Today, we're going to address a relevant question about exudative macular degeneration and the possibility of changing medication for those undergoing this treatment.
To better understand, macular degeneration is a condition that affects the macula, the central region of the retina, especially in older people. It's important to note that the older you get, the more likely you are to be affected by this condition. It can come in two forms: dry, which is more common and progressive, and exudative, which is more aggressive and can lead to rapid vision loss.
Symptoms of the exudative form include spots in central vision, difficulty reading, recognizing faces and metamorphopsia, which is the distortion of straight lines. It is essential to understand that this form of macular degeneration can be quite serious, and a few years ago we had no effective treatments, which resulted in significant loss of vision.
Fortunately, today we have intravitreal injections of anti-angiogenic drugs, such as Eylia and Lucentis, which have proved to be very effective in controlling the disease. However, it is important to note that not all patients respond in the same way to treatment.
Some may show significant improvement, while others may not respond so well, stalling or even having the disease progress. In these cases, changing medication may be considered.
The decision to change medication usually depends on medical assessment, including tests such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) to assess the thickness of the macula and the presence of retinal fluid. If after a period of adequate treatment there is no satisfactory reduction in the activity of the disease, changing medication may be an option to be discussed with the doctor.
It is important to emphasize that each case is unique and must be assessed individually. In addition, it is essential to maintain open communication with the ophthalmologist to discuss the best treatment options.
Therefore, if you are undergoing treatment for exudative macular degeneration and are not getting the results you want, don't hesitate to talk to your doctor about the possibility of changing your medication. Always remember to follow your doctor's advice and carry out the necessary follow-ups to take care of your eye health.
