I listened to this again and die Seth did a good job to the final when he talked about tuning just four lugs due to the fact the drums was below fundamental. The gentlemen asking the questions had excellent questions and wish there was more time available more even more thorough answers for educations or students interested learning this art. This is an ART and skill together to do this. This takes years to get the knack for clearing drums consistently. Seth would admit and I am sure was under the gun for time but there is soooooo much more to discuss on final clearing techniques that were not covered here.Caution the gauge he used to equalize the torque DOES NOT guarantee the terminal pitches will be all the same. New students be aware of this . Yes it will -I guess provide some semblance of equal torque- but many factors go into getting all the terminals with the same pitch. I am sure if these two gentlemen had more time they could explain in more detail some of these issues. But in all due respect this is only the START of the conversation for learning the ART of clearing the head. But thanks to you both Keep this mind to for the high achiever and one who wants to want a very musical sounding timpano is this -Unfortunately the timpano has but its very nature and can not theoretically be fixed is the overtone series for a timpano can never be totally in tune -It is called inharmonicity . That is another discussion that serious students need to study but I know would need to have another session.

There seems to be a missing portion of the clinic, that I would like to see more of and that is the purpose of the tensioning knob at the base of the tiffany, how is it used, why is it used, where should it be set prior to putting a new head on, does anything need to be done with it during Performances? My guess would be it is used to get a higher note if needed for a particular literature., , such as the works of Julie😊

Seth provided a basic explanation of from removing to remounting to maint. head. Most of it I agree until he got to the point of fine tuning. Of course everyone gets to the a point differently but there are many minute points he did not make at the stage of clearing the pitch. This is not totally fair to critique his explanation but I never have heard only tuning 4 of the 6 lugs to reach the fundamental.?? What if he would have reached the fundamental after tuning the 4 lugs? It would be a fair assumption the tension would not be the same would it? Now the drum dial step in that case could of equaled that out?? Also many would suggest to let the drum sit for a couple of days at least before coming back for any fine tuning. Pretty thorough though. The gentlemen observing Seth was asking excellent clarifying questions seeking more certainty on the processes. There are not a lot of working professional timpanist that have taken the time on youtube to demonstrate each step in detail. It is a real shame timpanist have not taken the time to document this thoroughly and explaining all the nuances in this process. There are many more decisions and questions also once you begin the fine fine tuning of the drum not covered here. The process for the clearing of timpani is best provided by the great Cloyd Duff. Look up on line for CLoyd the true professional who actually played and was the best in tone and intonation on the instrument

Absolute insanity here. Why do I say this? No one, and I mean absolutely no one talks about where do you put the tension knob with the toe all the way up and the block. WHAT IS THE STARTING POINT OF THE TENSION KNOB WITH THE HEAD ALL THE WAY OFF AND A BLACK PLACED UNDER THE PEDAL YOE???? PLEASE ANSWER WITH ACCURACY AND FIRMNESS.
