high quality source on a D90. And I was absolutely gobsmacked. What I love about cassette is that when I play some physical media, I pay attention. It's like putting on some vinyl; I get to know the music better, and I get a stronger emotional response than I do when streaming, or playing CDs (CDs are great, but they're nowhere near as tactile as cassettes or LPs - for me, there's no emotional attachment with a CD). While binge-watching your stuff this week I've realised that rather than curate my tape collection as a homage to the music that I liked in my early teens, I can re-record the music I still like (lots of them sound crap, but now I know it was the equipment and re-recording will transform them), and re-use cassettes whose bands I don't listen to. I'm really excited about that last part; exploring new music by recording it to tape and then listening to it over and over will teach me far more than browsing through an online catalogue and clicking "Play", before losing attention and moving on to something else. So thank you. I owe you a few beers.

Continue to pass on your passion to us, we are cassette geeks and we keep alive this audio medium that is so pleasant to listen to.

The journey was always the best. Now, towards the end, we can look back and remember. I own tapes you sold and recorded on for RMR. A few pure chromes found a new home thanks to your store. Glad cassette comeback and RMR survived in some way here in North America. Mirrorgate Media is one I am keeping a good eye on to buy some tapes or disc's. May you do well in your new life, you have inspired a portion of my generation, me included. To work with cassettes in this ever enclosing era of streaming. They have been my out for paying lots of money for dozens of albums. Well this was a wall of text, I'll end this by saying tank you for allowing me to aquire tapes with ease.

Thank you Tony for everything you are doing to keep this format alive. In the 90's and early 2000s for us in Eastern Europe (Romania in my case) RAKS was the TDK of the poor. 😀 I still have almost 300 recorded RAKS different models like SD-X, ED-SX, HD-XI, ED-X, SD-S.

I just bought a 2004 used car, with 40,000 miles on it. The most exciting thing about it? It still has the original OEM cassette player! I can't wait to listen to my cassette collection on the road! Whether cassettes ever make an actual comeback or not, I'll always be a cassette fan! ALWAYS!

I used to love buying NOS Type 2 . I wanted to stock up for my 4 track recorders . I'm so glad I started before the "comeback" . The resellers got info that there was a demand for cassettes and prices skyrocketed . Type 2 used to be $3 to $5 and now I'm seeing $7 to $10 + . The general sellers at flea markets are even asking $5 to $7+ . And who knows how the tape was stored . It was fun when cassettes were cheap cause IMO they are a cool analog source of sound . From the cheap to the type 4 that rival CD's . I always liked recording my music on a 4 track and getting that sound . Even 4 tracks prices got out of hand . I can see paying fair retail if the machine has been serviced ,but folks are asking top dollar for untested . This is why the cassette comeback is probably done . Cost too much money . Finding places to fix decks is becoming impossible . Especially if you live nowhere close to a major city .

Great video, i have come to the same conclusion that a good type 1 cassette in a good deck is hard to beat. I've always struggles with ageing 3 head decks. I've made my peace with 'feature rich' 2 headers, Yam KX-530, Nak CD2, Nak DR8, Technics RS-B655, all great sounding reliable amd fairly cheap.

Good to see you back Tony. Thankfully I have a full drawer of as new TDK AR to keep me going probably for the rest of my life. Speaking of decks though, I have a fairly basic Yamaha deck, which sounds about as good as my cds. So proof that you don't need top level decks for good sound.

Awesome score! I do have the BASF Ferro Extra I cassette with the J-card which was original with the cassette itself was Saehan made, the later BASF Ferro Extra cassette has different wrapper, different J-card and the cassette itself is the same. The TDK DS-X was the US version of AR, but I used to have it back in the day.

I don’t owned the Nakamichi deck, because they’re too expensive. I only have my Technics RS-B11W cassette deck and still works, except the recording was running way too fast, but I had to hit the side to get it running to normal speed.

Hi Tony, first of all thanks for the great videos! I have followed them with great interest. Great that you have worked hard on yourself and that you are making progress! And now hold on!! I have been a big fan of cassettes since the 1970s. I still use cassettes even in the car. But unfortunately, as you indicate, new decks are no longer being made and will never happen again, unfortunately. Fortunately, I still have my 6 Pioneer decks, 3x CTW806D, CT-670D, all toys compared to my fully serviced Pioneer CT-900S haha. For a while now I have 2 PCM/WAV recorders from Tascam (SD-20m) and Denon DN300MKII. Well, honestly... they sound much better than cassettes, are easier to record and edit, etc... but it's still not the same as tape. I wish you wonderful holidays and a very healthy 2024! I hope that a new video will be posted every now and then. Greetings Erik from the Netherlands.

It’s because of you that I got back into cassettes as a hobby, and now have a massive collection! It’s sad when you finally come to the realisation that cassettes are not making as bigger comeback as vinyl, but I think in the back of my mind I always knew that would be the case. Not that I'm mad but I never thought you'd sell the CR-7 or the Revox. Just because you seemed to like them a lot (and used them a lot in the videos). I don't know what decks like this sell for but I can understand your motivation in selling them now and not having them around until they break and loose massively in value. We'll never know, but it could have been decades of use before they break. Or one of them might break tomorrow. Only four minutes in but I'm listening. Hi Tony congrats on the lifestyle changes, you're looking good! I agree the cassette comeback was never going to happen like vinyl because vinyl never completely lost the player and disc manufacturers or DJs. Thank you for your part in keeping cassettes alive. I suspect cassette will join 78rpm shellac in being a small but dedicated community. All the best.

I felt back some 4-5 years ago when you were bringing Cassette Comeback to us, that it would take someone like Sony to invest millions to get the format up and running again. We all got carried away somewhat, but to be honest - it's no loss, nothing probably ever returns in the same way. Totally understand about the Naks, that’s something beyond what I can afford unless I sell a kidney, I’m still grateful to have a technics RS-b555 the technics decks are some of the best playback decks for recorded tapes, at an affordable price

The RS-B555 is a great direct drive deck for playback and archiving, I also have one. If you come across a 3-head version for a reasonable price, like RS-BX626, don't hesitate to buy it. It makes so much more fun and so much better results recording on a 3-head deck. I only miss the level calibration and cal tone generator features from my BX626, that's why I usually use my Sony TC-K511S for recording. I also have a TC-K711S but that is waiting for a repair. I wouldn't really recommend the Sony 511 because its mechanism very often develops a fault that is practically unrepairable without designing and machining new parts for it, namely the plastic housing of the capstan bearing cracks and the bearing becomes loose. The 711 lacks this issue as the bearings have brass housing in that one, and overall the mechanism is a lot better, although also a lot tougher to service, even a belt replacement takes a lot of fiddley work on it.

I still love cassettes and thiis channel - congrats on the positive life changes!

Hey there, I'm only 15 years old and obviously I wasn't born in time to be a part of the cassette age but I've just been getting into it, and your channel has been a very valuable source for me to learn and try it out for myself. We had WX909 while I was growing up and i ended up finding one NOS on rBay some years ago. It needed work despite being NOS, but its one of the few decks in my collection that is always working.

Over the last two years, I was scooping up what I could while the 'market was soft'. But then I began to realize...it wasn't coming back. Nothing's really moving. I'm finding deals way to easily. I mean, rare models will retain their value for sure...but once the rest of the kids give up on the format fad, it's back to just a few few of us old lunatics left. Right now, I'm scooping up as much nos tape as I can, because once it's gone, it's gone....and the ones out there are starting to deteriorate. I just had to toss out 20 1990 Sony HF 60's (2 boxes of 10). The tape was completely shot. 1990 is pretty young for Sony tape...or any tape really. So...we are really just gambling with little time left. Tony, you're right. The cassette comeback never happened.

You have brought back some forgotten joy to many people here. I was cassette enthusiast for majority of my life but since old gear is slowly dying out and good new one is not available anymore i have phased out this hobby. Still have some NOS cassettes , just for old time sake. I am happy that almost everyone is selling new vinyl nowadays. Even older ones are reissued. At least something to have with a ´´soul´´. I'm glad I was able to buy NOS Chrome tapes at reasonable price around 3-4 years back. Nowadays, they cost just as much as rare Metal tapes back then.

I recently discovered your channel and have been enjoying your laidback style of presentation and recalling the tapes from back when I started in retail. I've recently bought a quality refurbished Sony cassette deck and some tapes! Also discovered an original TDK SA90 (c1990's) in a box in the loft which I recorded at the time using a Marantz CD63MKIISE, Arcam Alpha 5 Amp and a Yamaha KX580 ( I think speakers at the time were a pair of Monitor Audio, cannot remember the model though). Tony because of you (and Techmoan) I've got back into tapes and taping, culminating in the purchase of my beloved entry-level TEAC V-16 (boxed, new old stock) last March. Your videos are inspiring to say the least and you've taught me so much. I'm now the repository for my mates who have old / new tapes they wanna' get rid of. On Xmas eve I was gifted a box of 12 sealed TDK AR90s and to be honest I feel like a millionaire ! Good luck and best wishes for 2024.

I've tried Supertape off and on through the years because I used to live right by a Radio Shack and even new the tape was often tight and just wouldn't track well. I've always liked TDK for their shells and Maxell for their formulations. That Fuji actually was impressive for the age but you had to bump up the sensitivity. And to be honest, I think you saturated the TDK a little. But that thing was coming back hotter by about 2db. Used to love the MA-XG 90s. Very Much Thanks to the other Tony and to Paul for sending those tapes.

I don't need a top of the line Revox or a Nakamichi dragon! I want that Aiwa deck! I wish I could find one. That Fuji tape sounded absolutely stunning!

Certainly the Nakamichi Dragon would be risky to hold on to given it's one of a kind heads and complex tape transport mech. However, I don't think I will get rid of my other Nakamichi decks. There are still a lot of Nakamichi experts around the U.S. and Europe.That and I tend to work on my own stuff. I could not imagine owning more than a few decks if I couldn't do maintenance myself. After almost 10 years into the cassette tape renaissance, no one has produced a competent transport, Record Playback heads or stellar type I or II new tapes. A true comeback likely won't happen. It's a lot easier to build a turntable than a tape deck, that and high level turntables never went out of production. No matter. I have all the equipment and NOS tapes I could ever use in 5 lifetimes. I still buy NOS tapes from time to time. I just purchased 7 NOS Sony UX-Pro 90 tapes last week. They weren't exactly cheap but given that I don't record every single day, I can splurge once every month or two.

And also, nice setup of cassette decks and CD’s. I only have my Technics RS-B11W from 1985 and it still works, except Deck A works for recording, but sometimes had speed issues since it was playing too fast due to loose connection with wire.

woah ive been watching your videos ever since it first came out. i and im in my 40s and still have my cassettes and spend $300 and change for a JVC TDW 317 big deck had that since in the late 90s and I still use it and its playable and its sounds good still. i can relate watching them videos keep it up mate. lovin it!!

I brought every RMR album except retro nouveau vol.2 which I missed out on, all apart from 4 are minidiscs and listened to them with an mz-r37 mostly on my commute to my previous job which I really didn't like. Since then I've changed jobs and quite happy with where I am now. I have brought a few tapes from your eBay store including 4 captures which are still my fav modern type 1. Looking into getting their R2R stuff next. Just saying yours and others music released on your label really helped me through 2 years of agony as something to look forward to at the end of the day, now my R37 is taking a well deserved rest as I now have a minidisc player in my car and in the workshop stereo 😂...

i still have my Revox B 215 and will be keeping it but i can see your point about the Naks far to complicated and expensive to keep serviced compared to the Revox Direct Drive, easy to clean and it had been re-caped and had new pinch rollers fitted and compared to what a Dragon would cost a bargain 😊

I don’t owned a Revox deck, it’s too expensive. I also have my Technics RS-B11W cassette deck along with two shoebox cassette recorders including my Audiotronics 148B cassette recorder which was under “Classette” which were used in schools and my Superscope Storyteller cassette player from the 1970’s and it was the only cassette player which was playback only, and it was a novelty, because it was made for kids. This was usually came with the Superscope Storyteller book and cassette tapes where you can get them back in the 1970’s.

How can you say cassettes aren't making a comeback? Today I can go online and I am spoilt for choice of vintage NOS cassettes and even restored decks. People can enjoy to this day the charm of the analog media with vintage and modern music, digital mastered and lossless files. The first medium capable of empowering the masses of doing so. So if you feel you can't continue to lose money on making videos, rest assured it wasn't for nothing. Cassettes have definitely come back and they're here to stay. I respect your choices, your videos have been inspirational to many.

I guess the "comeback" in my mind would have encapsulated new decks with new tech and new tape formulations. How good would they have sounded...

I'm with you on the assets turning into liabilities. my local go-to shop won't work on Nak Dragons anymore since parts simply aren't available anymore. I lost my sony TC-K670 due to worn load gear with no replacement (other than donor machine or heroic efforts) and I can only hope that my replacement aiwa doesn't fail with a similar stupid fate. it's literally impossible to purchase new equipment that can meet the specs of 30+ year old gear, and the media itself is in a similar state for 20+ years. a cassette comeback to me requires 1) newly manufactured gear that meets or exceeds 30+ year old golden age decks, including Dolby-compatible NR. 2) newly manufactured media that meets or exceeds 20+ year old tapes, including type II and type IV. I understand the economics against both, but it seems like there's got to be someone rich enough out there to make #1 happen, even if it's a bespoke bragging conversation piece. can JRF still manufacture a head? are suitable motors still available? have the various Dolby standards been fully reverse-engineered? (B, C, S, and HX pro are all out of patent now, yes?)

One of my favorite things to do is drag some awful tape across a 3 header and recording something that still sounds listenable, finding it years later and being very surprised.
