Changing jobs: How I became a software engineer

Hello! In this video, I talk about why I left the health field and how I got into coding. If you guys are currently at a fork in the road or trying to find a job in a completely new field - do not feel discouraged! I went through it and it was not easy but it was 100% worth it.
I forgot to mention that I learned the LAMP, MEAN and Ruby on Rail stacks at the coding bootcamp.
If you guys have any questions or concerns - comment down below and I will try to help as best as I can! Don't forget to subscribe! I upload once a week.

Make sure she learns to prioritize her health. Sitting and staring at a screen for hours and hours day after day is not good for you - and is unfortunately what a lot of people in this field do. But it doesn't have to be like that! There are videos on here about coding and health and avoiding burnout. And maybe when she is older and it's age - appropriate - talk to her about boys/men/professors/employers/coworkers and develop strategies to handle situations where she may be discriminated against for being female. This is something I was not prepared for and I wish I had been warned and prepped beforehand.

Wanted to give you a big thank you for your sincerely. I'm in a tough boat because I'm a father of two, work full time and worked hard to get my Series 7 and 66 licenses to work in finance because we needed money. I had left my computer science course I was going for which I absolutely loved. Almost two years later and I am in Finance and absolutely dread and hate every single minute of it and feel like I'm between a rock and a hard place because we need the money. But I realize the longer I stay the more I'm digging myself in. So I've made a decision to leave sometime this year, work part time in the evenings and code during the day for hours and figure out how to break in. I know it's not the same, but appreciate hearing your story.

In our Asian culture, the career path for us as if it has already been predetermined 99% of the time; switching career later seems very, very hard because there is that culture thing, fear of being criticized and worrying about what other people will say, until one day we realized, we're no longer happy with the career path we've chosen and we want to make a change. @libbylandes6868

    4 жыл бұрын

@@m1sschocolateface The biggest pro for me is being able to get to know a population that I wouldn't otherwise get to. That part is very rewarding. The scheduling of working 3 days a week can be seriously exhausting, but also nice that I have 4 days off in a week to do other things rather than 3. Another pro is the ability to work literally anywhere, and if you're good, you can get jobs in tons of different specialties, which is super fun. With that being said, on the 3 days you work, that is all you do, and it's very tiring. Nursing is a physical career where you walk thousands of steps each day. It's easy to get burnt out in today's healthcare system. Nurses, in general, are stressed out while working. It's quite a bit of pressure to keep all your patients happy and healthy, and more times than not you are putting the patients health/happiness over your own. I'm hoping to exit the hospital system to find a better work/life balance. You work weekends and holidays and you are scheduled 3 months in advance so it is hard to be spontaneous with your plans. Just for a background on myself. I'm 26, love travelling and hanging with friends, and I am very health conscious. I also have only worked in the hospital setting as a medical-surgical nurse and now a mother baby nurse. Feel free to message me with any questions at all.

It's so inspirational seeing someone from my own field switch track and do something they really want to rather than stuck in a loop of unhappiness. I'm currently there myself, trying to decide between clinical research/ Grad school or a career change. It's scary and somedays I don't want to do it anymore but It's v important for everybody to really understand what interests them and the earlier the better. Thanks for the video. I was a high school science teacher for 7 years and tried to help students find a path to continue their studies. I myself have a degree in chemistry, but I realize not all students enjoy science. Two things I recommended to all my students: try to learn all the math you can, and take some computer classes regardless of your major. It's nice to hear a story like yours since so many high school student feel so lost searching for a career path.

Hi Jessica! Thank you so much for sharing your story! I actually went through something very similar to you. I went to UCI as well as a Bio major and ended up switching to Public Health Sciences. I graduated in 2013 and I have been working at a doctor's office. I feel like I don't have the education to pursue something higher, but at the same time I'm not sure I want to stay in the medical field. I am also thinking of computer science but I am not sure which field to go into software engineer, data science, cyber security, etc. How did you decide which one to go into?

I knew I always had an interest in coding but I actually never dived heavily into it beforehand. I kinda just went for the boot camp. I honestly never thought about going into anything else besides that so its really what you think you’ll have more interest in. You can always switch later as well! You can also always take some free online courses to see which direction you would like to go in as well!
