This video shows changing out a clasp - jewelry repairs. It shows a barrel clasp being removed and a new lobster claw clasp being installed. It goes through the removal process, the creation of new jump rings, the assembly, soldering, polishing, and cleaning.

What’s the price for changing out a clasp? Is the lobster clasp same purity as the rope chain?

Hi DANKG805 - Pricing is going to vary widely based on size of the clasp as well as the metal type. Most jewelers will probably start at $35 for a smaller silver clasp, but it can go well over $150 for solid gold lobster clasps. We typically go by customer request as to if the metal type is matched or not.

Why would anyone in their right mind change from a highly secure form of clasp with historical significance to a cheaply made modern lobster clasp? I swear people don't know what to do with excess money sometimes.

Thanks for your comment! In this case, the clasp was pretty well worn / broken, so they were just looking to have it wearable again.
Hey so i have a hollow 8mm chino link chain w a lobster clasp, is it possible to make it a box clasp with that? Esp if its hollow

Yes - it can be done. You would have to cut one of the chain links in half. One half gets attached to one side of the box clasp, the other side gets attached to the other side of the box clasp. Depending on your skill and the amount of metal, you can solder or laser it.
Why would they want a lobster over a barrel? That's blasphemy lol
