I’ve had my D74 for almost a year. This vid provided some of the best info I’ve seen. Thank you. Maybe a vid on how to program XRF reflectors into the memories? I’ve got RT and the Kenwood program and haven’t been able to program any of the reflectors other than REF’s easily.

Thank you for your reply. If you search on my channel, you will find another D74 video where I demonstrate how to store up to 200 of your favorite link commands in your Kenwood THD74. I show you how to store link commands to both repeaters and reflectors and how to quickly access them. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any further questions!

You’re a lifesaver. I stumbled across your video looking to solve another problem. I had no idea this was possible. Way more convenient than picking up the smartphone to change repeaters or reflectors. Thanks so much for this video!

Thank you, Josh! I am glad it helped. The DR mode and its functions are what make your radio the command center! I love my Openspot 2, but the manual tells you to program a DV simplex frequency in the radio! Sure it easier and quicker to get on the air that way, but you lose command and control features. Thanks for watching!

I have been doing that since I got my Icom 31A. Looks like the control of the 31, 51, 5100 and 74 pretty much the same (and that is a good thing) Love your videos.

Thank you! Unfortunately Openspot manuals suggest DV Simplex to setup the radio and although it works, it forces hams to become dashboard dependent to change reflectors.

Nether did I. If you have a D74 and an Openspot, I later discovered the Kenwood will let you program the RPT1 and RPT2 with the word DIRECT in the RPT1 and RPT2 fields of the DR memory. Unfortunately the Icom does not allow that. You can program an Icom DR memory as DV Simplex with no RPT1 and RPT2 info to control the Openspot, but you lose the gateway CQ option. I have later videos addressing these option and there possible shortcomings. Also it gets interesting with Icoms because if you have multiple hotspots for DStar, you jave to change each additional hotspot to a different RPT1 module to store your own callsign multiple times. I use K9WLW B for my Pi-star. K9WLW D for my Openspot 2, and K9WLW C for my Openspot 3.

@@k9wlwradio309 I don’t have the 74. I had an earlier version before the 72. Audio was so tinny I couldn’t stand using it. I think the 31, ft70 and my Alinco’s sound great. I am going to have listen to the 74 live a bit although you tubers say it sounds great. I would like to get one. Wish they still did OP 2’s. I don’t do radio in the car much anymore.

@@lanceriffle4841 I love DStar. I have a ID 31, ID 51, and a D74. I will definitely grab the new ID 52 when it comes out! The 74 has sweet transmit and receive audio with the stock speaker and microphone. I like the Icoms for different reasons. They are sturdier and better in the field. The Kenwood I keep at home. The 51 is my hamfest radio. But the Anytone 878 is a great DMR radio. With hotspots, handhelds totally rule! I love the Openspot 2, but the 3 is awesome with the crossmoding!

@@shaneramos1428 hit the QS button in the lower right. Select the type of radio. (If you are using DStar radio, select DStar) next select the network to connect to. I would select REF/XRF. In the server field type REF030 or REF001.in the module field type C. Hit the connect button. See if the Openspot connects to server. It should have a green flash message appear in the lower left that display connection. The radio speaker should announce you are connected to the reflector.

On the Kenwood go to menu 611. Hit the enter key. Highlight any one of the 5 available slots. Hit the button right below where it says edit on the screen once. It takes you to where you can type in letters and numbers and special characters. Type in what you want with the DTMF buttons or VFO knob. When done. Hit the enter key. Then quick PTT to get out of the menu. You are done!

Following along and at 4:31 you say "Number one, press the down arrow." When I do, nothing happens. I will be looking for some sort of configuration that prevents that from happening, but most of the easy-peasy configurations depend on that and I sure can't get to it. Help! EDIT: Never mind. I found out it's press AND HOLD the down arrow. Silly moi.

Set the hotspot frequency in the radio to plus or minus offset with a 0.00 shift. It won’t work with a Pi Star as simplex.
