Loved the American Football ident. Ahhh, the good old days!!

Agreed, many good memories of the channel 4 idents, this one stands out the most. Bring back the blocks and bring back the Crystal Maze!

The first one makes me think of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace starting.

All of these idents were recorded during the early morning hours of 3rd November 2007, specifically from 1:15am to 5:00am. Ident number 1: a fall forms into many pieces which do a 360 before re-emerging into the 4 Ident number 2: a ton of little pieces come together to form a 4 Ident number 3: a 4 collapses as another collapsed 4 follows which emerges into a 4 Ident number 4: a ton of pieces come from every side of the compass to form a 4 Ident number 5: the 4 gets hit by a football which turns it into the coloured flag of Italy Ident number 4: some text from a different language comes down and 2 4s sort of bow to it. Ident number 5: a American Football player has a body which has the coloured blocks of the 4

I remember seeing the 1st ident before "Jim Henson's The Hoobs" started in 2008!

All they did for channel 4’s 35th anniversary (2017) was create a whole new ident set

That's even great when it's in widescreen.

They did nothing for Channel 4's 30th birthday (2012) Why? :(

I remember the American footie one!!!!

Love the Sumo one! C4 showing its inventiveness with that and other sports, but never the racing strangly!!

C4 Birthday Was 1 Day After Chinese New Year

They should use this ident EVERY november 2nd! In fact I remember this ident from my early youth and when these were shown for C4 at 25 my sis (who's 11) said 'Eh? whats that crap?' I replied with, 'Channel 4's first logo. Better than the crap ones they show now' :P

@JASpiring I think they got the idea off CENTRAL as CENTRAL used blocks for their "Cake" Ident and CENTRAL was way ahead of its times both programming and visual idents

Next time Channel 4 show the blocks ident, it will be to mark the passing of David Dundas, composer of Fourscore.

@JASpiring But was that within the actual titles rather than the ident? Not 'nit pickin' because the fact remains that Channel 4 were the most inventive with idents whilst they used the blocks.

Bring them back for the 40th Four, no balls.

They did bring it back because of the new 1980 drama and the death of person who created channel 4 ident.

They did nothing again for Channel 4's 35th birthday (2017) Why? :(

Actually they did, the current ident set (featuring a silver metal giant composed of the C4 blocks) was released for that reason

@MikeyManchester Alas Central CAKE never come in to effect until 1986, so Central would have gotten the idea of CH4, the idents come in 1982.

Given these are in 16:9 and the originals in 4:3, I wonder if they cropped the originals or went to the bother of re-creating each.

Looks cropped to me. There was normally more black space above and below the 4.

Does anyone know whether the ident at 0:46 was one of the original idents from 1982, or was it introduced later on?

Cool. This was the piunnacle of 1980s computer graphics. I liked how the '4' fragments and then reforms, from one perspective point. But there again I was born in 1990 (and this ident set was aired back then, in rotation).

The original version (ie the 4:3 version, not this 16:9 version from the 25th anniversary) was used from launch in 1982.

It was never known as Channel bore. It was the best channel because it was innovative

The press lampooned it during its initial months on air, and used headlines such as Channel Bore, Channel Snore, Channel Swore (for the ripe language it broadcast in shows like Brookside.). The low viewing figures across the channel were used as a stick to beat it with, deliberately missing the point that it was aimed at attracting a minority audience and was achieving the goal very well.

there was something about channel 4 in the 1980s, innovative, off the base and radical..gone now..

I just saw the most deplorable advert by Channel 4 of new steps , two men joining in a Royal Marriage, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, what about the divine right of national sovereignty chosen by god and blessed by the church let no man be joined to another man in matrimony the book of Deuteronomy , even if it’s a joke it is still wrong suggestion, wrong, wrong, in theory the sovereign marriages must be between man and woman , where are the offspring’s from the Crown supposed to come from,? a card box in the cupboard, be sensible FOR THE LOVE OF ALL WHAT IS GOOD PLESASE, PLESASE STOP, not funny, it, si disturbing, I am born raised and educated here in the Britain and United Kingdom I have the right to speak of it and I speak of it because there needs to be a parameter of reason even in jokes, offensive to my mind and wrong to my religious reasoning, just wrong Royal Wedding for same sex, no sense of religious understanding well offensive.
