To any of you couch wonder bowlers, calling Marty Cassio a bad bowler, chew on this for a second, "Martin James Cassio was born August 15, 1904 in Palermo, Sicily and moved to the United States at the age of 5. The Cassios settled in Union County, NJ and Marty went to work in a Rahway tailor shop while in grade school to help his family make ends meet. While carrying a bundle of clothes, Marty slipped and fell through a plate-glass window. He cut his right arm badly and it never fully developed; his ring and pinky fingers were permanently curled. Bowling was one of the few sports open to a young man with this handicap. It didn’t hurt that some of the biggest names in the game were Italian-Americans. Marty took to the lanes in his mid-20s and soon became known as The Bowling Tailor. Because he could not generate great power on his release, he focused on accuracy. During the 1930s and 1940s, Marty anchored some of the NY Metro area’s top bowling teams-including Wagner & Adler and Bowling Journal-and he was a standout in American Bowling Congress tournaments, winning 15 in his career. He was arguably the country’s best bowler in the mid-1940s, and starred in AMF’s first bowling movie, entitled Ted Pin Magic. Marty continued to be one of the sport's leading lights through the 1950s, capturing the Eastern Open title in 1955. In 1958, he was the first player inducted into the Union County Bowling Hall of Fame. Marty passed away at the age of 68 in his hometown of Rahway-a few months after entering the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame. Too bad you were not bowling heads us against Marty in the 1940's!

I just found this video today. Was so nice seeing my Grampa Cassio alive! He passed away when I was a newborn. Wish there were more video's of him. :( At least of him winning! LOL!

I saw Lillard in the UK in I think 1965, doing a promotional tour for Brunswick. he put on a great show and impressed everybody with his pleasant manner and big curve. That was the old Regal Bowladrome in Grays, Essex, home of many fine bowlers. I think I am right in saying that Bill is still bowling and has the record for alltime high pinfall in ABC tourneys.

Chris Schnekel hosted this program! And I didn't think he did bowling on TV until ABC began doing the weekly PBA Winter/Spring tour telecasts in 1962! Maybe Roone Arledge knew Chris had done bowling in the fifties and thus, selected him to do ABC's "Pro Bowlers Tour" broadcasts, which he would do for something like 35 years.

These shows are really cool. I have been seeing guys that I had read about, but had never seen them in action before this, e.g., Jouglard, Cassio, King, Ed Kawolics, Faragalli, etc. Thanks for uploading!

These matches are historic on many levels. This one was, however, a mismatch. Mr. Cassio threw a dead ball even by the standards of the era, probably because of the accident to his hand. Lillard was a precursor to the power bowlers of the late seventies on forward. Thanks for posting

He was also close to the end of his bowling career here. He was 20 years Bill Lillard's senior.

This is when bowling was legitimate. The equipment today is the reason for such unrealistic averages. The game was better when you were rewarded with a strike because of proper release and speed. I watch these young kids throwing these high powered balls and all they do is run and throw as hard as they can.

I wonder if the match the following week with Don Carter still exists...would like to see that. Watching these shows in chronological order adds a pleasurable dimension to them, as you get to follow the winners from week to week. And I love to hear balls rolling down proper wood lanes like this...don't hear that much anymore.

Thank you posting this match. This is a real historical archive for bowling. You can hear Chris Schenkel's maturation as a bowling announcer; it was also something watching Lillard, who was, as Mr. Schenkel said, a cranker, a style which went out in the ensuing years, then resurfaced , for the long run, about 20 or so years later. Mr. Schenkel always brought the human dimension to this sport, in this case with interesting commentary on Marty Cassio's background, the sport itself , and the local geography.. Too bad he bowled so poorly, but it was nonetheless a great match to watch and hear.

Were these Old Timers Not Able to Wipe the Ball off between Throws? They only seemed to wipe their hands off countless times... which to me seems like they are wiping the oil off their hands... and not the ball itself? Seems like they would want to wipe the ball off and not just handle a greasy/oily ball!
