I wish more people could see this video, people just don't understand how mental health can effect you energy levels. And understand why it is a disability because sometimes it really disable you, and people label you as lazy

It is very difficult for people to understand how deep depression for example affects your whole life. It is easy to make judgements beacause it is hard to imagine or understand what a depressed person is going through. I was deeply depressed and it took a long time before I could say that it's ok, how could they understand this? Some said negative things to me, others said nothing, complete silence or talked behind my back. Friends "disappeared". Today, I know I didn't do anything wrong. I developed this illness and there were reasons for it. Today, I am happy, healthy and living my life as anyone else! My experiences are valuable, I will not judge people because I have not walked in their shoes!

I think I'd rather be labeled lazy than mentally disabled. 😉

Great video!!! (As always.) Several years ago I was having some health issues that led me to trying a particular elimination diet. After just a few weeks I was blown away by how much energy I suddenly had…which made me realise that all of my life I had believed that I was a lazy person. It was so freeing to let that idea go, and to stop blaming myself.

Thank you for this!❤ I have several chronic invisible illnesses that I believe started a decade at least b4 being diagnosed. I don’t work anymore but I definitely felt the bias when I was working. “Comparison is the thief of joy,” but when you are struggling with an illness you often compare yourself to others or your “previous healthy” self to gauge if you can keep up with the workload or not. It often leads to burnout and mental health issues in addition to more physical problems brought on by health. It doesn’t help that here in the US we also have a very broken medical system. So thank you again for bringing these stigmas out in the open again, challenging us to not allow shame, guilt, etc burden ourselves even more. I’m passionate about this as well ❤

Totally agree about comparing myself to a past self! Such a good point. Thanks for the insightful comment!

Hi Elin, I have had to learn these lessons also. I now write a list of the top 3 work goals for my day. I also write my top 3 goals for my house work. It is great to tick these off as I achieve. I had problems at work as I was used as a football for everything. I am a worker & a lot was thrown my way. I now just do what I can & the rest can take care of itself. I have drawn back and deflect as need be. Self care is too important. I have had to learn these things. If I take care of myself I am better able to help others. x

I think this is why I was drawn to your content to start with, you are so approachable. I have a chronic disability that limits what I can do and I struggled for years after I got "too sick" to feel like I wasn't a disappointment to everyone. I had always been the bread winner and house keeper and I couldn't anymore. Now I do what I can and ask for help when I can't and I got into decluttering as a way of being able to better manage my space. I really appreciate your encouragement and gentle approach.

I used to have that negative self-talk and call myself lazy until I learned about Executive Functioning and that my brain lacked certain skills, namely Task Initiation and Time Management. As you outlined, perfectionism plays a role in starting a task because of the all or nothing mentality so procrastination would occur. I don't like using a timer so the main strategies I use to accomplish things are allowing myself to break down jobs into bite-sized chunks (for example, I never clean the whole bathroom at once anymore) and habit stacking, like doing dishes immediately after eating. In more recent years, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid disease, which has slowed my metabolism and therefore caused weight gain and lower energy. Any chronic illness/fatigue/pain can be quite physically and mentally depressing. If you get allergies or a virus on top of that, forget it! Rest is the most productive thing you can do during those times. Like you said, laziness doesn't exist, especially if you really wish you could do the thing but just can't get over that hurdle for whatever reason(s).

Excellent video, Elin! One thing I want to add on labelling disabilities / illness as laziness: It does not have to be as dramatic as an illness, it might just be your monthly cycle. My energy levels differ WASTLY depending on what 'time of the month' it is for me. Don't beat yourself up over it, instead use the extra energy you have before ovulation and make sure you get some extra rest and sleep before and during your period. For me, it helps to have a partner who doesn't go through a monthly cycle and whose energy levels are more constant. He can take on tasks when I am not feeling well and I take on more when my energy levels allow it.

Great tips and advice! My mother's advice years ago is still true today. The habit you create can be good or bad. It takes the same amount of time, but the results differ so much. And to replace the bad even takes longer I'd you continue to do it over and over again.

Thank you so much f this video. I have permanent/chronic pain and mental issues. I take a lot of medication for both. I detest always having to justify what and when I can and can't do things. It literally spreads the pain to my heart and soul xxxxxxxxxxx

Thank you for this topic! I absolutely needed this RIGHT NOW! I am currently a nursing student close to graduation, I am a mother, and I work. I am also overweight and have struggled with this my whole life and have just started yet another journey towards weight loss. I am exhausted all of the time, mentally, physically, emotionally and have been telling myself I am just a fat lazy person. I am struggling sooo bad to hang on in these last few months of nursing school. 😢 I know it will get better but I never allow for rest right now nor can I even find the time. My house is a wreck and Im very minimal with all of my belongings and a very organized person yet somehow its a tornado walking in every single day and I can’t do anything because the moment I start cleaning I feel overwhelmed that now I lost time and feel overwhelmed by homework and I just feel like a terrible mother all at the same time since I barely have time and have to be gone everyday shes in daycare being raised bu someone else. Anyways im so sorry i didn’t expect to end up ranting I just came to say thank you🙏

Don't worry about your home right now. My mum will retire in a few months and right now she is caring for her uncle and my grandmother who got injured recently while she works a highly stressful job. She told me on the phone that her home is a mess right now and I said to her: Let it be messy. You will have time to clean and tidy in a few months. When I have a stressful time, I neglect cleaning and focus on dishes and laundry. Nobody cares much if the bathroom hasn't been cleaned in three weeks, but what actually is important is that there are clean clothes to put on in the morning and clean dishes you can eat from. Because dishes and clothes you need every single day! I am sending you strenght, girl. I was raised by a single working mother and it showed me, her daughter, how strong we actually are.

That whole link between perfectionism and then procrastination and then that being viewed as laziness 🤯 This was so my dad my whole life that I knew him and I noticed I totally did this same pattern myself. Mix that in with the depression he struggled with ( I as well in my late teenage years) was so debilitating. It took years for me to recognize and correct this damaged way of thinking. Unfortunately my dad never did cause I don’t think he could recognize what he was going through or why and back then therapy or counseling was not a regular or accepted thing.
