Changing A Kitchen "Split" Outlet

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I'm changing the kitchen "split" outlets from the old painted traditional outlets to the new flat Decora style outlets. Easy upgrade.

Quick story, I changed all the counter outlet in my first house more than 15 years ago, but I dint brake the tab to separate the top and bottom circuit and what a surprise when I went to flick the breaker back on.....BANG! just like a shotgun. Got it figured out after I removed the plug out. At first I taught it was a bad plug...LOL As usual great video buddy!

How i can install two outlets on the counter.Do i have to take connection from one of the out let or need to install another braker and wire from the box.

You can wire from one box to the next. Normally kitchens have a split outlet and one breaker per outlet. It’s best practice to wire the outlet from the panel but if you don’t have another option you can feed off the last box.

Question, how would you switch a 15a split receptacle to a GFI

You could use either the red or the black wire for power and terminate the other with a marette. Use the white neutral and ground wire as normal.

Do you wire kitchen splits to opposite phases or the same phase? I believe in Europe, they wire them to opposite phases. I don't believe the NEC requires them? Thumbs up for not putting tape around the outlet, which royally annoys me when I see it.

Yes they are in different phases but that is set up at the electrical panel. Electrical tape around the contacts? I don't know if that's even allowed by code here???

@@robsgaragewoodworkin yeah, the electrical tape around the device annoys the daylights out of me. I can't even imagine it from the manufacturer's view.

Does it matter if the red or black wire goes on top?

No. Just that they are both on the same side and the jumper tab is snapped off. Hot wires are on the darker copper coloured screws and neutral (white) goes to the lighter silver screws. The tab on the neutral side is not broken and thus only needs one wire.

Yeah its hard to show because of the kitchen layout and the fact that the wires are short an my farmers hands certainly get in the way. Thanks for your comment! Cheers! Rob

How can I add another outlet on the counter. Do I have to take connection from the first one or do I have to take another wire and braker from the box ?
