Changing Pad Sewing Tutorial for Beginners // DIY Baby Shower Gift // Grab and Go Changing Pad

Ойын-сауық

Holach!
How to sew a changing pad.
In this video I will show you how to sew a changing pad with a pocket for diapers and wipes. It is a slow paced tutorial for beginner sewers to follow. A great gift to sew together for a baby shower gift or for your new baby.
Quick measurement overview (not all directions):
Need Outer fabric (I used cotton), linning fabric (I used PUL fabric), stabilizer (I used lightweight) , optional is padding (I didn’t use padding because I had done my daughters with padding and it took up too much room in my diaper bag. This is not supposed to serve as a place to lay baby for anything other than to quickly change the baby, a quick slim easy grab and go. Trust me from experience do it without the padding. However, I am all for figuring out life through experience so you can still add the padding in if you are inspired to do so.)
Type of closure : Tying it together (cut strap longer than 20”), Hook and Loop (or velcro), button, snaps (that’s what I used)
Start with a 38" height x 20" wide rectangle.
Cut out 14” height by 4.5” wide from the bottom corner of the rectangle, repeat for opposite side only on the bottom.
Should be left with 11” wide by 14” height on the bottom that is centered on the bottom.
My strap is 5.5” wide x 20” length. The length is more important then the width so be sure to get that 20” if you are following my measurements.

    This is the perfect gift for a new mom! I'm learning to sew from many videos online and I like yours best and feel like I will be able to make this. I like the addition of the diaper pouch, the closure options (I love my KAM snaps, too, so will be using those) and your thoroughness. I cannot wait to make. Just ordered the PUL fabric from Etsy. Most of all, so glad you answered someone's question about why you hadn't filled it with fleece inside. I had been thinking I'd add that to mine but after reading your answer, I will not. Thanks for the time and effort to put this video out there for all of us.

    This is probably the best explained video I've seen for this. Thank you. I'll be making this very soon. Question for you. Do you think it would be okay to sew a cotton batting to the cotton fabric before putting it all together? Would that make it to bulky? Just for some extra padding.

    Great I'm so happy I could help if you post it on IG I would love to see it #OlgaLingLove. I bought this fabric at Joann Fabric and Craft Store. The best answer is yes it is cloth and plastic but the cloth does not absorb it'll make it so much better for baby then the straight plastic I used for my first round for when I had a baby...officially a toddler now. Thanks for subscribing I appreciate it.

    Thanks for this- very good video- everything clear & very helpful. I am making a couple for baby shower gifts. I am curious as to why you would not use the 38" across the width of the fabric which is 44" as then you would be cutting only 20" length. I see your fabric was directional so maybe that's why. I'm going to try mine across the width & see what happens. I'm always thinking of going into production. Your baby is so gorgeous.

  • @OlgaLing

    @OlgaLing

    Thank you for watching and commenting. For this project I did use just a typical cotton fabric, may have been a decent quilting fabric. I used the PUL fabric for side the baby will be on, so it will not absorb. Glad it could help you.

    @@OlgaLing I'm curious about the same thing. Shouldn't the PUL be on the OUTSIDE so if the baby pees (expecting a boy) whatever you are changing him on doesn't get soaked? I'm thinking if the PUL is on the INSIDE, it will pool up and all the baby's clothes will get soaked. Does this make sense? This is my first baby so I really don't know what I'm doing.

  • @OlgaLing

    @OlgaLing

    4 жыл бұрын

    Honestly when a baby pees as you are changing them it will get on everything anyway. For a boy your face, his face, just going to happen at least once. The cotton comes in so many more fabric print options then PUL fabric does. But beside the style options. You will want the PUL fabric on inside because of poo. Your baby poo clean ups will be way more messy to clean up. When changing poo there is a greater chance of baby getting poo streaks on the fabric when changing. Having the PUL fabric on the inside allows you wipe the changing pad down before putting a new diaper and clothes on baby. I speak from experience. If you have an absorbent fabric on the inside the first time baby poos and you miss a spot it will just stay their. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Congratulations on the baby.

I did mine without using it but I put iron on interfacing on one’d side then the other I put iron on fusible fleece for more padding . It be a great idea if you had the lenght and width written down in the comments somewhere .im slow down I had to go back and forth .. but thank you .. I’ve been sewing for 40 years + . You did just perfect !!

    I purchased my PUL fabric from Joann Fabric and its in a different section then fabric or notions. Not a popular fabric so I'm sure you'll have to keep an eye out. You can wash on delicate and use the air dry function on the dryer or hang dry. Since it is a material that will melt with heat I would just avoid heat. Thank you for the tip. It is a great idea to add the measurements to the description. I will add that to the description soon. lovely changing mat. Have you thought of putting in batting to make it more comfortable to lay on?

  • @OlgaLing

    @OlgaLing

    4 жыл бұрын

    First thank you. And I appreciate you watching and commenting. Yes, I did put batting on the one I made my daughter when she was a baby. However, after experience I wouldn't do it again. In theory it sounds great, hence why I did it the first time, but it makes it so bulky and takes up so much room in the diaper bag, and there will be a ton of things mom will be carrying already. I was thinking more along *I just need to protect this couch at my friends house from getting poop on it* and *I dont want my baby touching this public changing table* quick thin grab and go but can hold the absolute minimum To get the job done. To get enough cushion for the baby to really feel it and be worth the money for batting isnt worth the extra room in the diaper bag or the bulk of always carrying it around. So glad you asked, hope this helps clarify my reasoning and answer anyone elses question.

    This is a great pattern; simple and functional. Would vinyl be a suitable substitute for PUL, or would that be too heavy? (I've found some fantastic vinyl I'd like to try; but @ $25 per yard, I'd rather not just "experiment")

  • @OlgaLing

    @OlgaLing

    Did you end up trying thr Vinyl? There are so many options I would lean toward too heavy but that may not always be true. The very 1st one I made of these years ago I used a clear vinyl and it was very bulky. But I still used it for my first baby. The PUL fabric is softer and thinner option is all.

    Well, sorta, only because we are talking about an infant laying on this. On this tutorial the shell linear fabric, called PUL, that is used to make cloth diaper shells. Honestly this is a preferred choice, however, the selection isn't great, but it is soft and easy to wipe. The first grab-n-go I made for my daughter I used a clear vinyl, although it was easy to wipe it was much stiffer which made it bulkier than the flexibility of the PUL fabric. Thanks for watching.

    Instead of diapers you would carry soap, shampoo, conditioner and have a place to sit to change. (You never know how clean the benches are). When you are done you have a place to wrap up your soiled clothes and wet towel to carry back to camp. I sometimes ride a bike if the showers are a bit far so that is why I was asking about attaching a handle or strap. I plan to use floral material and fusible fleece for a lining and some cushion. Also iron on plastic for easy clean up. Your pattern is perfect for my needs!

    That's great. Off the top of my head I say attaching the strap coming out from the left and right side of the pocket. To make it adjustable. Make a small tab with a D ring out of one side. Strap worth adjuster coming out the other. Sew it into each side just like the strap was sewn. Hope this helps.

    What is the plastic that you used to iron into the change mat?

    Outer layer is cotton. I ironed on fusible lightweight interfacing onto the inside of the cotton. The plastic fabric that is the inside of the changing pad is PUL fabric. Hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching. God Bless Stay safe.

    Where did you get the fabric both cotton and fabric?

    Hi Anna I got the cotton and PUL fabric from JoAnns Fabric and Craft store. But most of the fabric stores near me stopped carrying PUL fabric. May not have had much demand. I know you can find it on Etsy. However, at a higher price but supporting a small business. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    It's a PUL fabric. A laminated fabric that is safe for babies. I can no longer find the fabric at the fabric stores locally but you can find it online.

    I would reverse the pocket the other way, I would not want my baby or grandbaby laying on the plastic. Rather have the plastic laying on the changing table and the baby on the fabric ,so you can clean the plastic after you are done.

    Thanks for watching and commenting. Im curious, I like to understand people's thought processes and concerns as a general rule in life, what are your objections to laying on plastic? Thanks.

    @@OlgaLing I was thinking the same thing, and only putting the pul fabric half way down where the baby will be changed, and the rest would be the cotton fabric up towards the head. This makes sense to me as I agree with April and think it would be better this way...this is my own opinion...

    can you add some padding?

  • @OlgaLing

    I appreciate you watching and commenting.

    @@OlgaLing do you recommend adding some sort of batting to this, most changing stations are very hard. What would you recommend?

  • @OlgaLing

    @OlgaLing

    No, I do not recommend batting. Speaking from experience, the amount of batting you will need to add to make a difference isn't worth the amount of space; taking up half your diaper bag for a few minutes to change baby. Carrying around this bulky item all day for those few minutes it may make you stop using it. It'll be like having another blanket in the diaper bag. But if you are interested in still using batting I would use any type of batting really it will never touch baby. Try to puck one that'll wash well. There are organic options like cotton or silk and there are tougher man made options like thermal batting used for microwave projects. Hope this helps thanks for watching and commenting. God Bless.

    @@OlgaLing thank you, I have to experiment with this. What if you don put the batting all the way down to the bag part? Just only on the pad part. After watching your tutorial over and over. I see your point in use for this project. This would be for like when changing the baby on someone's sofa, or somewhere you don't want to mess up. I had the vision of for when you change the baby on the changing tables in a public restrooms. Those things are hard and cold. What do you recommend there?

  • @OlgaLing

    Oh no I used mine for public restrooms, amusement parks, in-store benches (yes that was me but i never left the diaper behind 😉), on the floor at parks, in tiny airplane bathrooms, the list goes on and on. So for my personal experience I would not bother with batting. But I also am the mom that when asked if i would like a wipes warmer for baby by multiple people because I live in a somewhat cold climate I am the mom that said "No Thank dont bother. I dont want baby to get used to it and then freak out when i cant give baby a warm wipe when we are on the go." 😆 My baby is now 5 and one of those happy tough princess types. So that's my parenting style so my recommendations may be a little of for others and that's imperfectly perfect. So if you want to put cushion I say "Yes go for it!" Im so happy you even want to use my pattern and watched my tutorial. 😃 I would agree take the bulk out of areas you dont need it like the pocket. Warm and Natural baby quilt batting should be easy to find no matter where you are located. Hope this helps.
