My favorite way to do this is to pause before you pull through on the stitch and pull the new color through. That way you don't need to leave a live loop open or re-insert your hook

When I change colors its usually before I start a new row, so i do the yarn over, hook the two loops, pull the working yarn through the first two loops, then the new color through the last 2 on the top of the double crochet, then the chain 3 and the new color is the next row. Cutting a tail for the last color and then tying/weaving it through the row it matches

Yes, there are many ways to change colors. And the method you describe is what I show in many of my videos. However, the method shown in this video is sometimes better for when there are lots of colors changes that occur frequently like in graphghans. Sometimes it's easier to think of "completely finishing" a stitch first, to match the chart's block, then backing out for the next color change.

Why not just pull the new color through that last stitch? You're making an extra step that's not necessary, plus taking the hook out and putting it back in. Why go through all that trouble?

When working with many different colors, or, with yarn colors constantly changing, or following a complicated chart, sometimes it's easier to think of finishing the one color completely, then backing out for the next color.
