According to Jacques Polge, the ‘Noir’ side of Coco Noir was apparently inspired by the time Coco Chanel spent in Venice in 1919. She fell in love with the city, which she visited after the sudden death of her lover, Boy Capel, to try and quell her grief & pain after the loss. 😢

I too had problems with the longevity so I purchased the body lotion to add some staying power. That worked out pretty well.

I have the lotion only. For some reason it makes me feel I have more control over it. Some days I like it, some days it's... meh. But I do like patchouli if done right. Great review, Thomas!

Hi Thomas! I have been craving for this frag for some time. I guess because of the stunning bottle ( I collect them) and I have a soft spot for Chanel. But though quite nice a scent it is a bit disappointing and too expensive for what it offers. I think I will stick to my regular Chance edt. Great review, as usual. Before ur video popped up, (funny how that works), I was sorting my bottles away and I picked Nior up and gave it a whiff and right away I thought this feels like a mature-grown up version of Coco Mademoiselle! It really does ! It’s quite lovely though I enjoy this one. (Glad ur video popped up) 😀

I do enjoy this perfume...it's an easy reach type of scent but well done.

It's a nice perfume. Love that black bottle. I find the grapefruit note to be a standout. Patchouli is at a warm cashmere blanket level for me.

I have a 50ml bottle from 2014. The drawer were it lives smells like Coco Noir, in spite of sharing it with some other 30 perfumes, one of which is none other than Womanity. This can attest to the intensity of the first batches. I love it and it's almost finished, I dread the day when I have to re-buy it and find myself with a weak shadow of its former self. Oh well, I don't want to be without it.

Aside from Ungaro by Emmanuel Ungaro and along with Private Collection - discontinued. So, Clinique Aromatic Elixir and Coco Chanel were my winter scents. After the reformulation some decade ago, the longevity on most fragrances is short and I just cannot see myself spending that much if I have to keep re-applying. Lately, I find myself getting the smaller size even testers to try different fragrances to replace it. Found Twilly by Hermes this seems to last a little longer than most. I enjoy so much listening to you describe scents :)

Love this fragrance. Something about it just makes me so happy. I do wish it would last longer to my nose, although people compliment me even after I can't smell it. If anyone is aware of a dupe that lasts longer, please share.

Love your review! Succinct, on point and as usual - with great humor! It is a lovely perfume but is not deserving of the “noir” addition. Longevity-wise, unfortunately you are right. The parfum version is better in this respect though.

I'm fairly new to fragrance "collecting" (in the past I used fragrance, but only 1 or 2 scents here and there). I bought this around xmas time--and price per pop--I was incredibly disappointed. ESPECIALLY when I can buy almost ANY Zoologist fragrance and get a fragrance that is 10x better than this. I like it, and I wear it, but it's probably my only--and my last--Chanel fragrance. Thanks for the review!

It’s the smooth patchouli feeling and slight Chanel glamour. Coco is NOT a patchouli thing at all different league and more legendary (old formula at least)

I also do not recognise a "noir" factor in this perfume. It is nice enough, and the bottle is beautiful, but I do not find this a compelling fragrance at all especially for the price poin. It does not have the "wow" factor that original Coco has in spades, and unless I was told that it was a Chanel, I would not have guessed it all on my own. I agree the opening is beautiful and very promising, but as you said, it does not deliver on its promise, at least not for me. I only tested it once or twice a few years ago, probably before this current formulation, so I cannot really speak to its performance, but generally speaking, apart from the lovely citrus opening, I find it a bit pedestrian much like some of Chanel's other fragrances such as Chance and its many flankers. Terribly disappointing fragrance on the whole, but love that bottle!

Very good and detailed review! I’ve been holding out buying this due to the lack of longevity- I’ve been tempted many times due to the sleek bottle but it’s something about paying that price for a perfume that has the lasting power of a body spray.. I’ve noticed a similarity between Chanel Allure Sensuelle and Coco Noir- have you noticed this ,too?

I have! Chanel perfumes are victim to re formulation which is expected, what I don’t appreciate is huge price hikes! Massive!

Great video! I love Coco Mademoiselle and any other spicy & sweet adjacent fragrances because they always boost my confidence. How does it compare to the Extrait? It's so difficult to find in store to try so we would love to hear your thoughts on it! 😄

I bought it mine long ago when I checked the batch code last year was made in 2013, I heard that was reformulated, I don’t know I didn’t try again. My last a lot.

This is the only Chanel in my collection where I’ve regretted blind buying a 100ml bottle! 😂 All the hype over it on its release made me do it, lol. I had so hoped for more ‘Noir’ and less Mademoiselle. The bottle itself is gorgeous though, best part of it, tbh. And yes, the longevity sucks!! 👎

I totally agree with you about the name..it’s very misleading and has nothing to do with original coco which in my opinion should’ve come in a black bottle instead . I don’t like the original Mademoiselle, it’s not that I hate it it’s just doesn’t appeal to me at all. Intense one it’s a totally different story, it’s fabulous. Now Coco Noir has some resemblance to one of Les Eaux fragrances, Paris-Venise, not dupe but quite similar( which I think it’s far prettier) Maybe because like someone else already mentioned, Coco Noir is connected to Coco’s dark period spent in Venice after Boy’s sudden death. Longevity isn’t great at all, very disappointing, many of Chanel’s EDT last longer than this one. Overall I do like it but it’s just a like not a love. The bottle is perfection though.

Can you tell for how long the fragrance stays when applied on fabric.. is it more than 5-6 hrs ?? 😊

I find the scent amazing, mysterious much more likable than cologne-y COCO and more unique than Mademoiselle. Sad to hear it is not long lasting considering the price...

Oh my gosh yes! I only own one and it blows my mind compared to its EDP or EDT. Completely different experience. I’ve been on the fence about blind buying the parfum versions of Coco Noir or Coromandel. Oh, oops, as I’m typing this I realize I may have misunderstood. Maybe there are extraits that are different from their “parfum” concentrations 😅

If you can find a vintage Coco parfum, get it! It’s the most sumptuous, rich, deep & incredibly long-lasting Chanel extrait that I’ve ever tried. I have the 80’s version. It’s a masterpiece. ♥️

My Noir is about five years old, and the lasting power is good! Sad if that is a reformulation thing. 👎🏼 I totally agree with the “noir” thing… nothing noir about it! I do enjoy it for its elegance. I wear it day time when I want to feel crisp, elegant and somewhat distant and cold. 😌 Typical Chanel dna, nothing groundbreaking, but then again that’s just what I need sometimes.

I loved it the first time it was launched, but then I bought a second bottle and was disappointed as the fragrance changed. It became fruitier in some way unacceptable by me.

Its smells like coco mademoiselle, N5 and JLO perfume together. Its very close to mademoiselle and smells clean with hint of the smell of grandmother jewelry box. You can smell the jasmine, rose, amber. Its NOT sweet, not citrusy, not fruity. Its more of spicy (spice, clean, flower, amber, some grandma jewelry box (old lady)). Its doesn't last long, it disappears in 30 minutes. I personally prefer coco mademoiselle more.

Catching up on videos and hearing about the longevity on this makes me mad. Especially since Chanel keeps raising their prices.

It doesn't last on me.

Sad. I love my Coco Noir, but do agree the longevity is lacking.

Right On!! It's a 3. So Tried of Everything commercial. Safe and boring. NOW they added Weak. (Especially Chanel. I impulse bought a bottle of original coco off their website. I Know it 1000% This thing they sent me....if it was say, a 9, power wise. They killed it to a 1.5. A touch higher then EDT now. (And no idea what that is now. Splash? Fragrance water? ) Tired of being ripped off. AND they should be forced to change the name if they change the formula. Booo

All Chanel smells too masculine for me. Although that bottle impresses me. I wish I liked it.

I can wrap my head around more “challenging” fragrances. But I can’t get on with this one…its just perfumey and flat to me. Chanel is too austere for me in general. And I much prefer Italian houses for that reason

Flat is a good way to describe this one! It’s “almost” cool! But then… argh disappointing. I like how it smells and it still has a tiny bit of Chanel “magic” but it could have been WAY better! To take coco and turn it noir? Such a good idea. :( failed

Please beware: you're quite literally putting your credibility on the line here. *Longevity is amazing* That is not my opinion - it's a fact. And the bottle suits the smell perfectly imho. I have an older, but also a brand new bottle - fantastic longevity and sillage alike. Another Sheldrake's masterpiece. Not safe or boring ... by any stretch of imagination...
