We have a saying in Oz "You can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell him much" A bit of an hyperbole really because I have watched Chandwell grow from its early days, and Michael has done a fantastic job with creating a town with a history, one that I can really believe in. And he listens, and acts on suggestions from his viewers. Thank you my man.

That is brilliant! A replica of Gods own County. A good example of a dangerous bridge on a long disused line is Castleford Viaduct. You could walk over it in the nineties. It was still in use back then even though you could see through the deck plates. Its collapsing now.

Every week I drive up Wharf Street in Sowerby Bridge and can't help thinking about Chandwell when I see the clock tower (which is stuck at 11:11 [don't know if that's deliberate]). I really agree that the characters and background you have created help to add purpose and fun to the layout in addition to helping you to remain focused when making decisions, as you eluded to in the video. Keep up the great work, Michael - I'm looking forward to seeing the current set of buildings reaching completion. Cheers. Simon.

Your layout reminds me exactly of towns in the north from 1980s & 1990s when I travelled the area for work. Funnily enough I've fond memories, despite the grime and rundown nature, mainly because of the architecture and the people. I'm a southerner and I've always warmed to northerners, much more friendly on the whole, I've also lots of friends in Brum, my second home in many ways. Congrats on the BBC airing too - that helps the hobby no end and leads others to therapeutic endeavours too. We were lucky enough to have my dad's small garden line as part of a BBC series. The layout has a life of its own and has inspired youngsters to go to uni to study engineering or get involved in heritage railways, and to model their own lines. We've also been privileged to raise funds for charity using it. We didn't know that the layout would become its own entity, a real railway in miniature and a force for good. Model railways are a multifaceted force for good💜✌️👍😊

Well what a great Update and News Michael. Welcome to those who have joined since the wonderful BBC article. As a Subscriber & Member I really enjoy Chandwell as a whole. I discovered Chandwell as Michael was starting the Mammoth and Spectacular Royal Scot Hotel build. Then his ideas and comments for what became Back Market St, with all its twists and turns. Chandwell is a Timemachine back to that era, in both place and railway and has only got better and more complex since then. Chandwell like many real places in Northern England in the early 1990’s were a little run down, rough around the edges, there were many grand plans of Urban regeneration, which in time amounted to very little. I have had the privilege to accompany Michael on a short inspiration walk around Brook St, Ilkley looking at both the grander front and more functional rear. I waiting patiently till he models the back walls of latest Station Rd Row. The back wall is a very Interesting prototype, if Michael can model it like the previous building rear walls, Back Market St, rear of High St on Water Lane, and the 1st part of Station Road. I know Michael is always interested in what can be seen in the real world. I think it’s sometimes that eye for the little details which really gives a sense of time and place. It’s also Michael slightly tongue in cheek approach to his work, and encouraging others into this world that adds to the overall brand. Thank you Michael for such a wonderful Channel and sharing your work. Ian

Hi Michael. I saw Chandwell in the model railway press a while back. I'm sure you're right that part of the attraction is the depth of the fiction. As a fiction author, I feel that background information (even if you don't use it all) adds a lot to the credibility of a story. "Backstory", as they call it. Sometimes even the implication that it's there is enough. Anyway, your buildings are superb, although I don't think I'll be emulating your efforts - N scale is a bit small for my 75-year-old eyes! OO is about as small as I care to get. I'll watch the BBC coverage now! Just noticed my KZread handle is still job-related. After 7 years of retirement maybe I should change it. Robert

I'm surprised there are so few subscribers to this outstanding channel. Perhaps with its focus more on buildings than on rolling stock and running trains narrows the audience. I'm interested in all of it, though I don't have my own layout or plan on building one. But the buildings created here are really works of art and I love the demeanor of our host who has a bit of humor he sprinkles on the whole affair. Well done!

Hello Michael, posted yesterday but I think YT bounced my comment as there was an external link - however that’s not a bad thing. It’s given time to see that you’ll be on Look North tomorrow (which, due to the wonders of modern things like iPlayer will be played in a house in East London!) and also I can see you’ve picked up 500 or so subscribers who all seem really pleased to have found the channel. Really pleased for you! You’ve done a great job on representing the hobby and the TV item is richly deserved, proper chuffed Michael 👍🏼

I think it would be good if Chandwell got rid of the horizontal lines in its sky, where the paper joins are. As an artist I do a fair few landscapes and streetscenes and noticed something odd. Based on talking to people, the human eye/brain seems to accept without question any vertical lines going into the sky, but jars on horizontal ones, don't ask me why. I get round this by painting any pylon/telephone lines (that are actually strung like piano wire in real life) into graceful curves ('sagging') and people really like it! Anyway...if you did all your sky joins vertically, it would greatly add to the realism of Chandwell.

Good tips! Quite a few people comment on my sub-standard backscene, but Chandwell is a project in "what can I do myself", and sadly buying a commercial print, or paying a printer to do my backscene felt like a betrayal of that ideal. There are some things that you have to buy, such as fencing and trackside signs etc. But I am happy with my lined sky. It's interesting what you say about horizontal lines though. I will be less "for the cause" with Chandwell version 2 and I will take a different approach to the backscene, I think.

I don't see how you can possibly take any pride in that. Letting the town hall turn into some seedy nightclub? My wife and I were married there! Sure it was a small affair, but and we were all a tiny but tight, and during our honeymoon I found out that apparently size does matter, but to let this sort of thing happen is pretty small of you (excellent work BTW! )

I bet there are councils holding meetings to discuss why none of their buildings have made it onto the Chandwell landscape and action groups being formed to rectify the omission.
